Ed Rendell: Obama On The View Like Going On Jerry Springer

poll

Tomorrow President Obama will make history by becoming the first sitting president to appear on a daytime talk show. This is perhaps less exciting than it might have been were Obama not such a ubiquitous presence in the media. However considering it comes on the heels of the Shirley Sherrod debacle (perhaps, intentionally so) Obama’s appearance on The View will likely provide at least some good soundbites.

But is it a good idea? Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell does not think so…to put it mildly. Here is how he described the appearance on Morning Joe yesterday. [Watch below].

“I think the president should be accessible, should answer questions that aren’t pre-screened, but I think there should be a little bit of dignity to the presidency…“I wouldn’t put him on Jerry Springer either, it is different a little bit. But I think the president of the United States has to go on serious shows.”

One of the serious shows Rendell recommends is Morning Joe. Also, does Rendell ever watch The View? I realize the decibel level can sometimes be irritatingly elevated but it is about as far from Jerry Springer as Morning Joe is. That said, it does sort of beg the question: Next stop American Idol? What do you think, good or bad idea for Obama to chat it up with the ladies of The View?

The View is a collection of airheads. These women make people ashamed that women have the right to vote.

Our Rainbow Unicorn would rather pander to liberal women than a slice of the electorate he knows he’s already lost. He’s not presidential so this is par for his course. American’s will vote him out in 2012 and restore the honor, integrity and stature of the office.

I don’t see what the big deal is. We’ve got other more important problems. However, he’s obviously more comfortable with women as he’s a fairly “dandy” type of guy. This is just par for the course.

Maybe Joy will ask him about this:

Well, the regime is at it again:

SEC Says New FinReg Law Exempts It From Public Disclosure

Under a little-noticed provision of the recently passed financial-reform legislation, the Securities and Exchange Commission no longer has to comply with virtually all requests for information releases from the public, including those filed under the Freedom of Information Act.

The law, signed last week by President Obama, exempts the SEC from disclosing records or information derived from “surveillance, risk assessments, or other regulatory and oversight activities.” Given that the SEC is a regulatory body, the provision covers almost every action by the agency, lawyers say. Congress and federal agencies can request information, but the public cannot.

That argument comes despite the President saying that one of the cornerstones of the sweeping new legislation was more transparent financial markets. Indeed, in touting the new law, Obama specifically said it would “increase transparency in financial dealings.”

The SEC cited the new law Tuesday in a FOIA action brought by FOX Business Network. Steven Mintz, founding partner of law firm Mintz & Gold LLC in New York, lamented what he described as “the backroom deal that was cut between Congress and the SEC to keep the SEC’s failures secret. The only losers here are the American public.”

Did he say the same thing about Obama’s appearances on the late night shows? Are those “serious shows?” I wonder if there is a tinge of sexism here. Is it less “serious” because it is a group of women who discuss a wide variety of issues as seen through the female prism? The View hosts discuss far more serious matters than do Leno or Letterman on a nightly basis. I am confident that ladies of The View will treat the President with the requisite respect..

  • AngelPeters

Thank you, Dan. A voice of reason and fairness, someone seeing the big picture.

Just a “tinge” of sexism, though? I would say, more than just a tinge.

  • http://SailRabbits.com Magister

I have to agree with Dan, somewhat.

I’d call The View more serious than the nighttime shows. Sure, they have a lot of lighter segments and non-serious content, but Dame Edna and Pee-Wee Herman have appeared on every show in-character and on a scale of “seriousness”, I’d probably rank The View in the same neighborhood and perhaps a little higher than the second hour of Today, which doesn’t tank the whole show.

As for my “somewhat” qualifier, it’s a new day and our leaders are trying to find new ways to communicate. It’s for that reason that I’d likely not begrudge an Obama or any Presidential candidate’s appearance on Ellen DeGeneres. Of course she’s not as “serious” as The View , the old Good Morning America with David Hartman and Joan Lunden or Today with J. Fred Muggs, but I’m sure she’d show the office proper respect and she’s not likely to ask about his underwear.

Sexist? Really? How can that be? Name one man who is on The View? And Joy doesn’t count?

And there are men I have sent knee-pads to also.

MSNBC host Chris Matthews effectively admitted yesterday he was an unpaid member of Barack Obama’s press office.

MSNBC logo bigMatthews appeared Thursday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe with Joe Scarborough and was asked for his opinion about Congressman Rahm Emanuel’s initial public reluctance to accept the position as chief of staff for president-elect Obama. Emanuel has since accepted the post.

During the MSNBC interview, a suggestion was made that there might be turmoil within the new Obama administration, but Matthews refused to get drawn into the conversation, instead saying that as a reporter he was unwilling to “question motives.” (See YouTube video)

Matthews: “Yeah, well, you know what? I want to do everything I can to make this thing work, this new presidency work, and I think that –

Scarborough: “Is that your job? You just talked about being a journalist!”

Matthews: “Yeah, it is my job. My job is to help this country…because this country needs a successful presidency.”

And of course, Mr. Ed :

“I busted my ass for Obama. I mean, I took my radio show on the road, I did town halls, talked to people… and President Obama, you don’t come to Ed– he goes to Bret Baier on Fox News, in my time slot. ”

And hate? You are joking? They willingly get down on their knees for Barry; it’s their choice and desire.

@writer: To be fair, I don’t think Jerry Springer ever swung a chair. I don’t know about Geraldo and would have to go back and look, but either way, Geraldo, Springer and Beck, all simply rode the ratings zeitgeist of their time and from a demographic point of view, they seem to have been popular with portions of the same audience.

  • writer

Yeah, Mag. It’s the guests who do the chair swinging. And I doubt if Obama would ever appear on Beck, anyway. Too many sticky questions. But you have to admit a few breakaway bottles would spice it up.

  • http://apostrophejones.com Apostrophe jones

@writer: Yeah. The problem with Obama on Beck would be that there would be no breakaway bottles. I’m sure Glenn would be polite and would ask some of his questions, which the President would answer in measured terms and the whole thing would play like a civics lesson.

(Which is likely why the President would never appear on Beck. It’d do nothing for him politically, but as the Sunday shows and others play back the boring tape for analysis, Beck’s ratings would be the winner.

While from The View, the Obama should get a tiny bump among the targeted demographic and though I’m sure he’ll get a couple of “substantial” questions, a lot of the interview will likely be about White House life, the wife and kids, plus maybe a lighthearted thing about his method of escape.)

IOW – Because my parenthetical was poorly-worded) Both The View and the President would receive some benefit from his appearance. They would get a ratings bump and he would get to speak to a targeted demographic, where he’ll get to explain a couple of policies and better humanize his persona.

Bootleghaircut’s Rule #4 of Dealing with Unihnged Conservative posters-”they will eventually call you gay”.

Eventually after having lost an argument using all available talking points, but sometimes used at the beginning of an argument to forstall looking completely stupid -conversatives without fail will insinuate in some way that you are a homosexual. This is their tertiary attack and a reliable fallback. Sometimes they wil single out another poster who agrees with you other times they will create a “boyfriend meme”. the best of these kind of attacks are actually related to the topic at hand. Once a conservative has gone this route its best non to re-engage with them as they have exhausted the sum total of their knowledge and are now relying on feudian aspects from their subconscious which they project onto who ever has gotten under their skin and or publically embarrassed them. If a female goes for this line of attack do not attempt a rejoinder as clearly the female conservative is no “real lady” and should be left alone. If a male conservative attempts this you are allowed a certain allotment of posts to either refute of counter attack with slurs about his linage, ancestors, and or lack of intelligence but the best course of action is simply to walk away from such a cretin.

@Stephen Hogan: Gordon’s “insult” was actually pretty benign compared to some of the much more offensive anti-homosexual rhetoric that sometimes works its way into comments. Our President, a member of the “Rat Pack” perhaps he will sing “I want it..MY WAY!! He’d better tone up those pipes since he will need to look elsewhere for employment after he leaves “Willie Wonka’s Wonderland” oops, I mean, the White House. I have never seen one man do as much damage to this country, in such a short time, perhaps he is aware that this is his last term and he is speeding things up before he leaves office. He’s showing a lot of favoritism although I hope these same “buddies” will remember him after they are thrown out of their high paying, do nothing, jobs. This administration has brought disgrace & a state of hopelessness to our fine nation. I used to have faith in America, I mean, that is how I grew up, I can remember Presidents’ coming to see school children, joining hands with other countries, especially in the wars with Japan & Germany, the horror, the terrible losses…even now, as men are dying in Afghanistan, where is our President? Even now, with our environment now in doubt, with the oil spill, where is he? He is definitely not presidential because he is merely enjoying the fame of the Presidency. I mean…what president ever had 3 helicopters & an extra Air Force Once…just in case!! Not to mention the endless parties, parties & wardrobe enhancement. Michelle, no matter what she wears, will always be Michelle for the East side…sorry. Obama puts on a good act, is a disgrace to have disowned his own dear grandmother who raised him, in spite of her advanced age..well, what else could she do, her daughter probably broke her heart. This mysterious president has covered up so much of his past that he is untouchable. I liked the comments on Bush’s drinking…made him human. I like the idea his daughter was a normal college girl..makes her human. You have to watch the ones who hide everything..they are the ones you cannot trust..even in life, I am sure. We have to really get serious with this administration..they are breaking all the rules & when the public protests, they are immediately protected by the “slowly dying news media” CNN, HLN, creepy Chris Matthews, Rich Sanchez, the latin commentator who could play a part in the “Sopranos” or should be doing a sports show..news? nope. I love Fox News because THEY TELL THE TRUTH and their ratings show it. Glenn Beck comes on at the worst time 5:00 PM & still has the highest ratings. That should tell you something. If President Obama had stuck to his original promises of how he was going to help straighten out the crime rate, work on the environment & new technology, etc, I would not be complaining but he is doing everything contrary to his original proposals..was this a ploy? I am not rich, I worked until I married & paid my house off in 5 yrs. .a lot of sacrifices, no new clothes, no fancy tv’s or cars…sacrifice!! How dare these people expect to receive a check for hanging on corners, stealing cars, faking illness, etc..now we even have the immigration problem..do we have to pay for them too or,, foolishly, have we already been paying for them. Why can’t they fight their own government & live where they were born. There is certainly plenty of land there to grow things..but, I don’t think that is their intent.I think they want the easy life. America, I have seen it all, I am a senior, I have seen the good & the bad but this President makes Jimmy Carter look like Ronald Reagan. God, we were lucky to have him, he gave us pride, he didn’t need fancy clothes, jewelry or make up to appear on television. He was Ronnie…and we loved him. This President loves only one person…himself! and it shows. I hope we will be more selective when we choose the next man to run our country because he will certainly have a mess to clean up. Mr. Obama had a golden opportunity to show America that he was for “all” of the people, somehow, he lost his way. I hope we can get out of this mess. God Bless America! Helen Nordo

Oh, and we probably shouldn’t forget about the blatant racism that often runs rampant through some of the comment threads. Occasionally I’ve flagged one or two of the most offensive and thankfully they’ve been promptly removed, but the line that I’ve had to draw has been pretty high because if it were any lower, helping to police the threads would be like a fulltime job.

It goes to show that Obummer knows his place, with “air heads” of the daytime ilk.

Obummer is a MORON and too stupid to know that he going on there is NOT the same as Clinton playing his sax on Jay Leno.

Maybe, Jerry Springer CAN get Obummer to go on there, too. He could have a segment where he fights the “birthers”. Now, if you wanted ratings, THAT would be how to do it.

  • writer

Mag, I think there are more accusations of racism than actual racist comments. For example, most of our left wing posters say I’m racist. But a look at any of my posts show that I’ve never used the ‘n’ word or said that all minorities are bad. I have, however, pointed out that racism doesn’t only come from white people. And since I went to an integrated inner city high school, I’ve tried explaining to people such as Royal King, who says he attended private schools, that integration doesn’t always make for a utopian setting. There are people of other races who are racist. But since the King grew up in a lily white enviornment, he scoffs at the notion. That’s all it takes for the left to label anyone a racist, just having a different life experience than the one they’ve had.

Don’t confuse the leftists here with those kinds of facts. They play the race card against everyone who disagrees with them. But the laugh is on them. They become a joke by constantly toss out these accusations at people they have never met and who never make racial slurs in their posts. They might as well take a random name out of the phone book and accuse that person or racism, given the arbitrariness, frequency and lack of evidence that surrounds these theatrical outbursts.

Good point. I’ve seen the comments you are talking about during my time lurking and occasionally posting. I guess I was shocked by the extremely juvenile nature of his comment. The last time I heard someone call someone else gay as an insult, it came from a 12 year old.

Bootlikker and RRK hide behind phony names so they can drive by and spread lies with no consequences.

That’s the same attack I’ve seen you use on your youtube page comments.

“I think in your case its more speaking as a congential idiot than say as a woman.”

Here’s bootlicker’s “tinge” of sexism. And Rush is sexist? What a friggin’ joke. These lefty loons think they can puke out anything.

No, I would be a ‘hypocrite’ if I called out others and then insulted someone else. The thing is, I don’t call people names on this site, so therefore, I am not a hypocrite.

You really need to get a dictionary, child.

That is not what the word hypocrite means, though you have a common misconception of the word.

    1.
a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
    2.
a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.

See, I believe your outrage is selective and affected, sweet pea!

You got me there, you cunning fellow. However, I do not fit into either category. I do not believe there is anything to be gained by calling people names, so I don’t do it.

Outrage is too strong of a word, I feel. I did select you to engage because you are the most prolific and Some_dude asked why you say such vile things. I merely labeled you a troll because you seem to take great pleasure in calling liberals names.

I have stated that I feel the conservative-liberal hatred is a cancer to our country and I deplore attempts to dehumanize the other side.

We have different philosophies, but we are all on the same team.

@felixw: That’s a nice meme and though it had existed previously, unfortunately the Ackerman kid threw fuel on the fire. But as I said, I’ve had to draw my line incredibly high, much higher than I would on any blog for which I may be responsible because when I report something as offensive, I don’t want to be a bother, so I’ve only reported when the comment added nothing to the discussion and was unquestionably racist.

Poor Hogan, so asking people to use their real name is an “attack”. Just how dumb are YOU?
