Gov. Paterson Is Just Everyday Albany Scandalous…As Suspected

On Friday gossip was flying around New York media (and one imagines political) circles that the New York Times was working on some sort of bombshell story that was going to be so shocking that Paterson would be forced to resign! On Sunday Business Insider reported that that is exactly what was going to happen come Monday morning.

Except it didn’t. There was no story this morning, and according to Gabe Sherman at New York there will be none. Says Sherman:

According to a source close to the Paterson camp who is familiar with the scope of the Times’ reporting, the Times piece will be an in-depth profile of the governor focused on his personal character. There are likely to be new details about his marital infidelities, but the source added that it’s not going to be the bombshell the blogs have predicted. “The piece is PG-13, not XXX,” the source explained. “Not to say it won’t be problematic, but the Aqueduct situation? That’s potentially criminal. On his extramarital affairs, the question is who those people are, and what jobs they’ve held.”

Which is to say that in many other states any of the above revelations might easily be considered career enders. But not in Albany! And definitely not for Gov. Paterson, because as I noted on Friday, at this point one shudders to think what would qualify as “bombshell” where he is concerned.

Mr. Patterson. Saying you’re shocked by this is really disingenuous. They asked you nicely to step down and you refused, you had to know this would be their next move. Politics is a dirty, filthy business (as you already know from the way your predecessor was dealt with) and once you have played in it a while you can’t help but get dirty and filthy yourself. That’s not to say I think you’re guilty, because truly I don’t, but just saying, if you get into the pig pen to play, don’t be surprised if you get some slop smeared all over your Brooks Brothers suit!
