National security reporters for both Fox News and CNN are reporting that two Iranian Su-25 fighter jets fired on an unarmed American Predator drone over the Persian Gulf. The incident sparks new questions about the aggressive intentions of Iranian government as the Islamic Republic races towards completion of a nuclear weapon. The attack on U.S. military assets in the Middle East comes too late to influence the outcome of the presidential election, despite the fact that this attack occurred on November 1 and was not reported in the United States.
CNN notes that the Obama administration did not disclose the incident to the American media at the time of the Iranian assault on American military assets.
The Obama administration did not disclose the incident, which occurred just days before the presidential election on November 1, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN.
According to the images captured by the drone’s camera, the Iranian fighters shot repeatedly at the drone but were unable to hit the target.
CNN asked an American defense official whether the Iranian fighter’s inability to land a shot on the drone was the reason for the lack of a response, the official replied “it doesn’t matter, they fired on us.”
In December, 2011, Iran downed an American spy drone and put the platform on display for several weeks.
