American Confidence In Television News At A Record Low

A new Gallup poll reveals that American confidence in television news and newspapers has hit a record low: only a quarter of Americans say they have a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in either. According to Gallup these results continue a trend that began in 2002.

Gallup clarifies the results saying that “it is unclear how much respondents factored in the online and cable offshoots of “newspapers” and “television news” when assessing their confidence in these institutions.” But it’s hard not to note the 2002 dip and speculate that it coincides with a broader used of the Internet and a rise in blogs as a news source, which in turn has often allowed people to get the news they want to hear, as opposed to the news as determined by a handful of media organizations.

Alas, what the poll doesn’t clarify is what Americans do find to be a trustworthy news source. One wonders if any medium would get the nod from more than 25% of the population.

It’s getting tougher to tell the liars from the liars … So people just turn them all off.

The one thing good about the Internet is there is no longer the respected TV liar, like Walter Crankcase was. As Obama is now figuring out it makes propaganda easy to see through…

I believe journalism feels they need to create controversy by slanting the news one way or the other.

Case in point is the left leaning writes on this web site and recently the outing of JournoList, who seemed to think they had to get their stories straight before spewing their garbage.

All forms of journalism is paying the price. It does not seem to matter if it costs them viewers, subscribers, readers…they are going to do it their way…the “Stupid Public be Damned!”

It was Andy Rooney who said a journalist should tell the story the way it is , not the way they would like it to be . You know who we need now ? Tim Russert . I think that was someone who was right down the middle . I hope his son is just half the man his father was . … There are prizes out there to be won by honest , fair reporters who will root out corruption and tell the truth and leave their ideology out of it . We’ll all be better off when every crooked politician is hounded out of office .

With the right wing media attacking the “lamestream media” and the mainstream media attacking Fox News, what else could be expected?

What’s needed is an independent media watchdog to do fact-finding investigations to determine not who is the most trusted name in news, but who is the MOST trustWORTHY name in news.

Let me guess….you think Media Matters would fill this roll, right?

I have a really far out idea…how about journalism get their act together, try reporting the facts…just the facts ma’am, then let us “little people” decide for ourselves.

I realize some can’t decide anything without someone telling you who is most trustworthy, but …I hold no hope for them. Maybe there is a government grant they could use to look into this.

Uncle Walter was the father of advocacy journalism, and Russet perjured himself on the stand in the Libby trial.

Today’s media is viewed by many as the enemedia. The gross lack of journalistic ethics is killing them….a slow but worthy death. Someday the sick puppies will be gone and replaced by those who remember what the mission of “news” is. But for now, the level of confidence in the so-called media will continue to diminish.

Just look how Glynnis bastardized the Palin story…..this is what today’s journo’s do. They bastardize anything to help hehimself teh one…..screw truth and fact, as long as they protect their cult leader, they are just fine with spreading lies.

The american people are a heck of a lot smarter than those who claim the high ground of reportage.

Spoken like the for sure biased and partisan idiot you make yourself out to be on a daily basis. All so-called journalism leans left or right. What the hell are you talking about? You must work for Fox News, you too have no clue what the words “fair and balanced” mean! The world doesn’t operate of your archaic and benign political views, even though seem obsessed with this issue. We all now you are a right winger but being so doesn’t govern most peoples lives. The mess this country is in is due to the old military march cadence, left right left…your left… your left right left. It really doesn’t matter, the system is broke and broken. Perhaps you might consider a cease and desist in playing with your little bat and wake up and smell the political manure!?

The only reason that the % is as high as it is – here it comes- Fox news and similar outlets finally telling the truth about the lamestream media. If it wasn’t for them, the % would more like 5% or less.

Todays news entertainment is akin to professional wrestling. Lots of hype and fluff and very little substance. What news? If you referring to spin and lies, that can’t be called news. I call it neo-fictional reporting of our times as created in the minds of fools who should be politicians but realized there more money and less hassle in bending the truth. Anyone who wasted their time watching the current televised so-called news shows needs help, possibly a brain transplant. The prerequisite is there must already be a brain present, so sorry, most don’t qualify.

There is no longer a higher ground of reportage, it’s all lies, spin and innuendo. Journalists have become the scum of the world, just like politicians. Both “careers” are in the midst of falling approval ratings and there’s no secret why, they have pushed the envelope and surpassed the boundaries of acceptance. And you sir, may want to consider your partisan mindset and reconsider those you support and ask yourself what have they done for you lately. the bottom line answer will be a resounding nothing.

Which ideology practices censorship to advance there goals? Liberals or conservatives?

Maddow Blog see (8/13) censored my opposition to her remarks concerning private prisons. She tried to make the case that a private prison (CCA) was somehow conspiring with Jan Brewer to implement SB1070 to so that CCA would make more evil profit. I pointed out the fallacy of her arguments and also pointed out that several liberal democrats were on the board of directors for CCA not the least of which is Thurgood Marshall Jr, the son of the late civil rights activist and Supreme Court Justice. Retired Senator Dennis Deconcini is also on the board. My comments were deleted (censored). I was labeled a troll (which is trolling) and cursed out. The moderator (what a misnomer) claimed there was adequate disagreement on the blog. Go there now and read the thread, there isnt even enough substance to call it a discussion. That is the liberal media response to opposition. Censorship direct, or by ommission is wrong. If Fox does this please let me know.

WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. Little Jimmie Horn got himself “censored!”

    Wise up, buddy.

When the public sees the economy tanking, deficits running out of control, the military involvements dragging on without sign of resolution, etc. etc….and then turns on the news to get slobbering bootlicking of Obama and company, they can figure out what is going on. The mainstream media has stopped reporting the news and has entered the business of propaganda. And, of course, it shows in polls like this one, and in the ratings.

Well, except for one cable network that keeps on attracting more and more viewers…..

Look at the steep drop from late 2006 to 2008, and continuing to drop through today. The kid-gloves treatment Obama has been receiving since he entered the political arena with little introspection from media outlets has compromised their credibility significantly.

  • MichelleF

And here’s one of the reasons the public absolutely dispises the media:

    LET’S PLAY ‘SPOT THE DEMOCRAT’!

In the greatest party-affiliation cover-up since the media tried to portray Gary Condit as a Republican, the media are refusing to mention the party affiliation of the thieving government officials in Bell, Calif.

There have been hundreds of news stories about Bell city officials’ jaw-dropping salaries. In this poor city on the outskirts of Los Angeles, where the per capita annual income is $24,800 a year, the city manager, Robert Rizzo, had a salary of $787,637.

That’s about twice what the president of the United States makes. (To be fair, Rizzo was doing a better job.)

Rizzo was the highest-paid government employee in the entire country, not counting Maxine Waters’ husband — pending further revelations. With benefits, his total annual compensation, according to the Los Angeles Times, came to $1.5 million a year.

Alerted to the Bell situation, the White House quickly added the Bell city manager to the list of jobs saved by its stimulus plan.

Not only that, but Rizzo was entitled to 28 weeks off a year for vacation and sick leave. To put that in perspective, that’s almost as much vacation time as public school teachers get!

Reached in Spain, even Michelle Obama was outraged.

Rizzo responded to the anger over his preposterous salary by saying: “If that’s a number people choke on, maybe I’m in the wrong business. I could go into private business and make that money.”

(If he wants to grab one of those private-sector jobs that pays $1.5 million for 24 weeks of work, may I suggest the entertainment industry?)

Good luck to him. After leaving Bell, Rizzo will be lucky to land a job at Taco Bell. Before being anointed the King Tut of Bell, Rizzo was the city manager of Hesperia, Calif., where he was overpaid only to the tune of $78,000 a year.

The police chief, Randy Adams, was making $457,000 — $770,046 including benefits. The assistant city manager, Angela Spaccia, had a $376,288 salary, with a total compensation package of $845,960. Being just an assistant city manager, Angela had to pay for her own yacht.

After the Los Angeles Times reported the stratospheric government salaries in little Bell, and the people of the town revolted, the millionaire government employees all resigned.

That’ll show ‘em! Oops, except upon their resignations, they qualified for lifetime pensions worth, by some estimates, more than $50 million.

These insane salary packages were granted by the mayor and four city council members — who also set their own salaries. As a result, all but one was making $100,000 a year for these part-time jobs. After the council members’ salaries came to light, the four looters cut their salaries by 90 percent.

According to Nexis, there have been more than 300 news stories reporting on the Bell scandal. Guess how many mentioned the party affiliation of the corrupt government bureaucrats?

One. Yes, just one. Now guess if the government officials were Democrats or Republicans? Yes, that is correct.
Congratulations — you’ve qualified for our bonus round!

The one newspaper to cough up party affiliations, The Orange County Register, admitted that the corrupt officials were all Democrats only in response to reader complaints about the peculiar omission.

Well the one thing about the internet is that you can find stories even if the MSM isn’t reporting them. Then you wonder why? The MSM went from watchdog to lap dog and even felt tingles when Obama would speak. Everyone who didn’t support him was a bigot and anyone who protested his policies was a “tea bagger.” The MSM picked their side and it wasn’t the American people. They filtered and dismissed any news that would hurt him. They didn’t trust the unwashed masses with the truth so now no one trusts them. Go figure.

  • kairos

Basically, the internet and outlets like FOX that offer an alternative perspective to news stories, has revealed how agenda driven journalism has been. I think it just opened people’s eyes to the fact that they can’t even trust the news to give them straight facts. A lot of people have learned to analyze what they read or hear, and cross reference to get closer to the truth.

It’s especially disturbing and obvious when the news basically uses propaganda to conceal and protect those it favors, from scrutiny. The original purpose intended for journalism(by the founders) was as the public check to the government should the government’s interior checks fail because of a monopoly of partisanship. The news is supposed to ALWAYS hold the government accountable for it’s actions….not just when it’s governed by officials they oppose(since such opposition is blatantly anti-objective and a dangerous flaw of true journalism).

News bias has simply become so obvious recently that the public understands they have become part of the machine and are no longer a safety mechanism on the machine.

Hopefully journalistic darwinism rectifies the problem in the near future, because the government needs to be checked from the outside objectively to protect the citizens from corruption of the system….or maybe the current state of journalism will just simply become extinct(barring political bailouts), to be replaced by a new form of journalism.

Either way shit needs to change, because government is far too corrupt these days and is blatantly abusing it’s power like I’ve never seen before. It’s a shame.

    @C.Moore

So the entire poll is based on Fox alone? Because the rest of the media does not lie and distort, correct? How many writers at the NY Times had been found out fabricating stories? Where’s your check list of MSNC fabrications? Hell, Tommy Christopher from this site has a list nearly as long as yours, by himself.

You also are avoiding the one-sided nature to most of the press. Obama had barely any deep background stories done on him while he ran for office, unlike the usual Presidential candidates. There was ZERO exploration of his Senatorial voting record. His college years were completely ignored. John McCain was excoriated as rich and out of touch for not knowing how many homes he had, but they never told us how he donates over 25% of his money to charity, then while Obama and Biden were practically demanding citizens donate more money their own meager largesse (under 5% each) was never pointed out.

Look at how he was allowed to pass off his connection to William Ayers as just a guy in his neighborhood, when he once met in the man’s home, and was hand-picked by Ayers to chair an education board. Then the same forgiving media stampeded to Alaska to ferret out any info they could on Sarah Palin. Their version of her being connected to an Alaskan seccessionist movement had more traction than anything in Obama’s past. For this we were told it was because the woman was going to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency; the man actually running for President was not deemed as important.

This sort of thing was going on in the 2000 election. Remember George Bush having a college drug use history broadcast for weeks? That was without any evidence or witnesses, yet Al Gore had a former college roommate come forward a declare they both did drugs regularly in college. The press excused him and went back to badgering Bush with the same issue.

Before the mortgage meltdown, when Bush had a rising economy and low unemployment figures, the media were calling it a horrible economy. Now, when Obama’s stimulus has failed and jobless figures are near double-digits they do not point out his promise it would keep the number under 8%. Instead they massage the economic figures and point to “encouraging signals”, then express surprise when new reports show a downturn, and coin new phrases such as “Fun-employment” to suggest out of work people are enjoying their lives.

Hell, every single malaprop from George Bush was run in heavy rotatiion on the news networks, and when Obama says something that is equally dumb the press go out their way to come up with excuses. When he read the teleprompter and welcomed himself to the White House once they praised his effortless grace, when he said he visited 57 states they stated it was due to excessive travel, when he got the story wrong on where he met his wife they theorized it was due to jet-lag, and when he pronounced a word as “Corpse-man” they cleared their throats and reported on other stories.

ALL of that, and more, is the fault of Fox news, I’m sure.

Another example of the media being in the tank for Obama is a fairly insignificant (in my view) lie the whitehouse is putting out that Obama swan in the gulf, when in fact he wasn’t in the gulf at all. I wonder if the media would be interested in that story if it were Bush that lied. No need to answer, we all know they would have.
