Dick Cheney Has Never Apologized To Man He Shot

Attorney Harry Whittington, the man then Vice President Dick Cheney infamously shot whilst on a hunting trip has apparently never received an apology from Cheney (insert heartless joke here). In a longish profile in the Washington Post today Whittingon reveals that the complications from the incident were more serious than reported at the time.

Doctors said Whittington suffered a mild heart attack; he thinks it was something less, a heart “event.” Still, the injuries were more dire than previously disclosed. Whittington suffered a collapsed lung. He underwent invasive exploratory surgery, as doctors probed his vital organs for signs of damage. The load from Cheney’s gun came close to, but didn’t damage, the carotid artery in his neck. A rupture could have been fatal, particularly since it took the better part of an hour to transport him from the vast Armstrong ranch to the Kingsville hospital.

And yet, apparently Cheney has not been able to see his way to an apology.

But did Cheney ever say in private what he didn’t say in public? Did he ever apologize? Whittington, who has been talking about his life and career for hours, suddenly draws silent. “I’m not going to go into that,” he says sharply after a short pause. Harry Whittington is too gracious to say it out loud, but he doesn’t dispute the notion, either. Nearly five years on, he’s still waiting for Dick Cheney to say he’s sorry.

Say what you want about his politics, shooting someone in the face seems like something a decent human being apologizes for.

Mean while in stuff that actually matters to Americans, there is high foreclosures, high unemployment and oh yeah, there are Marines and soldiers in Afghanistan fighting.

Sometimes a little amusement is harmless and a welcome distraction. Reality always returns sooner or later.

This interview with Whittington was on local television this morning.

I recall when this happened, the scenario set up by media in Texas, newspaper and television, was the Big Dick was romantically albeit probably not sexually involved with the hostess, he guzzled three Bourbons, picked up his gun to go hunting, shot Whittington, admittedly by mistake but in a drunken state, and got whisked out of the state before he could be administered a BAT. It ended up being a really nice little Texas scandal involving all the elements of a Texas scandal, women, booze and guns. Oddly enough, the Big Dick’s popularity, even in Texas, plummeted, in part because Whittington and his family are well-known and well-respected. I’m not sure how much of the national media picked up on this, as local and state coverage was so thorough.

Whittington remains a class act, although I disagree with his politics.

The Big Dick remains no class.

Hey, you know there are these guys called “Democrats” and have been in charge of the government sine 2006? It seems like Mediaite is just another DNC parrot, since you don’t seem AT ALL interested in what they’re doing and focused solely on demonizing Republicans.

  • timzank

Once again nothing more than wishful perception and inference on the part of Glynnis.

“I’m not going to go into that,” neither confirms nor denies the interviewers questions now does it?

If this place is so terrible, there are plenty of others on the net to choose from. Have at it.

“…shot whilst on a hunting trip…” . Nobody normal talks like that . The wonderful and patriotic Cheney family will one day see their daughter Liz in high office . Liz is magnificent .

This guy should stay out of the news or Cheney will come back and finish the job!

Just a point of order, but the part in the blockquote (darkened background) are quotes from the article. The silence equals confirmation of no apology bit is the final part of the Post’s piece, so the implication came from the original author.

LOL, Paul. Looks like someone gave you a thumbs down, which means they don’t think it’s necessary to apologize for nearly shooting their face off.

Seriously, if someone disagrees with you on this site on politics, it doesn’t matter if you say pedophiles are bad people and bin Laden is not nice, they’ll still give you a thumbs down.

  • musiccityvic

Slow news day? Maybe tomorrow you can do an expose on Spiro Agnew.

Truer words have not been spoken here. I’m hardly surprised. Some of the posters here are really out there, though in their minds they represent the mainstream.

  • roxsteady

That’s right, change the subject. Cheney is a disgrace. You can say it. It’s obvious. and get off that “they have been in charge since 2006″ bullshit. They’ve only had the presidency since 2008 and they’ve also had the most filibusters in the history of goverment. With a 60 vote requirement, stop pretending that the asshats on the other side have had nothing to do with stopping, stalling, blocking legislation. It might fit the know nothing teabagger narrative but, it ignores the facts.

  • JamesA1102

So what, Aaron Burr still hasn’t apologized to Alexander Hamilton for shooting him either.

  • Harry Flashman

Cheney is a disgrace? And babbling Biden isn’t? The most blatant liar the White House has ever had the dishonor to have as an occupant isn’t? Al Franken isn’t? Barbara Let’s-Send-$600,000-To-Our-Enemies Boxer isn’t?

Jerry Call-Her-A-Whore Brown isn’t? Harry This-War-Is-Lost Reid isn’t? Charlie Mine-Mine-Mine Rangel isn’t? Maxine waters, Barney Frank, and the rest of the Democratic crew that propped up a failed Fannie and Freddie arent?

    You libs are absolutely incredible.

What some of you here at Mediate see as a story is just mind boggling to me. The title is totally false. It is just your speculation that he never apologized. Good grief. For an online mag that is so good at many things, you really become a low rent Gawker when you want to.

  • The Real Royal King

I still haven’t heard why Whittington came forward now. It’s no big liberal plot. Whittington is a Republican. He’s obviously still smarting over this, and the Cheneys, as usual, acted horribly. What a grand sense of entitlement these miserable people have.

Election Day is a couple of weeks away. The Dems are panicking, so they try to resurrect the boogeyman they saw in Dick Cheney. Nixon’s next. Oh yeah, did they mention that they have “proof” that Lincoln used to stomp on Chihuahuas?

People seriously believe this is some liberal conspiracy to win votes? Some of you folks are seriously nutty.

Uh, the guy being interviewed is a Republican. Maybe this Republican had a conspiracy in the hopes of making strange people like you panicky. Besides, if the Dems want to scare their base, all they have to do is show a picture of Limbaugh. You know, the guy with great family values.

I get it! You’re calling “Dick” Cheney “the Big Dick.” When I was 13 years old, I would have found that to be absolutely hilarious! I imagine the scene now:

TRRK: “Dick Cheney is a Big Dick!”

AF: (Laughing) “Yeah, and I bet he eats his own boogers, too.”

TRRK and AF high five each other.

    Dan, calling Dan!

When are you going to demand some truth from your columnists?

Glynnis – your headline is a flat out lie; this is twice this week.

And here I used to respect your writing ability, but twice now you have distorted, misrepresented, and falsified a statement just to gain a hit or two. Well, you are taking hits for sure….not the good kind.

I respectfully request you update your headline with some truth and fact and apologize to all mediaite staff and readers for your false headline.

Thank you in advance for recognizing your mistake and issuing the apology.

Nothing like a Dick Cheney hunting story on a slow news day. Maybe we can cover Spiro Agnew and Dan Quayle while we are at it.

I’m new here, but from what I’ve seen so far, I would think no one at this is going to ask Clinton to apologize.

That said, if Dick Cheney did not apologize (and it certainly isn’t clear from what is provided above), he should. Personally though, I think he probably did–and profusely so.
