Obama To The Moon: Been There, Done That

I guess this is what happens when you come of age in the post-space travel era: going to the moon is just not that exciting! Here is part of President Obama’s speech today at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida announcing his new space exploration plan.

I understand that some believe that we should return to the surface of the moon first, as previously planned, but I just have to say pretty bluntly here, we’ve been there before! There’s a lot more of space to explore and a lot more to learn when we do.

I think that’s called telling it like it is. If nothing else, Obama has pretty much made clear since the get-go that he doesn’t have much patience for over-wrought nostalgia. Next stop Mars? Video below.

Fine, I guess we’ll just have Canadian scientists continue working on the plasma rockets then, and then continue with the Large Hadron Collider in hopes that it won’t break… again.

I agree. The moon has been done before and is not a destination. We need destinations to go to and aim for. If we set a goal for the moon, we only need to use decade olds technology. If we set a destination for Mars we will have to use technology of the future. I also believe that the shuttle program is outdated and am more than happy for the shuttle to be closing down, and letting the private sector handle the low orbit missions. If we aim for the moon, it will just be a distraction and push a Mars mission back even further down the road.
