Dan Rather Uses “Obama,” “Articulate” And “Watermelons” In Same Anecdote

video

Dan Rather, longtime anchor at the CBS Evening News and now of HD Net, has been known for his analogies and anecdotes (Ratherisms).

But Newsbusters has caught one that seems to have gone way off the rails during an appearance on the Chris Matthews Show Sunday – involving Pres. Obama and “watermelons.”

In an argument about the 2012 election, Rather was describing what he thinks “Republicans” will say – and what “a lot of independents will buy.” So he’s speaking as Obama’s critics:

The Republicans will make a case and a lot of independents will buy this argument. “Listen he just hasn’t been, look at the health care bill. It was his number one priority. It took him forever to get it through and he had to compromise it to death.” And a version of, “Listen he’s a nice person, he’s very articulate,” this is what’s been used against him, “but he couldn’t sell watermelons if it, you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic.”

Newsbusters describes it as “one mine after another in the racial minefield,” which certainly appears to be the case, even if Rather isn’t making the argument directly. Still, substituting another fruit for the one he choose would have made this a non-story.

The language of race can be tricky, as seen in the NBC Cafeteria story last month.

Thanks Steve! My favorite part is how Matthews tries to cut him off, knowing what a pile he’d just stepped in. Priceless!

  • Olby Sucks

    LOL!

  • Moderate

Dan Rather is a Liberal, this can be overlooked.

  • Olby Sucks

Can be? The faux royal queen has already given him a pass!

  • Grammie

I am sure TRRK will be here shortly to give us his deeply thoughtful analysis, as he did on the Biden?Mathews thread, of Rathers birthplace and all the cultural effects that would have had on him that proves Rather is completely blameless.

Now, GWB has the same background and we know that that line in defense of him if he had said the same thing would go over like a lead balloon.

  • Ted

It sounds like most believe that Rather made a racist comment. This is a good thing that card carrying tea-baggers recognize this!! It is a step in the right direction. So I can assume that the next time that Beck or Limbaugh make a racist remark (which will be any minute now) you will all call for his resignation. Well done, you’ve finally come around and I congratulate you!!

  • RED

Why you know ol Dan didn’t mean nuthin’ ’bout what he said. Maybe he shuda said pineapples, but hell, who ever sold pineapples on the side of the road in Texas? Oh wait, I didn’t mean nuthin ’bout Obama’s state heritage. Let’s try again. What ol Dan meant was that Obama couldn’t pour water out of a boot if the instructions wuz printed on the bottom.

  • Olby Sucks

Who called for rathers resignation over this? “ted,” how bout we put you in charge of informiong us of Becks or Limbaughs next “racist” remark, k? Any minute now you’ll be posting……..

  • MichelleF

Actually Ted, my concern is not so much what Rather said, but of the continued double-standard on how these types of things are covered if it’s a R V a D. I know you will say there is no double-standard, but that doesn’t fly anymore, because nobodies buying it anymore. But if it makes you feel better to cover your ears and continue to say, there is no media bias, don’t let us stop you!

  • Olby Sucks

Both sides have “double standards.” The one on the left is just much more prevalent.

  • Ted

MichelleF – Okay, so we can count on your outrage the next time that Beck or Limbaugh make a racist comment? That’s great news!! I hope others feel the same way you do!!

  • timzank

Kinda makes ya wonder what kind of jokes these old white guys like Rather, Matthews, Greasy Joe, and Dingy Harry tell when no microphones are around, now doesn’t it? You know, as they explained Harry’s remarks away with “men of a certain age and time”..?

Cracks me up when they shit in their own mess kit.

  • Olby Sucks

I thought for sure “ted” would have had something by now. Beck’s been on for 17 minutes and apparently “ted” has zilch……….;(

  • Grammie

    “Olby Sucks says:
    March 8, 2010 at 5:17 pm

    “ted” has zilch……….;(”

    Pearls of wisdom, OS.

  • MichelleF

Ted, Please give me just one statement of racism from either of them. And don’t go with the one where glenn says BO doesn’t like white people. That’s not a racist statement anyway, it’s what’s called an opinion. Can you blame some people for thinking that? You can’t sit in a pew of a racist for 20 years and not have it rub off a little bit. So if you’ve got something else please let me know.

  • MichelleF

Well Tim, according to Bill Clinton, a few years ago Obama would be fetching him coffee. And according to Biden, he’s the first clean, articulate black candidate. And according to Reid, he only has a black dialect if he wants to. And according to the LA times, he’s a magic negro. I could go on, but I’ll wait for Ted’s reply.

  • Cubby

Nothing to see here. Rather was using one of his old-timey folksy metaphors, which unfortunately included a poor choice of words. This is just an excuse for Mediaite to put up a shocking headline and (fingers crossed) get a Drudge link!

MichelleF: Remember Limbaugh’s “right on, right on” comments about how busses should be segregated? Personally I don’t think Rush is racist in the least, but he’s a smart guy – he knows who his audience is.
    http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/09/17/limbaugh-we-need-segregated-buses/

  • Ted

MichelleF – I assume you listen to them. Astonishing that one even has to come up with examples. You can do a quick search and probably come up with at least a dozen yourself…if you are interested. The statement that Beck made about Obama having a deep seated hatred for white people or white culture is without a doubt a racist comment. Beck himself won’t even talk about it. I don’t know if Beck or Limbaugh are racists; I do know that they make racist comments…regularly.

All I’m saying is that I’m glad we can all count on people like you to jump on them when they do make their predictable racist comments. Welcome aboard!

  • da-wdc

Well, this is an attention-getting headline, isn’t it?

IMHO this comment about watermelons is just a Ratherism. Newsbusters and the blogosphere on the right in general have a long-running vendetta against Rather, so I’m not surprised they’re trying to make this an issue. If you think he’s a terrible person, you probably thought that already. Personally I don’t care about this story.

“Bill Clinton, a few years ago Obama would be fetching him coffee.”
Actually, Clinton was alleged to have said, via secondhand sources, and not directly quoted, that years ago Obama would have been getting him coffee. In other words just starting out in politics at the lowest level when you have to do all the office work. “Fetch” is a pretty loaded term and even the hearsay non-quote didn’t allege that he said that.

  • Bias-Media

    @Ted

Let’s be real. If someone as high profile as Beck (or anyone high profile who is not a Liberal) makes racist comments “regularly”…most of the media, along with ACLU, NAACP, Rainbow Coalition, Al Sharpton, Media Matters, Daily KOs, Huffington Post, and the MoveOn.org crew would’ve stage a coordinated campaign calling on Fox and Clear Channel to release Beck; like they did with Don Imus and Rush Limbaugh (on that one occasion with ESPN). This, especially true since these organizations have tend to lean Left of center.

The fact that they haven’t basically disproves your argument.

  • writer

Where is the right’s outrage at Beck and Limbaugh? Probably the same place as the left’s outrage over Rev. Wright and Farrakhan.

  • Olby Sucks

“ted,” I noticed you ignored the other 3 examples put forth to you by michelle. Should we draw our own conclusions as to why?

  • MichelleF

I love it Ted, you make the claim and expect me to do the leg work. About what I expected. And the comment about BO having a hatred of whites is an OPINION!!

  • MichelleF

Oh, let me know if you need the definition of opinion, I’d be glad to provide it.

  • writer

One definition of ‘opinion’ is a belief based on probability. So for example if one says Obama is clean and articulate, the articulate part can be proven or disproven after listening, whereas the clean part is more of an opinion based on appearance. Proximity would be needed to verify whether being clean could be verified as fact, and of course wind conditions would come into play.

  • Ted

    Bias- Yeah, right…that disproves it.

Michelle – I don’t think there is anything Beck or Limbaugh could say that would cause you problems, And yeah, do the leg work if you are really interested…fact is, you aren’t or perhaps you just don’t want to know those troubling little facts…or maybe not so troubling in your case.

Wow, so much irony in such a short clip of video. The very fact that Rather said this to Matthews of all people — who can sniff out racism on the Right when any mundane subject is discussed – and Matthews tried in vain to step on Dan’s words to muzzle the offensive remarks is utter hilarity. But we all know the drill by now: Rather will have any number of excuses made on his behalf, then his stirling record on race issues will be trotted out, and then the President himself may even excuse him directly for using “inartful” language. He might even dismiss it as the words of a “Typical white” person.

But see, the double standard that exists is when even a minor phrasing can be contorted by someone on the Left and it is held up as an example of the racism ingrained in “those” people on the Right. Yet despite numerous, and growing, examples of Leftys making equally inflamatory comments there is no proclamation of inherent intolerance.

OMG no way dude, thats just too funny! Now its time for some of the activists to crawl out of the cracks and make a big ole “Black Thang” out of it.

  • INLOSAL

Rather’s wisecrack about ‘watermellons’ pales in comparison to our former mayor’s infamos email. Los Alamitos CA Mayor Dean Grose(REP) resigned his position after forwarding an email depicting a watermellon patch in front of the White House to, among others, a prominent black businesswoman in this small city. His Republican collegues on the city council just appointed his wife to the Planning Commission. BTW, she was also on the email list of the watermellon email. Go figure!

  • MichelleF

Ted, you might recall you are innocent in this country until proven guilty (for now anyway), so if you are going to accuse someone of racism, you need to back it up. As we all suspected, you cannot, so why not stop the smears. So much hatred on the left, how do you make it through the day.

  • sueNaustin

This is just a Texas phrase.

  • Latin2

    @Ted

You know what Beck said was true. Obama is racist towards whites. From Obama’s own book in his own words:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6zM5ldO35A

So apparently he was correct…Obama, from his own words, is racist…meanwhile where is the proof that Beck is racist.

  • Latin2

    @sueNaustin

    “This is just a Texas phrase.” uh, I am from Texas and I have never heard that phrase;

“but he couldn’t sell watermelons if it, you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic.”

Maybe that is said in certain circles, but not in anyone I ever heard of.

A google news search reveals no coverage by the major media. Should a conservative had uttered these words two or three cities would have been burned down by now.

Dan, you can quit trying to prove you are a democrat loyalist by demonstrating that you are both uninformed and a racist. To your credit, there are people to this day, TO THIS DAY, that believe the firehose spraying, german shepard unleashing, baton swinging monsters in Selma and Montgomery were Republicans! You and …Obama are everything Lenin, Stalin, Kruschev, Brezhnev, Gorbachev and Putin ever hoped for. Can the watermellon and Republican health care bill bit. Mission accomplished.

  • echodenea

Sometimes a watermelon…. IS just a watermelon People…. (I hate having to tiptoe over every freaking word….)
I freaking eat Watermelon; Chicken; yada yada and still have to watch what I say…. its food people.
Everyone just waits for white guys/girls to slip up on a silly word…. But any else can say (and does say) what ever pops outta there mouths without having to monitor themselves.

  • shootfromthehip

Here is Dan Rather, in his own words, on what happened and why he used “watermelons.”

That is known that cash can make us independent. But what to do if one doesn’t have cash? The one way is to try to get the loan or bank loan.

Firstly, you need to take a very close look at the shoes you are buying. It will tell you that the shoes you are buying are sheepskin or not. You should look at Ugg Knightsbridge Bootsthe sole of the boots normally it has the logo on it. MoreoverKid’s Ugg Bailey Button, a fake one will be flat at the sole. The stitching of the boots will also tell whether they are a genuine pair or a cheap fake.

Make your Ugg Flower Bootswinter months vibrant and beautiful with these sheepskin boots. So go and grab your pair of UGG bailey button today, until the stocks last. If you are lucky, enough you might be able to avail good discounts on your purchaseUgg Delaine. Complete your wardrobe by adding these boots in them, as without it your winter Ugg Adirondack Tall Bootwill not be the same. However, do keep in mind that when Uggs Jimmy Choo Shortyou are wearing these boots do not wear socks along with them, because it will not be able to keep the moisture away.
