GEICO Announcer Fired For Calling Tea Partiers ‘Retarded,’ Potential Murderers

video

You’d think people learned that if Rahm Emanuel can’t get away with it, it’s probably best not to use the word. Lance Baxter, AKA “D.C. Douglas,” the voice actor most notable for his work in GEICO commercials, has been dismissed from his job for using his highly recognizable voice to leave a voicemail in the mailbox of Tea Party group Freedomworks asking how many of its members were “mentally retarded” and what the response would be when a member inevitably killed someone.

Douglas responded to his removal with a blog post that is now offline but partially reproduced on PRWire.com:

“I called as a private citizen to make a complaint,” explains Mr. Douglas. “Racism and homophobia are my Achilles heal, but unfortunately my message included inappropriate words and I am sorry for that. However, telling their members to harass my employer to get me fired is an egregiously disproportionate response to my actions.”

He also says on his Facebook page that he is going to “take tea bags and make lemonade” and thanks fans for being “NICE” and “REASONABLE.”

It’s worth noting that GEICO is not exactly in the Tea Party movement’s pocket, either, as it was one of many companies to boycott Tea Party darling The Glenn Beck Program when its host claimed Barack Obama had a “deep-seeded hatred of white people, or the white culture.”

I love this story! The only way to stop these Leftists from continuing their group defamation of the Tea Party movement is to vote with our wallets. This is just the beginning. NBC and Microsoft are next:

You see what lies can do to someone. He believed the lies about homophobia and racism and he took action. Poor fool. You deserve to be fired. The loons on the left think that just repeating these lies they will win in November. Sorry, it won’t work.

  • Munch

“Racism and homophobia are my Achilles heal….”

No, no, no- those are liberal talking points.

  • The Real Royal King

Well, so much for free speech.

What’s next? Are you going to blow up the Hauptbahnhof and seize the radio station?

  • Puter Boi

    Heck….even a caveman would know…..oh never mind….

  • http://www.anonymousfinch.com AnonymousFinch

    RRK:

This is not a “free speech” issue. No one is saying the government should censor Baxter. However, if you call me violent and retarded, I can boycott you. Boycotts are also constitutionally protected free expression. If you slander me, I don’t have to pay your salary. And I won’t.

  • Munch

Well, so much for free speech.”

King, it’s liberals who are against this type of speech unless——— It’s a liberal who is caught saying it.

    RKK:

Moreover, Baxter wasn’t trying to express his opinion in the public sphere. He placed a phone call in order to harass a group he didn’t like. This isn’t expression. It’s intimidation.

Duh! I think it is safe to assume everyone except Jeff and Snacker realize that, AF. It’s called irony, and it went right over your head, again. All the Marys in Heaven, you are a prickly dude!

Duh! Duh! I never thought of that.

Geez, AF, just because someone finds your political ideology narrow, stifling and wrong-headed doesn’t mean he’s ignorant. All the Marys in Heaven, I would have fired him in an instance for this stunt, whatever he said. I hope the same would be true for you.

Now, excuse me. I have to say something Jeff and Snacker can understand. Olbermann drinks gutter water.

  • MDT

    Who’s retarded now..?

I think HE’S trying to kill us with laughter.

    Next.

  • Olby Sucks

Uh oh, looks like the phony rk is doing some serious back pedalling. LOL!

  • Rogue-Comic

I haven’t seen so much back pedaling since the climax of Talladega Nights.

Hey, TRRK, when he used the word “retarded” he thought he had you on the line.

If someone finds someone else’s political ideology narrow, stifling and wrong-headed because s/he mistakenly buys into lies spread by the opposite side, that person is by definition “ignorant.”

Now, excuse me. I have to say something Jeff and Snacker can understand. Olbermann drinks gutter water.

Not true. According to the gossip, maybe his own bathwater. But not gutter water.

  • ChrisNH

LOL @ the ‘Big Deal TV-voiceover Guy’ getting pwned. What a limp-wrist: He leaves a voice message. Libs are totally apoplectic and in a rabid froth over the Tea Parties. They have no patience for ‘freedom-of-speech’ when it comes to people ‘not like them.’ Real inclusive and tolerant of our little ‘Media Hero’ here.. Wee-todd.

  • germ

As of 10 minutes ago my Insurance policy has been moved from Geico to USAA. Thanks loudmouth for saving me a ton of money!

  • http://lnsmitheeblog.blogspot.com LNSmithee

I just listened to the message on the Big Government site (another WIN for Andrew Breitbart!) and I gotta tell ya, he must do some amazing things in order to muster up his VO voice because his speaking voice is somewhat less than remarkable.

What’s serendipitous about this is that I was just hours ago enjoying a YouTube posting of the old GEICO spot with the caveman on an O’Reilly Factor-type show complaining about the caveman ads. It’s as hilarious now as it was then, and the guy playing the B’OR clone is perfect.

  • libra blue

I wonder if Anderson is going to get on 360 tonight and do his Olbermann impersonation again against Lance Baxter’s hate speech? Probably not. he is showing his shark dive again tonight.

@LNSmithee, ” I gotta tell ya, he must do some amazing things in order to muster up his VO voice because his speaking voice is somewhat less than remarkable.”

Boy is that an understatement! His real voice is at least an octave higher!

This was a “Fox News Alert” and Megyn’s “top story”? Whose water is she carrying?

Further evidence of why FNC succeeds in a game already played by so many others. How many other networks do you think will report this story? That makes FNC’s coverage of it unique and different than the rest… and that’s why their audience is growing. It’s not the same stuff as everyone else, it’s unique stuff that a large segment of the population are interested in, but that the rest of the media will undoubtedly ignore.

  • http://www.sailrabbits.com Magister

@ImNotBlue: I’m not saying that the story shouldn’t have been reported, but I find it hard to believe that the dismissal of an unknown voice-over actor was worthy of an “alert” or since it was the “top story”, it was the most important thing in the news at that moment.

  • Cecelia

    Confused, AF?

TRRK thinks you should have known that his default mode is disagreeing with Olbysucks no matter how germane that is to his true opinion on the topic.

You simply have the misfortune of caring about the matter at hand, rather than the personalities.

“GEICO Announcer Fired For Calling Tea Partiers ‘Retarded,’ Potential Murderers”

    ROTFLMFAO – ROTFLMFAO – ROTFLMFAO – ROTFLMFAO – ROTFLMFAO – ROTFLMFAO

I wish we could fire our elected officials who do the same.

Tea Party Members are just average Americans.

Not racists or radicals (like obama use to hang out with – Ayres, Wright, Marxist Professors, etc.)

We’ll, I’ll agree with you that FNC uses that “alert” sound and graphic too much… but as for “top story,” I’d have to know more. Was it the first thing in the show? How long did they talk about it? Etc. Was it the first thing in Megyn’s show, or was it the first thing at the top of the hour, or the bottom of the hour?

    It is interesting, though…

In case anyone would like to do something effective, contact legal organizations or individual lawyers and ask them:

    1. Is the voiceover guy’s claim about interference correct?

    2. Did FreedomWorks break the law by recording their phone conversation? In CA apparently you need both parties’ consent; do the laws of CA apply?

  • shootfromthehip

    Sweet.

Megyn Kelly just admitted “Freedom Works” is behind the Tea Parties. I’ve been trying to tell Tea Baggers for months that the movement is not “grass roots.”

Now I can just point them to this clip.

    Thanks, Fox!

    @ImNotBlue: I’m just going by the first sentence out of Ms Kelly’s mouth;

PS) Which also implies that it got more than the four minutes in the clip.

He left a voice mail… I’m pretty sure he knew he was being recorded.

    She Did?

It sounded to me like she said something along the lines of “that’s the Tea Party uh a Tea Party group” which itself is not accurate.

Freedom Works is an organization that was founded in 1984, has merged over the years with others such as Empower America and self describes as:

    “About FreedomWorks: Our Mission

FreedomWorks combines the stature and experience of America’s greatest policy entrepreneurs with the grassroots power of hundreds of thousands of volunteer activists all over the Nation.

FreedomWorks, led by former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey, has an unrivalled ability to reach opinion leaders and elected officials with innovative policy ideas and effective strategies for change.

FreedomWorks drives policy change by training and mobilizing grassroots Americans to engage their fellow citizens and encourage their political representatives to act in defense of individual freedom and economic opportunity.”

Actually I don’t think you got what you thought in your gotcha. The two groups being affiliated or cooperative with each other sounds like a natural fit to me. Move along, nothing nefarious to see here!

ImNotBlue: thank you for helping me to show the intellectual level of the teapartiers.

    1. I spelled “interference” correctly. When using a word I used and spelling it incorrectly, please don’t put it into quotes.

    2. On his page, he claims that FW might have opened themselves up to a lawsuit for that interference. I suggest taking a look at this similar matter from a few years ago. A lawyer put a disreputable effigy on his house, and some people contacted his employer despite the fact that his employer had nothing to do with the effigy. He then threatened to sue; whether he did isn’t known. But, I do know that FW has deeper pockets than bloggers, so some enterprising lawyer might find this case something they’d be interested in, assuming it has merit.

    3. The issue with the voice mail is a separate matter. The recording I referred to was when they called him and AFAIK they didn’t inform him that he was being recorded. Not only is that disreputable, and not only is putting it online even more disreputable, but they might have broken the law. As it turns out, there was a 2006 case dealing with this issue: apparently when someone calls into CA, CA rules about informing someone they’re being recorded apply. That would seem to indicate that FW broke CA law.

P.S. My page about the tea parties has a lot of background information you won’t hear from anyone else.

ImNotBlue: thank you for helping me to show the intellectual level of the teapartiers.

An insult… always a good start, and sign of an advanced intellectual. Especially when it’s based upon an assumption… and an incorrect assumption at that.

    1. I spelled “interference” correctly. When using a word I used and spelling it incorrectly, please don’t put it into quotes.

Really? Wow. An entire line dedicated to a typo. Who knew an extra “a” could work you into such a tizzy.

I guess I’ll have to take extra care with my spell check this time. Or you could get over yourself. You know, whichever comes first.

    2. On his page…

Ooooh… so that’s where you got the information. Perhaps you should have made that more clear, being that the original story on THIS site did not include that information.

…he claims that FW might have opened themselves up to a lawsuit for that interference.

I think the would be different. I’m no lawyer, but I’d think Geico would have a pretty strong case saying that as a “celebrity with a recognizable voice,” leaving a message that subsequently went public would be a violation of a public presence clause. Remember when Dell got rid of the “Dude you’re getting a Dell,”-guy because he was arrested for smoking pot. I’d think they’d have a similar case.

Oh, see again… you didn’t let us know that was what you were talking about. On that issue, he may have a case… but I doubt he’d receive much from it… if anything at all.

So Mr. Baxter despises racism and homophobia. Good, now let him find a way to fight it instead of mislabeling everyone who fears our current fiscal policy. Just because a cable network that is notorious for being just as sensational in it’s left wing editorial policy as Fox News is in it’s right wing advocacy promoted the libelous name calling doesn’t mean that the public accepts it, and since Mr. Baxter’s job is to bring new customers to his clients, needlessly insulting them by falsely linking their attitudes on taxation and the role of government with their attitudes on race and sexual orientation, then adding more gratuitous slurs is dereliction of duty. You don’t bite the hands that feed the hand that feeds you then expect to keep on getting fed.
