From Washington Post To NBCU: Dave Weigel Joins MSNBC As Paid Contributor

video

Team Weigel rejoice – it didn’t take Dave Weigel very long to land on his feet after he resigned last week from The Washington Post.

Tonight at the end of Countdown, Keith Olbermann introduced new “MSNBC contributor” Dave Weigel.

Olbermann teased an announcement regarding Weigel throughout the program, and when he finally introduced his guest around 8:55pmET, he said, “We are very proud to announce is, as of like, I don’t know, 20 minutes ago, an MSNBC contributor. Welcome Dave…and you thought last week was fun, wait until you see what this week holds for you.”

Weigel’s segment was about an interview he did with Rick Barber (the guy behind this ad). Olbermann closed the interview by reiterating, “MSNBC contributor Dave Weigel, great thanks, as always, and good luck with this.”

Directly after the show, Olbermann tweeted:

And confirming, @DaveWeigel is now MSNBC contributor @DaveWeigel Welcome aboard and my condolences, uh, congratulations

So, the Washington Post Company drops Weigel last week – some would say prematurely – and NBCU scoops him up a few days later. Mediaite has confirmed from MSNBC that Weigel’s role will be both paid and exclusive to the network. It’s likely, then that we’ll see Weigel show up on other non-Countdown programs on MSNBC as well.

So Weigel has a TV gig already set – will there be more announcements coming later this week?

Here’s the segment:

Finally MSNBC is turning into the network it should’ve been since day 1! All of your Fake News Zombies can eat Roger Ailes’ shit. MSNBC is on its way up. CNN and HLN are slowing starting to die. MSNBC needs to prove to liberals that it is a REAL progressive network. At one point, they had more right wing LOONS than liberal commentators! Michael Savage, Alan Keyes, Tucker Carlson, Pat Buchanan, and even Jesse Ventura had shows on MSNBC!!! How fucking crazy is that??? Thank the lord that Phil Griffin knows what he is doing. Fuck the haters, LONG LIVE MSNBC!!! We’re on our way up!

Really? Considering the fact that MSNBC is now the 2nd highest network on cable, behind ONLY Fox News. MSNBC’s primetime shows are the highest rated news shows that are NOT on Fake News. MSNBC is on its way up. It alienated A LOT of liberals by hiring right wing fanatics.

Dave Weigel is the fairest person you will find to write about the tea party and the larger conservative movement. It’s a shame he’s working on MSNBC as opposed to a more balanced news channel (and I don’t mean Fox).

And by the way, partisan morons, Olbermann and O’Reilly are woven from the same cloth. Fox News and MSNBC are both incredibly biased. One is not better than the other. Get over yourselves.

Hey libs..you still trying to say this punk is a conservative? And hippy boy, you never watch FOX so how would you know? They always have guests from both sides on to debate the issues..msnbc almost never does that. I watch the other guys more than FOX just to make sure I know the facts that I base my opinions on..you should try it.

Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough are huge conservatives and work for MSNBC.

    Dave Weigel is a libertarian.

  • TfT

Joe is NOT a conservative, even a little one, much less a huge one. Please m. At best he is a moderate who has no problems criticizing conservatives in full force while defending liberals to the tee.

Stupid analysis. The reason why Fox News has such high rating is very simple. They appeal to an audience (White Conservatives) that do NOT have another network to go to. In fact, their ratings should be MUCH HIGHER considering this fact. MSNBC has to compete with CNN, HLN, ABC, ethnic channels, and the Internet (where most young liberals get their news). On top of that, the previous manager of MSNBC decided to LOAD THE PRIME TIME LINEUP with RIGHT WING LOONS. That alienated A LOT of people. Fox News is the EXCEPTION to the rules of cable news. MSNBC’s true competition lies in CNN, HLN, and other cable news channels. IT DESTROYS THEM.

Liberals pride themselves of being tolerant of other races and religions. The VAST majority of tea bagging scum think Obama is a Kenyan Muslim. Don’t tell me that isn’t based on bigotry.

    It is a false pride:

“A few years ago, he (Obama) would be serving us coffee.” — Bill Clinton

” He (Obama) doesn’t sound like a Negro unless he wants to.” Senator Harry Reid

He (BHO) said I know this is going to be — lead to some, quote, difficulty for the guys who work on those rigs.
Well, if he thinks that some guys on the rigs are the only people that are going to be affected by a six-month oil moratorium, he’s out of his cotton-picking mind. — Julia Reed, Newsweek senior editor on CNN on Anderson Cooper 360, June 16.

“He ( Obama) couldn’t sell watermelons to….” Dan Rather
“See, Barack’s been talking down to black people … I want to cut his nuts off.” Jesse Jackson
Bill Maher on how he expected BHO to act with BP: “I was expecting a “real black president”– you know, the kind that “lifts up his shirt so they can see the gun in his pants.”

In praising former KKK-member Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) for casting his 17,000th vote, Dodd claimed that “I do not think it is an exaggeration at all to say to my friend from West Virginia that he would have been a great senator at any moment.” Dodd went on to say, “He would have been right at the founding of this country. He would have been in the leadership crafting this Constitution. He would have been right during the great conflict of Civil War in this nation.”

Let us review some of the more colorful instances of leftists going overboard so the next time Greener plays pundit he will be well-versed in his own side’s hateful rhetoric.

Just last week, libtalker Mike Malloy called Sarah Palin a “whore,” a “streetwalker,” and a “crazy bitch.” This is the same Malloy who called on Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Bill O’Reilly to kill themselves and suggested that Republicans orchestrated the Christmas day bombing attempt to damage the Obama administration.

Or how about Bill Maher in 2007 lamenting that the assassination of Dick Cheney had failed. He has also wished for the death of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.

Rosie O’Donnell has quite a colorful history as well. Aside from being a 9/11 truther, she has called compared the Catholic Church to the Jonestown suicide cult, crudely mocked Chinese people, and has called American troops “terrorists.” She is slated to get her own talk show next year, by the way.

And of course we have Olbermann, who called Scott Brown an “irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, sexist, ex-nude model, tea bagging, supporter of violence against women and against politicians with whom he disagrees” and Michelle Malkin a “mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick on it.”

In fact, the latter Olbermann quote made the Culture and Media Institute’s list of the top 10 most disgusting attacks against conservative women.

Tell me more about lib tolerance, fool!

LMAO! This is it? Thats the best you’ve got? Those “racism” comments are taken out of context and you know that. As far an vulgarity goes, the left wing has NOTHING on the right wing when it comes to attacking and vilifying. Go to Media matters and look at the comments your noble right wing political commentators have made. This is too easy. Not worth the additional effort.

Sure, I’d love to be a multimillionaire and have the opportunity to influence 2 million people a night. That works for me! I am Keith Olbermann! Fuck Fox News! Fuck O’reilly! I think I’ll hire Spitzer’s hooker and ram hundred dollar bills up her asshole!” “PRIMETIME RATINGS are the main source of revenue for cable news channels. Knowing the inbred nature of tea baggers, I will break it down VERY SIMPLY for you. Ready? Stop masturbating with the cross and listen closely….After reading this, please remove the butt plug from your asshole and spit out the large balls of shit that are rotting your teeth.” Thank you for your consideration! Grammie

Are you blind? Haven’t you read the comments the right wingers have made? I’m just playing at their level. I’m not a coward. I didn’t run and tell the moderator that people were making nasty comments. What a load of BS.

What a coward and hypocrite. Why don’t you tattle on the right wingers who were calling Weigel a “butt boy”?

    Typical right wing cowardice.

  • notsofast

Those “racism” comments are taken out of context and you know that. ”

Typical lib excuse! Everything is out of context!

    LOL

I guess the DailyKos and HP didn’t want Weigel.

    ROTFLMAO!

  • Grammie

James et al loon de plumes, it seems I did “tattle” on those nasty right wingers b/c you are one under certain names, such as barney and Munch. TRRK even had a nickname for that puppet, Snacker.

You and your sock puppets now call me a coward? Besides bordering on delusional pretending to be several people on the same blog is the height of cowardice, IMO.

“If I get banned for profanity and vulgarity, many of your jesus freak, tea baggers are going down with me! 1 vs 6-8 conservatives is well worth the flame war and any ban.”

You ALL go for it. It should be a unique experience, taking a principled stand, for all your incarnations.

My mistake. Steve said Murf and I misread it as Munch.

That said, you don’t have a sterling record for keeping your rhetoric clean either. Granted that so far no one has risen to the level of James et al (not even Bovine) but that doesn’t absolve the rest of us to keep things reasonably clean.

Really? Show me where I have been “unclean.”

You are absolutely right and I was totally wrong for which I apologize!!!

I don’t know who I thought you were but upon reading some of your comments you are obviously not that person. In fact, I generally agree with you and you obviously showed restraint many times.

I guess the “grow a pair” got my hackles up and I ran from the mouth completely bypassing my brain.

    Again, I’m sorry!

Hey Co, I don’t know who the hell you are either but that is the way I took it b/c nothing I have seen here from anyone rises to the level of JR and it seemed reasonable that the others were included with him b/c they are all sock puppets.

well i would suggest if you dont want to look like a typical tool on comment boards, you take the alternative path and not sound like a paranoid whack job. claiming that someone is multiple users posting back and forth is about as weak as calling someone a racist because they agree with the teaparty.

  • felixw

Seems both CNN and MSNBC are responding to Fox by hiring people who have resigned in disgrace from their previous job. Makes it interesting to guess the next move of these media geniuses. Maybe they will hire Pee Wee Herman to replace Larry King.

  • Dandee

I feel confident that MSNBC has openings for other dumb DemocRats. So, if you are one, go on and join all the others on the low rated station.

FOX blows PMSNBC out of the water:

James “I have no problem manipulating the facts” Randal posted numbers, but he spent time editing out Fox’s numbers. How much time did it take to censor Fox’s numbers?

I have tried to avoid commenting on Andrew Breitbart’s bone-headed shenanigans, simply because I do not want to fan the overbearing flames of his lunatic bulbous ego.

Nevertheless, I have found this whole matter with listserve to offer the most hilarious revelations as to what Andrew and his clones really are all about.

This situation floats so many ironies to the surface that it makes Breitbart’s tired collection of websites seem more akin to a poorly-maintained ensemble of over-flowing toilets (…and that is saying something if Breitbart can out-do his own foul and crusty trail of bs!!!)

But the most wonderful irony is that Breitbart has proven (by his own words, his Machiavellian intrusiveness and his shameless bribe) EXACTLY what he is…

    He IS the thought police.

    He IS Big Brother.

He IS that complete Orwellian loss of privacy which conservatives pretend to so passionately fear (but which they are only too happy to enforce when it applies to a woman’s reproductive rights, to the sanctity of gay relationships, to the rights of minorities, to personal emails, etc…)

BigGovernment/BigJournalism.com, indeed…. no false advertrising there!

With the help of the internet, Breitbart goes even farther than McCarthy did.

He can and will ferret out any minutiae of personal trivia and every edited soundbyte to shape the propaganda that he and his political masters so desperately crave. He can bribe, edit, cut/paste and fabricate his way into a balkanized media fairyland, chock full of all sorts of bogus and self-serving conspiracies.

Even one of his own editors has warned about the Kim-Jong-Il-esque loss of personal privacy that the listserve controversy reveals (and which Andrew is only too happy to impose.)

(And certainly, by his fallacious assault on ACORN, Andrew has shown himself to be quite comfortable using the EXACT SAME deceitful techniques as the government of Iran to attack his own political targets… I guess since both identify as avid conservatives bent on pressing a bogus mis-reading of heritage, its only fitting that they should share the same under-handed methods.)

    Andrew is not a political watch-dog, and he’s not a whistle-blower.
He’s simply a well-connected and over-funded propagandist too coked-up, methed-out and drunk on politics to reflect upon (or even notice) the grotesque contradictions of his own agenda.

Like convicted criminal James Okeefe, Breitbart only appeals to the lunatic right whose anger he hopes to foment/co-opt with absolutely no concern for consequences.

Even personal privacy is in the cross-hairs, and Andrew belies the freedom he pretends to stand for by his own intrusiveness (or even more so by his conniving bribe.)

Andy and his pals don’t care about the right to privacy (unless it applies to groups like Haliburton, BP or KBR). They work at the behest of Karl Rove, and will do whatever it takes to get their master back behind the seats of power.
That’s what this is really all about… with all his hyperbole about attacking all things liberal, Breitbart has just as much admitted to that himself.

Screw your Constitutional rights, Andy is on the war path.

The next point brought to the surface is the nature of Weigel’s posted messages.

Now, I have read several articles by Dave Weigel, and I am truly surprised to hear him say ANYTHING disrespectful about the right.

If Dave really feels as put-off by some republicans as he claimed on listserve, then it is to his credit as a REAL journalist that no one would ever be able tell he felt that way from his work.
Clearly, whatever one might think of Weigel, he does know how to keep his work distinct from his private, personal opinions (which is a nearly impossibility in Andy’s world, especially with knuckle-heads like O’keefe or Patterico on his pay-roll.)

It speaks volumes about the angry pack of cattle that Breitbart drives when a professional like Weigel has to apologize to such an undeserving crop of idiots, for nothing more than having personal opinions that are distinct from his work.

It speaks even more about them that they cannot (indeed, WILL NOT) see that his personal thoughts did not in any way affect the mostly sympathetic picture which he paints of them in his own articles.

Another matter this brings to the front is the actual behavior Weigel was criticizing.

For instance, Dave was speaking, in part, to the completely bratty and over-dramatic anger evidenced by the Tea baggers, and how that anger was being manipulated by conservative politicians. He was talking about how impossible they are to deal with, even by someone on their side.

And he wasnt lying. They are impossible, and have made a choice to be such. Breitbart is an absolute case and point.

If Breitbart doesn’t want Sugar-Daddy Drudge to be criticized for his drama, he might want to tell him to not be such an explosive prick. If Tea-partiers don’t want to be seen as paranoid and irrational bigots happy to fly off on anything (even when observed by one so obliging to them as Weigel), then they should not make such a point of acting that way.

Weigel has always offered some of the most professionally sympathetic articles on the Tea bag movement (as opposed to Fox, which is nothing more than a dishonest and unreliable echo-chamber)… I would only fault Dave for being too accommodating to the right, and (with few exceptions) of not holding them accountable for their actions as much as he should have.

So Andy, if someone so supportive of your camp is offering this criticism, you might want to try to be less defensive, and see the truth of which he speaks. In this case, it’s a review you and your pals desperately need.

Finally, Breitbart got a big woody over the idea that he can accuse the journalists on the listserve of being political operatives, and of colluding with left-leaning politicians (which is a joke when you consider the fact that it really was just a private message board that actively excluded political affiliates.)

He even offered a bribe as fat as his own knobby head in order to make the case (because, as history has repeatedly shown, big-dollar bribes always get reliable and unbiased information, right?… Hey, that should be his next website “BigDollarBribe.com”)

Nevertheless, such an accusation seems really hypocritical when it comes from someone who does, indeed, set up his battle plans with the likes of Dick Armey, Steve King , Karl Rove etc….

Sorry Andy, bribe all you want… play whatever underhanded games you are required to (on your masters tab and at their behest), but the only “journalists” so thoroughly entrenched in such political collusion are you and your crew.

It’s a matter of public record, and no amount of money can change that.

Attempting to actualize his fantasy with such a bribe reveals nothing more than Andy’s repeated propensity to project his own worst qualities onto others, and faulting them for using the exact same defenses that he does (I refer people to Breitbarts handling of O’Keefe’s arrest … eg, “The media judged O’Keefe prematurely!” “The truth will come out when you see the whole unedited tape!” etc… Karma can be a real bitch, Andy. Watch what you dish out, because its going to come right back to you, just like it did with the criminal whose crimes you fostered.)

Andy has made a career of this absurd behavior, and even among conservatives who I know, that is becoming more and more clear.

But keep at your agenda Andrew, because through that you are making it very obvious what you are, even without criticism from elsewhere. You do a far better job than I or anyone else can when it comes to discrediting you.
