With The Season Finale Hours Away, Brian Sack And Head Writer Jack Helmuth Talk The B.S. Of A.

What’s it been like since Glenn headed to Texas? Was it everything you hoped it would be when you sang about it in December?

JACK: The supply of Snackwells never gets depleted anymore. There are no more dinners at Glenn’s apartment where Brian and I are painted a picture of the end of days while trying to enjoy a steak that costs more than I make in a year. And even though I thought it was a lie fabricated by his enemies, Glenn does like to set fires, so it’s nice not to be around that type of person in an office environment. A burning office environment.

BRIAN: A lot of people went to Texas with him. I miss Glenn’s bodyguards. They’re real men. They could have shared their secrets and taught me how to be buff and stoic. I miss my old producer Dominic and our director, Sarah. They all have cars and free parking and guns and giant houses now. It’s the opposite of New York City. It was also nice to have Glenn around the office because he was always game to do something with us. “Could you pretend to suck someone’s soul out?” “Sure, I guess.” He doesn’t have the slightest concern about being self-deprecating. That’s a great quality for someone to have when you want them to dress up as Emperor Palpatine.

JACK: Actually, it’s not as much fun around the offices now that Glenn is gone. He brings an incredible positive energy at all times that lifts your spirit and really inspires you to do your best. Comedy people can be, by nature, moody and pessimistic, so we miss Glenn for that. Yes, the guy whose pillow talk is how the Muslim Brotherhood will kill us all is a beacon of positivity.

BRIAN: He’s a beacon of positivity that short circuits every fifty seconds or so. But it’s true, the atmosphere at the office changed. When he was around we couldn’t have orgies. Had to wear shoes. Interns had to be treated humanely. Playing dice was not allowed. No drinking during meetings. Now it’s all better. Plus everyone who was left behind is pretty certain apes and humans share a common distant ancestor.

What does the future hold for you guys, B.S. of A., and GBTV?

BRIAN: Well, GBTV changed its name to TheBlaze (Editor note: Whoops! Duh.) for starters. I’m sure it’ll grow on me. In the meantime when people ask what network I work for I’ll probably say Spike or HGTV or something more masculine. Hercules Network. I work for the Hercules Network.

JACK: We all think TheBlaze is a really great name. (Massively long pause) After our season finale airs on June 28th we’ll have seven weeks off until our season premiere on August 23rd. We’ll take that time to shoot a bunch of sketches and to brainstorm ideas to make the show better as a whole. The goal is to ultimately do more than one show per week, so I’m always trying to come up with recurring bits that are both funny and easy to do. Shooting full sketches takes a lot of time and energy (writing it, rewriting it, casting it, securing locations, moving equipment, setting up lights, actually shooting it, and then editing it), especially with such a small crew, so the goal is to find ways to be consistently funny and efficient. I’m looking forward to the time off to brainstorm brand new segments for the show that meet these criteria. Then, on our season premiere, we’ll deal with the cliffhangers from our season finale and hit the ground running with as much political comedy as we can muster in the run-up to the election.

BRIAN: For the number of folks on the show, seven, we’re doing a ridiculous amount of work. Luckily Jack put together an excellent team of multi-taskers. Matt Fisher and Lauren Adams are excellent performers and writers. Our editor/animator/silent actor Rob is fantastic. Our PA Ben became an AP, which means nothing to you unless you went to film school, but it’s important. Our producer/shooter Mike is was just at the Oscars. He’s that good. And as showrunner, Jack is so devoted he’s emailing me stuff at 2am and named his new baby Brian Sack Helmuth. There’s talk of doing two nights a week. If that happens we’ll be hiring more people. Also, my wife will leave me because all my time will be devoted to The B.S. of A. with Brian Sack on the Hercules Network.

The season finale of The B.S. of A. with Brian Sack airs tonight on GBTV (soon to be TheBlaze) at 7pm. Watch a trailer for the episode below.
