“NO MOSQUE HERE!” Anti-Mosque Protest Shows Its Ugly, Racist Side

video

Let’s say up front that not everyone who opposes the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” (neither a mosque or at Ground Zero) is racist. There are many who disagree with the project on principled grounds. However, given the heated rhetoric surrounding the issue in recent weeks, it certainly stands to reason that an anti-Mosque protest would be the sort of gathering to which those with more…extreme…views might gravitate.

That was the case yesterday, at an anti-Mosque demonstration down in Lower Manhattan, when a black man walking through the crowd was the mistaken for a Muslim by the crowd — angrily.

The video, shot by amateur YouTube videographer “lefthandedart,” opens with chants of “No Mosque Here!” as it traces a black man wearing a white cap walking through the crowd. It’s not clear where he’s coming from or why the videographer had decided to film him, but the man seems to be trailed by a cameraman, a thin man who wanders behind him in a blue sweatshirt and what seems to be a woman hectoring him. He shoos her away angrily. There is a call of “coward!” “I’m not even Muslim!” he exclaims. Suddenly a big guy in a blue construction helmet is in his face. The chant of “No Mosque Here!” flares up again. The whole thing is very ugly and jarring.

“Wow, the crowd turned on him pretty fast,” says the videographer, who described it on YouTube like this:

A man walks through the crowd at the Ground Zero protest and is mistaken as a Muslim. The crowd turns on him and confronts him. The man in the blue hard hat calls him a coward and tries to fight him. The tall man who I think was one of the organizers tried to get between the two men.

So – was this guy one of the Mosque organizers? A secret terrorist? A secret Muslim? A non-secret Muslim? Nope, not according to the videographer: “Later I caught up with the man who’s name is Kenny. He is a Union carpenter who works at Ground Zero. We discussed what a scary moment that was for him. I told him that I hoped it did not ruin his day.”

Can’t see how that moment of angry group racism by an angry mob converging on him threateningly wouldn’t ruin his day! Incidentally, according to the Daily News, there were two separate demonstrations yesterday about the Mosque — one for and one against — that had nothing to do with each other. They were each held separately, two blocks from each other. Wait a second, one thing in Lower Manhattan can be two blocks from another thing and not have anything to do with each other? Insanity!

I must say that I’m shocked. NYC hardhats are usually so unfailingly polite and demure.

Yes. It seems “lefthandedart” is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. Best that we not think too much about it, lest we leap to unfounded conclusions. But damn, that guy is a racist for having words with a black man.

No, it’s indicative of xenophobia being fueled by various politicians and media outlets. Can we just all agree that the people in this video are crazy? There are legitimate reasons to either support or oppose Park51. Instead of screaming mindlessly at people that just might be awful Muslims, can we have a rational discussion?

Just happened to happen to dress like a muslim with the cap. Just happen to have somebody with a camera following him. Just happen to be going to work at WTC (on a Sunday?) And a carpenter with no tools? You never leave your tools at a worksite. Just happen to run into a guy with a blue helmet.

Protesters are generally idiots that spout talking points regardless of their political affiliation.

  • Call_Me_Ishmael

A black man, ambiguously dressed in garb that could be mistaken as Muslim garments, perhaps intentionally antagonized a peaceful coming together of anti-mosque Tea Party demonstrators. While demonstrators politely chanted “No mosque here”, the black man, for no apparent reason, walked from one end of the steet towards the corner and past the crowd. When confronted by a hard hat wearing demonstrator questioning his presence at the location, the man seemed combative and unsubmissive. The crowd surged around the man, protecting him with their placards and sign boards. After a brief confrontation, the black man was shooed away from the demonstration and disappeared meekly.

Demonstration organizers speculated that the man’s appearance was a planned provocation of the crowd by pro-mosque advocates, explaining that a black man in Muslim appearing garb could expect the response that the crowd gave and may have even wanted it.

Good point. I probably should not have used the word ‘clearly’ there. After watching the video, it is really unclear how this confrontation begins. Given where the video starts, we really have no idea if the man said anything or did anything that could have led to the conflict.

Making an assumption off of someone’s skin color is not necessarily racist. If it was, we’d all be racists because we make those assumptions all the time, frequently at an unconscious level. Read into the scientific literature regarding stereotyping and impression formation.

Frankly, I don’t think I need to be taking sensitivity advice or be lectured in regards to race relations from a person who used to have a picture of the President wearing an SS officer uniform as his avatar.

There are racists on both sides. Let’s not forget the king of the instigators Al “Tawana Brawley” Sharpton whose lies and racism were responsible for stirring up racial hatred not only in the Brawley case, but also in the Freddie’s Fashion Mart incident and in Crown Heights which resulted in the murder of a Jewish man. He is responsible for instigating racial hatred everywhere he goes. I won’t even get into Jesse “Himey Town” Jackson and those haters of of the U.S. Louis Farrakhan, Jeremiah Wright, Father Pfleger, and Michelle Obama, to name a few.

I am an independent voter so I don’t have a horse in this race, but I know a plant when I see one.

America is having its fascist fling. This whole thing is beginning to smell like Nazi Germany in the late 30’s except the people being scapegoated this time are Muslims not Jews. I am utterly amazed that the people being sucker punched, yet again, by Rupert Murdoch don’t understand the consequesnces of their actions. This is America which was built on religious tolerance and fair play. Imam Rauf is a Sufi Muslim not a Wahabbist, the fundamentalist crazies who run our favorite Islamist oil state, Saudi Arabia. Sufis are actively persecuted and killed in many Arab countries. Maureen Dowd had a quote from Scottish historian, Charles Mackay, which beautifully sums up the current moment, “Men, it has been well said, think in in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, one by one.” Virtually all Muslim Americans are law-abiding, tax paying citizens and are, obviously being hurt by their fellow citizens intolerance and prejudice. Hopefully, in a few weeks, this madness will be over. Let the healing begin.

And, if a large chunk of the terrorist’s plane lands on the roof of a building, that building is part of ground zero. The landing gear of one of the planes landed on the roof of the proposed mosque’s building. Again, I know this because I read it in the NYT.

Think for yourselves people and quit following the loudest dog whistle. All I hear on this subject is “Of course they have the Constitutional Right but”. There is no “but” when it comes to Constitutional rights. Either you do or don’t. If you’re gonna claim you’re for “Constitutional Rights” then you have to defend them. No matter how against the particular issue you are. If you don’t think they have that right then say so.

I find it FREAKING HILARIOUS that the left has finally found a religion it doesn’t hate. It has finally found a religion that it will openly defend. A religion that…stones people to death for being gay? Bwahahahahaha. Bwahahahahaahaha

It’s called defending the 1st amendment of our constitution. You defend someone’s right to worship even if you don’t agree with thier beliefs. Also, all Muslims do not practice Islam in the same way, just as all Christians don’t.

If you look to the left of the soapbox, someone has one of those gay rainbow flags. I wonder if he has a clue what would happen to him if he were openly gay in any muslim theocracy.

The EMT????? guy that spoke where was his name oh, it was covered why? Why didn’t he want to speak to camera? Why did he run from the camera guy Another prop?

Nice catch! I think what the person with the Rainbow Flag should have done was march over to the mosque and meet with the people in there up on the roof of the building and proclaim his support.

If we go by what this dude says, what happens to the man with the Rainbow flag ain’t going to be nice.

Another good little boy, doing what you’re told. If you repeat the lie enough times that people want to deny the poor little muslims their rights, it still won’t resonate, because just about everyone knows it’s not a rights issue. And if the progs are so concerned about that, can I expect to see them standing up for the working scabs’ rights next time a union picket line is crossed? Fat chance. You wanna suck up to muslims who’re openly mocking America, that’s up to you, but knock it off with the stupid lies. You didn’t care one way or the other, anyway, until some puppetmaster on some retarded left wing web site told you you should, then you willingly pop off with the bullshit lies, just like you’re told. It’s not a rights issue, and never was.

You should go out and find someone who says Muslims shouldn’t be allowed to worship, and get your defense on. You seem to be wasting your time here.

As if the tea-baggers aren’t embarrassing enough with Palin, Beck and their daily dose of stupid. Of course, we all know they are little more than ignorant bigots but now they are hell bent on sharing that with the world. Tea-baggers, we get it, you’ve proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are both stupid (duh) and racist (no shit) and an embarrassment to America.

I might suggest that we put roach bait throughout the city; they’ll be gone in a couple of days.

The latest Rasmussen poll shows 85% nationwide, following the mosque controversy.

The Republicans must keep this issue front-and-center until Congress returns, and then DEMAND Democrats publicly state their position on the mosque!

Who is a Republican capable of doing this?
    Are there any suggestions?

I agree, this will expose racists like yourself. I’d suggest you need to be marginalized but you’re doing a fine job of that all by yourself. Congrats dip-shit.

btw, this is a good teaching moment here:

Note what I posted above, then what Ted posted in response.

Who was the first to bring “RACE” into the discussion?

This is how Left-Wing Democrats have been Playing-the-Race-Card for the past 40 years; whenever there’s a topic they can’t address, they introduce the “Racism Smear” as a means to discredit opposing points-of-view. Then, the Professional Left Media dutifully spreads the Smear, as if it were gospel truth!

The good news is the Professional Left no longer controls the MEDIA, and Race-Baiting tactics like this are feeling a growing backlash from the general public!

This wasn’t racism, it was stupidity. How much more watered down can this word get?

  • Jelperman

Let’s say up front that not everyone who opposes the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” (neither a mosque or at Ground Zero) is racist.

Sure, there are quite a few learning challenged-types out there.

There are many who disagree with the project on principled grounds.

What principles? Hatred of brown people? Hatred of Muslims? A desire to join a baying mob of low-grade morons?

This incident where Blue Hat Fattie has to be restrained from attacking a man for having brown skin and a hat isn’t the only case of these racist imbeciles resorting to violence.

At one point, a portion of the crowd menacingly surrounded two Egyptian men who were speaking Arabic and were thought to be Muslims.

“Go home,” several shouted from the crowd.

    “Get out,” others shouted.

In fact, the two men – Joseph Nassralla and Karam El Masry – were not Muslims at all. They turned out to be Egyptian Coptic Christians who work for a California-based Christian satellite TV station called “The Way.” Both said they had come to protest the mosque.

“I’m a Christian,” Nassralla shouted to the crowd, his eyes bulging and beads of sweat rolling down his face.

But it was no use. The protesters had become so angry at what they thought were Muslims that New York City police officers had to rush in and pull Nassralla and El Masry to safety.

“I flew nine hours in an airplane to come here,” a frustrated Nassralla said afterward.

At least members of the KKK had the good taste to cover their faces with hoods when they held rallies to promote their hatred of dark-skinned people.

The comments posted in reaction to this video show why Republicans are the stupidest people on the planet. This video scared the crap out of me. I am a New Yorker and this is truly disgusting. A BLACK MAN, wearing a white cap, was HARASSED and threatened for NO REASON!! This mob was filled with RACIST fanatics who wanted to provoke a fight! Right wingers are a disease. If you “look Muslim” you need a weapon while walking around these tea party fanatics. Every single liberal website needs to promote this footage and show the true face of the tea party and these anti-muslim fanatics.

” Wait a second, one thing in Lower Manhattan can be two blocks from another thing and not have anything to do with each other? Insanity! ”

This seems to be the new argument from the proponents of the GZM. This and also “how far is far enough.” That Jon Stewart is so cleaver.

But it was Daisy Khan who went on Fox News and said a “divine hand” had led them to this place. She pointed out the fact that landing gear from one of the planes had hit the building they want to demolish and replace their interfaith community center/mosque. She also sited the proximity to Ground Zero. It was symbolic for her then what has changed?
