Michael Sam, a University of Missouri defensive lineman and National Football League prospect, revealed on Sunday that he was gay. If drafted, Sam would become the first openly gay professional football player. The announcement prompted a surge of shows of support from his teammates and current NFL players.
Even President Barack Obama joined those offering their support on Monday. Taking to his twitter account, the president congratulated Sam on his courage.
Joining those offering messages of support for Sam on Monday. “Congratulations on leading the way,” Obama wrote. “That’s real sportsmanship.”
When former NBA star Jason Collins came out as openly gay in the spring of 2013, the White House announced that Obama had personally reached out to Collins to congratulate him. No word yet on whether the president has reached out personally to Sam.
