Sarah Palin: “We Gotta Stand With Our North Korean Allies”

audio

Sarah Palin‘s choosing sides in the conflict between North and South Korea–and picking Kim Jong Il?

Couldn’t be. But there she is on Glenn Beck‘s radio show saying just that: “This speaks to a bigger picture here that certainly scares me in terms of our national security policy. But obviously we’ve gotta stand with our North Korean allies.”

The host helpfully corrects her, “South Korean allies.”

The scrambled tongue moment–as that’s surely what Palin will say it was–does bring up a charge made in John Heilemann and Mark Halperin‘s book, Game Change, which portrays Palin as dangerously uninformed–a candidate for the vice presidency who didn’t understand that Korea was divided:

She knew nothing. She had to be taken through World War I, World War II, the Cold War, and Palin was not aware there was a difference between North and South Korea. She continued to insist that Iraq was behind 9/11; and when her son was being sent off to Iraq, she couldn’t describe who we were fighting.

Now, in fairness to Sarah Palin, she’s got a lot on her plate right now–a book tour, a reality show, and a daughter who landed in third place on Dancing with the Stars–so remembering arcane international details like which country has a lunatic dictator with nuclear weapons and which one has American troops can be difficult.

Maybe it’s time to make some notes on her palm?

Offourse she’s confused just like she thought Africa was a country and can see Russia from the horizon.

  • pakattak

    Ohhhh jeez.

What did we say before? Failin’ Palin?

But whatever. I honestly don’t give a rat’s behind about what this woman says or does. It is a non issue. Whether it was a slip of the tongue or she is simply that uninformed, people shouldn’t really care.

I mean, would anyone really care if Snooki made the same mistake?

  • Big Eddie

She misspoke . It’s not like she was saying ” corpseman ” in 2 different speeches , or talking about visiting 57 states . Really reaching today ,huh ?

How come more “journalists” aren’t sticking a microphone in Mitt Romney’s face ? Could it be that they are afraid he’ll give Obama a butt whipping ?

Fact: Where is the working links to proof of slip of tongue?

it’s easy enough to joke about it but this is truly sad.

You defend whatever she says, no matter how stupid she sounds.

At what point will she be too stupid of a candidate for you? If you say “never” you probably shouldn’t be voting.

i told you your actions are not normal. I mean you find it hard to play an MP3 file. This is funny, literal parody of some of you, and you sent your people (Tea Party/Republicans) to the house. Some of the people going to congress cant read (Bloomberg).

  • Jackyboy

She misspoke, it happens all the time, this is a slip up that can be easily made. I wont grill her on this, it’s way too petty.

Fact: Mark Joyella writes article on a Palin slip but now in fairness post working voice link.

  • bealzebubba

The real question is if Glenn had to submit questions to Sarah’s team before going on the air or does she trust the right wing mainstream enough to engage in improvised discussion?

  • skyfet

Now is it clear to you all why she would only stick to people like hannity/beck? She’ scared she would be asked tricky question like what Newspappers do you read? it’s too tricky! lol

  • JHC

So it seems to many here that the problem isn’t that Palin does not know much about anything including the difference between North and South Korea but that the problem is those that point it out. And Palin herself says basically the same, the problem is not that she does not have answers for journalists, the problem is that the journalists do not ask the right questions. What kind of citizen would consider this person a viable candidate for anything?

I remember Gerald Ford making a similar mistake but in a debate against Jimmy carter. Ford got eastern mixed-up Europe mixed up with Western Europe and looked like a fool because it occurred in a debate. Did Ford know the difference between the two? Yes. Does Sarah Plain know the difference? Yes. Verbal mistakes like this occur to every candidate but with Palin shes then accused of being stupid.

My biggest concerns about her are the #1) she jumped on a bandwagon that was supposed to be about federal finances and overnight it turned into god and guns and the like. #2) While i’ve got ZERO problem with religion, I’m not about to allow anyone to tell me what faith to follow and to what extend I wish to do so. My concern with her in relation to that is that she would push ideals bordering on theocracy. This is good news for the Repubs in two ways.

Firstly she shouldn’t be the presidential candidate for the Republicans as she is not electable. This reduces her chances of being considered. Having another candidate bolsters the Republican’s chances.

Secondly it reiterates what electing someone who is inexperienced will get you. President OBee had virtually no experience in international matters before being elected and we are now seeing what happens when other countries like Russia and China smell someone in over their head.

Sara Palin(B. Obama) just fed into all the suspicions (correct predictions) of her (his) critics.

She(he) has no one to thank(blame) but herself (Bush).

If she (he) wasn’t so stubborn (arrogant) and so cocksure , she’d (he’d) be using her (his) time learning about policy(spending), politics (debt), and history(dividing the nation in groups based on race and class) and she’d (he’d) be versed enough to think before she(he) speaks(uses the teleprompter).

Instead, she’s(he’s) twittering and doing a reality show (The Daily Show, The Tonight Show, The View, Mythbusters, ESPN giving tournament picks).

Fixed. You can thank me later.

To show how asinine Joyella (and the rest of the lefty blogosphere) are about this, let’s just go back to her public comments about North Korean Missile Testing on April 6th 2009. I guess the lefty loons here seem to think she somehow forgot about North Korea in the interim. How immature… Here’s a snippet from the text:

(CNN) – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s office reacted Monday to North Korea’s missile test with a statement that “reaffirmed Alaska’s commitment to protecting America from rogue nation missile attacks.”

Palin herself criticized proposed Obama administration cuts proposed to missile defense programs. “I am deeply concerned with North Korea’s development and testing program which has clear potential of impacting Alaska, a sovereign state of the United States, with a potentially nuclear armed warhead,” she said in the statement. “I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that we continue to develop and perfect the global missile defense network. Alaska’s strategic location and the system in place here have proven invaluable in defending the nation….

  • jacobjakeu

I’m not convinced she’s well-qualified to be president, but this is really unfair… This is clearly a slip of the tongue, given in the previous sentences she was identifying appropriately North Korea as the enemy in this situation. It’d be different if throughout the discussion she thought North Korea was our ally.

She didn’t…. there’s no story here, and the headline on Mediaite for a clear slip-of-the-tongue as opposed to a misunderstanding or misassumption, juxtaposed with a picture of her making a speech (as if she said this before an audience, which would be even more embarrassing), is unusually and disappointingly UNFAIR on the part of Mediaite, which usually seems pretty fair.

The problem isn’t with her misspeaking, anyone can do that. The problem is the depth and extent of her ignorance on virtually every major issue:

From the posted story about Palin:

“She knew nothing. She had to be taken through World War I, World War II, the Cold War, and Palin was not aware there was a difference between North and South Korea. She continued to insist that Iraq was behind 9/11; and when her son was being sent off to Iraq, she couldn’t describe who we were fighting.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Cernea/3216050 Paul Cernea

It could be that this is just a slip of the tongue, which I doubt–since we’ve seen time and again how ignorant Sarah Palin is. But let’s suppose it is. Slips of the tongue are often made because a person doesn’t care enough about the subject at hand. Evidently Sarah Palin doesn’t care about a powder keg that’s gripping international headlines. She aspires to the most powerful office in the world, but doesn’t understand or care about elementary geography–the fact that Africa is a continent. How is she going to conduct international diplomacy? Or is America really so powerful that it doesn’t need to take other countries into account. Henry Kissinger wouldn’t think so; he wrote a book on Diplomacy.

Obama makes slips of the tongue too. “57 states.” Who cares? Even if someone thinks there are 57 states as opposed to 50, it could hardly change their overall policy. The “Muslim faith” slip of the tongue doesn’t imply he’s a Muslim. He was asked about how people thought he had a Muslim faith, and he was referring to that.

What it does show is that he’s not fanatical about his Christianity like Sarah Palin, who mentions it practically every time she talks, since she has nothing else to talk about. Why do so many people in this country equate religious fanaticism with patriotism? None of the founding fathers were deeply religious. In fact they tried to ensure that religion doesn’t get in the way of sensible government; that’s why they had separation of church and state. One of the best French rulers was Cardinal Richelieu (who ruled France through the King) precisely because he cared more about France than about the Pope. If things worked the way they should in this country, politicians would be penalized for trumpeting how religious they are. Instead they talk about it all the time!

I don’t like Palin and I’m an Obama supporter, but this seems a little ridiculous. Politicians misspeak, it happens, move on. Not to get on a high horse, but THIS is the problem with the media in general; instead of debating policy and substantive issues we’re trying to find the quickest, most compact soundbite.

The comments on the story though illustrate two interesting points:
    1) The hypocrisy of gaffes. There’s a difference between criticizing someone for misspeaking the way Palin did and for flat-out lying. It doesn’t matter that she misspoke here, but her outright lie about death panels is worth criticizing. Of course, Palin supporters on here say, “who cares that she made gaffes, they’re fine! But Obama said there were 57 states and is a Muslim!” Well, he’d been to 47 of the 48 continental United States and misspoke because of campaign fatigue, it happens the same as it happened to Palin. Same with the “Muslim faith” comment. Style issues should be covered more less than substance issues.

    2) Palin might win the Republican nomination, but she’ll never win the Presidency. She will have the support of the hardest core Republicans, but she will enthuse Democrats and her partisan rhetoric turns off independent voters. And she seems to be the Republican candidate because of how she bothers liberals more than because she’s qualified or electable.

The gaff isn’t the troublesome thing for me. What bothers me is that Palin takes the lack of faith in Pres. Obama that has been cultivated by Conservatives, and presents that insecurity as the real problem. She immediately touches on that pre-programmed insecurity among her audience in order to garner the desired response to her statements.

This cultivated anxiety actually does exist among her supporters. It is the only real thing she has at the ready in order to weigh in on this situation, since there had been no official announcements and Palin isn’t privy to state department issues. So she damns Pres. Obama simply based on the image that she has created of him, not on what he has actually done in this situation.

Taking unscreened questions from Republican House reps, he ab libbed for almost a hour. It was such an embarrassing mismatch that the next day the GOP claimed that they had been set-up and ambushed. Fox News cut the feed after about 15 minutes.

This is not the first time she’s make a huge mistake of this sort. Previously, her tongue slipped when she identified Iran as the county we’ve been warring in, not Iraq… in spite of the fact her tire-slashing, brake-cutting son served a year there.

I’ve been asking anti-Palin people this for years now, but I still haven’t gotten an answer.

Just because sensible people find her unelectable doesn’t mean the idiot masses won’t. Remember, these are the same people that think Iraq had something to do with 9/11 despite repeatedly being shown evidence that there was no connection. And I disagree with plenty that Obama has done, and I think he would have been a much better president if he had more executive experience before taking office, but you have to be really living in denial if you think that Palin and Obama are in the same area code in terms of intellect and ability. Keep in mind that it was her own hard core GOP handlers who were stunned by the fact that she had a very limited grip on US History, World History, how the US government works, etc. You can cling to a few Obama Gaffes, or even make some affirmative action claim, but Obama didn’t just make it to Harvard Law school, he was elected to Law Review by peers, which puts him at the top.

Nobody wants someone “just like us regular conservative folks” flying the airliner, you want Sully Sulinberger. Obama may not be Sully, but in spite of all the propaganda, he’s qualified. Writer, I agree that there is some relevance to the fact that Dubya went to Harvard. He isn’t a complete moron, but was staggeringly uninterested in learning and amazingly incurious during school and throughout his career. After a weak academic career at Yale, his grades were not strong enough to get into The University of Texas Law School, but somehow he managed to end up in Harvard. He was remember there as being a very lazy and entitled student who sat at the back of the class. Again, he’s not scary ignorant like Palin, but without a very strong push from his connected dad and grand dad, this is a guy who would have gone to North Texas, gotten middling grades and ended up in middle management. Obama isn’t my favorite, but he distinguished himself on his own.

Intelligence all depends on which side you’re looking at it from. Bush’s GPA was higher than Al Gore’s, yet during the campaign, the left also ignored that and still labeled Bush as the dumbass. So if the GPA doesn’t matter, and the school doesn’t matter, then it basically boils down to whether or not you agree with the man’s politics as to how you judge his ‘intelligence’. People tend to view those who agree with them as smarter than those who disagree. Human nature.

I guess you have redefined Assnine to mean “backed up and supported by facts.” Bush was reported by many aides and biographers are dismissive of research presented to him, and often he would want 10 page condensed briefs boiled down to a paragraph so that he didn’t have to wade through much detail. While Governor of Texas, he declined to read full cases for sparing particular death row prisoners from execution, preferring instead to have Alberto Gonzales simplify the reasons to execute the man. This was when a human life was in his hands.

I don’t know if “anti-Palin people” have simply not given you an answer, or have not heard you. Whatever the case. Here is my take on Sarah Palin’s “stupidity”.

I AM anti-Palin not because she is “so stupid and so unpopular and (i believe) unelectable, but because I believe she is quite intelligent, popular and electable to her political followers. She is as evidence proves itself to me, very arrogant and closed minded and doesn’t “want” to open herself up to World Politics. It is the intelligence, the popularity, and the electability that scare the living (intestinal waste) out of me. For instance, if she were president and “standing with our allies the north koreans” what would be the consequences of THAT slip of the tongue. What about the little cat-fights her daughters had with another facebook user concerning (OMG) gay marriage? Can We really really afford to have this kind of behavior in the Whitehouse? How long would this country last? I anticipate alot of “flaming” I really do not care. All I can say is: God Bless and Keep the USA. Thanks for the time.

Let me say I’d never vote for Sarah Palin…that being said, at the beginning of the clip she is talking about putting sanctions on North Korea. She could have said similar things in the minutes before this clip here starts. And then, right after spending time talking about/saying the phrase “North Korea”, she switches to talking about South Korea and calls it North Korea. Is it really that hard to believe that maybe after talking about North Korea she accidentally said NK instead of SK? Everyone in the world has done something similar before. This is just stupid nitpicking, there are about 13,304,203,403 other things we could talk about that actually has substance as to why Sarah Palin shouldn’t become the next president.

If you follow the links to the source, you’ll find that this comes from an interview with a guy in the McCain campaign (and co-author of the book Game Change), who said that someone else in the campaign told him that, when Palin was selected for the ticket, she had to be taught a lot about foreign affairs. But the interviewee also said that they had anticipated that would be the case with anyone they selected. He also said that Palin was a quick study, and that they were very pleased with the results. But, of course, the left-wing bloggers cherry-pick the quote to make their point.

Couple that with the fact that this incident clearly was a gaffe. I’m not a fan of Palin, but all this intellectual dishonesty is disheartening.

  • dogmet

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/57states.asp

There’s two sides to every story, people. And the 57 state one is no exception. It may even have been two thoughts in one (fifty … seven ?) .Whatever. It does not matter – fact of life is when speaking in front of crowds or even not, you’re going to make mistakes at times and/or say silly/stupid/whatever else things. No one is perfect and the fact people are even debating that is absolutely pathetic, especially for such a “smart” and “great” country (which I’m often sad to admit I’m from for these types of reasons).

The real idiots (and I mean completely so!) are those who don’t see that or compare Obama to this likening him to such a thing (or even Bush who I can’t stand and when I refer to him below it’s an example of many others who have said or done seriously bad things).

Ok, it’s sad that Palin said NK is the US’s ally. It’s also funny. But it also doesn’t say too much either. There’s been far worse quotes from people in this country (look at the huge amount of Bush quotes). There’s been far worse people i this country in general, I’d say (not even thinking of recent years, in fact – I can think of many decades ago that were bad). While on that note, to the person who said it’s more hilarious [whatever] because of her accusing people of being communists (if that’s so – sadly a lot don’t even know the difference between socialism and communism). Well, hell, even Walt Disney did that – and if I recall it was even video taped! (and if you want to blame anyone – then blame McCarthy for that one as he was the one who started and caused much trouble in that [his] era).

Hell, I had a teacher in college teaching a very basic thing that was very wrong (networking, computers) and he had been teaching this for over 10 years and he was sure his teacher was right too. That is, until I told him he was very wrong and eventually people realized I was right and he then amended what he said. At least he admitted it (even if he resented what I did).

There’s a big difference between stupidity and ignorance, in other words.

On top of that, there’s no such thing as a stupid question – only stupid answers. If you don’t ask you’ll never learn and it could be an easy or common question even. What really matters is admitting to your mistakes, faults (including ignorance) and correcting them for the future. And its the ones who don’t see this who are the fools.

So go ahead and insult Obama or even Palin (who I can’t stand and think is a very dangerous person) – but it accomplishes nothing, and it proves nothing by insulting people – except that YOU, the insulter, is a low life of course.

This post is obviously not directed at every comment, but those who are directly attacking or associating someone with stupidity or the like.

Sure everyone suffers from a verbal gaffe every now and then, fine, but I believe that we all saw the real Palin back in ’08 during the Katie Couric interview. She still defends her “foreign policy experience” because her state borders Canada and is in close proximity to Russia and foreign planes land in her state, yet with all her foreign policy experience she never bothered to get a passport until sometime in 2007. I doubt she had visited any of these countries before her run. She lost what little respect I did have for her as a politician when she quit her job as governor. If she quits an elected office like that whose to say she won’t walk away from another. I say we give her what she recently said on the trailer for her reality show….“I’d rather be out here than in some stuffy Washington office.”

  • disenlightened

Listen to the whole thing. She talks about the need for sanctions on NORTH KOREA. Last I checked, America doesn’t ask for sanctions against our allies. At least we didn’t, until this incompetent self absorded neophyte who (unlike Palin) didn’t know whose side we were on in the Georgia-Russia fiasco, became President.

  • bullwinkle

From The Weekly Standard – enough said…

On Glenn Beck’s show earlier today, Sarah Palin accidentally said North Korea when she meant South Korea:

CO-HOST: How would you handle a situation like the one that just developed in North Korea? [...]

PALIN: But obviously, we’ve got to stand with our North Korean allies. We’re bound to by treaty –

    CO-HOST: South Korean.

PALIN: Eh, Yeah. And we’re also bound by prudence to stand with our South Korean allies, yes.

Some of Palin’s usual antagonists are going nuts over this slip of the tongue, but they don’t point out that she correctly identified North Korea as our enemy literally 8 seconds before the mix-up: “We’re not having a lot of faith the White House is going to come out with a strong enough policy to sanction what it is that North Korea is going to do.”

The fact that Sarah Palin is an idiot and an embarrassment to a great country is not in any way mitigated by an argument that claims that Obama is ALSO stupid. From what I can tell the best argument anyone can come up with in Palin’s defense is that she’s not the only retard trying to formulate American foreign policy.

    C) To disenlightened – If you left the four walls of your tiny world you’d realize that there are powerful, strong, and wonderful countries outside the American border. I’m sure she’s working hard and she’s tired but priorities should probably enter into it at some point. If she wants to do television, be in the celebrity spotlight, be recognized by millions, more power to her Another run at being the leader of a nation? On what platform? “I was a great governor…but I quit that; I can shoot a beart, I wrote a book’, have a TV show, I can shoot a coyote; I’m pretty sure I have some vague understanding of geography…and I can shoot a moose!” If one wants to be considered as a leader of a nation, one should probably concentrate on credibility and NOT on looking like a neurotic self-important attention seeker…at least until after the election.

The US Constitution, The first 10 Amendments / The Bill of Rights, Freedom of Speech, the Press, Religion, and so on..
This is why The Liberal Socialist Marxists, are so desperate to destroy Gov. Sarah Palin, as she represents all that America was Founded on, all that America stands for, and all that is Good and Decent in America, which is Family, Tradition, Faith, Country and Flag, and the American Dream. These things, which every Liberal in America despises and laothes, is represented by Gov. Sarah Palin.. They believe that if they can target her, and destroy her, as the true representative of America, then they can ultimately defeat and destroy America itself. Not if we, the American patriotic People, can help it, as it will done over our dead bodies, and nothing less.!!!! This Nation wasn’t built on weak@ss Liberal selfishness and intolerance and stupidity.. It was built on the American Independent Fighting Spirit, and never give in attitude of the American Pioneer, as in Sarah Palin, the True American Trailblazer of Constitutional Conservative Women in American Politics today.
Great people throughout History, were considered Great after their accomplishments were known, and not before..
Gov. Sarah Palin is a True Do it Yourself, Strong, Self-Made, Self-Reliant, Independent, “Andrew Jacksonian” / “Ronald Reagan”, Constitutional Conservative Patriotic American.
Gov. Sarah Palin’s Tenacity, Intestinal Fortitude, Strength, Fighting Spirit, Political Insight, and most especially her Faith, has not only allowed her to survive the far left Liberal media’s onslaught, and their campaign to personally destroy her and her Family, which is unprecedented in US History, because they fear her with a passion, as they know she has the charisma, charm, and Political ammunition, to completely destroy the Liberal Democrats, and particularly Obama, their only ace in the hole, from power. Like the making of steel, Gov Palin, has gone through the far left liberal media’s furnace of fire, and has grown even stronger and tougher, and has emerged as the undisputed and undeniable major Political Force in American Politics, today, tomorrow, and especially on 6 Nov., 2012.
Unlike Obama, who had anointed himself as a Great Leader and even a Deity, even before he ever accomplished anything in his life, let alone afterwards, which so far, everything he has done, and or tried to do, has been, and is, all bad and disastrous, to say the least.. He will go down in US History, as the absolute worst American President ever, along side such infamous Presidents like Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Woodrow Wilson, Herbert Hoover, and Andrew Johnson..

That her ideas possess currency is undeniable. In fact, just now there is a burst of energy behind her ideas. Which is interesting, because her ideas are rather plain; in fact, they are wholly lacking in anything remarkable at all. They are deficient in the irony people usually crave. These are quaint, bland, “up is up and down is down” ideas. If she were to announce a run for the Presidency, it would probably be along these lines:

    1. The Government should fear the citizens, not the other way around.
    2. If you want the economy to be stronger, do not fight the people who produce our nation’s wealth. Help them.
    3. If your plan will not get us the results we need, with all due respect I could care less how smart you are.
    4. If we have seen this scheme put into action before, and have yet to see it succeed; then let us shelve it until someone makes it work.
    5. Make it inexpensive to put people on a payroll, or to keep them on it. Then, maybe businesses will make cuts somewhere else during the lean times…and perhaps hire some more. We are not beating this any other way.
    6. Every move we make on foreign policy should send a signal to our allies that they made the right choice defending us; or, to our enemies that they made the wrong choice and need to reverse course. Those who are undecided about us, but watching, should be motivated in a powerful way to decide in our favor.
    7. Anyone who does something you might not be ready, willing or able to do yourself – regardless of what they pull down for an hour on the job before overtime – is deserving of your respect.

How many times has the elected messiah and his dimwitted sidekick Joe Biden said things that were at least if not more ignorant than this? Remember the dead soldiers that Obama saw on Memorial Day? Or the 57 states that he went to during the 208 campaign? What about Joe Biden asking a wheelchair bound man to stand up?

    Palin..WHAT A JOKE!!

If you listen to her response to the North Korean question is basically gives a simple “talk speak” answer. Something that I had heard from experts on NBC Nightly News. “We must stand by our south Korean allies and put more pressure on China ” etc. Damn..even I knew that. Ask her HOW she would put pressure on China and HOW and WHAT she would say to both South and North Korea (Yes Sarah there are 2 Koreas) with detail descriptions of her plan…..I bet you would get a “Deer in the headlights” look from her and NOTHING but uh..uh!

Ok all you progressives out there jumping all over Palin about her ignorance: IT IS JUST THIS TYPE OF COMMENTARY THAT WILL MAKE HER PRESIDENT!!!!! Didn’t you learn anything from G W Bush’s two term presidency? When you attack Sara Palin for her ignorancy, you are just making her that much stronger. After all, she is running on the ‘I’m just plain folk like you’ platform like Mr. Bush did. So when you attack her for making mistakes, or mispeaking, you are attacking all those who buy into that drivel, and proving the point that liberuls are pointy headed, nasty people that like to attack nice, homey, god-fearing folk.

So I implore you, just stop. The best way to fight her is to ignore her. Let her preach to her choir. If she does mount the podium to run for president, counter her drivel with critisism of her policy while serving her 1/2 term govenor of Alaska.

Scandal: Palin Mixes Up Koreas 8 Seconds After She Gets It Right

Palin shouldn’t be sheltered from tough yet fair criticism. But her critics don’t help themselves when their attacks are based on falsehoods or don’t tell the full story.

Regardless of party when a politician makes a verbal snafu, the media uses it to show weakness. Ford never lived down his Western Bloc error, Jimmy Carter still lives with his lust in his heart, Bill Clinton and his definition of “is”, and now Palin with the North Korean ally gaffe. Those trying to say the media is picking on her is wrong, because as we can tell from this comment trail, the 57 states comment by Obama is still “news.”

I am no supporter of Ms. Palin, I want her to go away and curse McCain everyday for bringing her out from her igloo. She talks a good talk to her cronies on the right, but fails to reveal her “tried and true methods of free market forces” of running a business, a city or a state, which is the most illogical statement I have ever heard. Don’t think she understands that tax breaks/cuts for businesses are a form of socialism and not really free market forces.

  • Bunny

There are plenty of legitimate gripes and criticisms to have about her, but this isn’t one of them. It’s clear from the other remarks, in context, that she knows the North is the bad guy, not our ally.

Apparently. Tracing Palin’s carreer just shows that you can be politicall successful without exhibiting any actual intellect (but we already knew that). She’s popular because she has a very carefully developed image as the all-American soccer mom.

‘”She’s a hockey mom, she lives on a lake, she ice fishes, she snowmobiles, she hunts, she’s an NRA member, she has a float plane, and her husband works for BP on the North Slope,’ Fagan says. Todd Palin, her high school sweetheart, is a three-time winner of the 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race from Wasilla to Nome to Fairbanks. It’s the world’s longest snowmobile race.”

Well, hot damn, lets make her president.

You are missing my point. Firstly, there is a difference between being politically savvy (capable of projecting an image that people will vote for) and politically competent. Secondly, it should be a moot point that being married to your high school sweetheart (who wins snowmobile races) does not really qualify someone to be governor.

  • jpwhipple

Weird… I am no fan of Palin but jumping on her for an obvious slip of the tongue really brings out how much modern journalism is failing us. People who already think Palin is stupid jump up and yell, “SEE! I told you so!” Fact is no more evidence is needed than her books full of terrible and ignorant ideas or that awful showing in her Couric interview. She’s a dolt. No need to chase her around looking for another soundbite to prove it. Sooner or later she will say something genuinely stupid and MEAN it.

Again, yes, her public image reps (not her) do a good job of making her appeal to conservative Americans who want to vote for a leader based on what they claim to represent rather than concrete and viable policies. As for the rest of the article, I wasn’t particularly convinced. For one thing, the article is about why she is popular, not whether she is good at her job. For another, being a whistleblower is good, but calling out everyone else’s BS doesn’t make yours stink less. I have yet to come across a positive review of Palin that has a balanced and frank analysis of her policies and doesn’t just rely on her 1 dimensional image as a politician.

Do I seriously even have to comment on the absurdity of measuring a politician by an obsolete approval raiting? It is very easy to make someone look good by ignoring their flaws, just as you can make someone look bad by ignoring their achievements. In the case of Palin, her supporters refuse to acknowledge her faults (i.e. she is oblivious to any affairs outside of her home state, can barely grasp international politics, is incapable of forming a coherent sentence… you know, the little things). She also claims legitimacy for office based on the wrong criteria… I expect more from a politician than appealing one-liners and the projection of a christian home life. This debate is getting circular, I’m going to go do something better with my time.

Good grief. She misspoke. Clearly, she had just said that she doesn’t have faith that the White House is going to be tough enough on North Korea.

PAT: Sarah, you said in the last few days that you are considering a run for president.

    SARAH PALIN: Yes.

PAT: And polls show that you would probably win the Republican nomination. How would you handle a situation like just developed in North Korea?

SARAH PALIN: Well, North Korea, this is stemming from I think a greater problem when we’re all sitting around asking, “Oh, no, what are we going to do” and we’re not having a lot of faith that the White House is going to come out with a strong enough policy to sanction what it is that North Korea’s going to do. So this speaks to a bigger picture here that certainly scares me in terms of our national security policies. But obviously got to stand with our North Korean allies. We’re bound to by treaty. We’re also bound to by ‑‑

    STU: South Korea.

SARAH PALIN: Yeah. And we’re also bound by prudence to stand with our South Korean allies, yes. And, you know, to remind North Korea, well, we’re not going to reward bad behavior and we’re not going to walk away and we do need to press China to do more to increase pressure on that arena.

Do you ever get dizzy from spinning? If they loved her so much, why were they so happy when she resigned? Nothing to do with having seen her in much more detail and not liking the view? Also, you’ll find that most Alaskan governors are pretty popular with their small constituency: they each receive a check from the state each year from revenue from the pipeline. Even that wasn’t enough to keep her approval ratings afloat once she got in front of a camera and started talking.

But be my guest and start rationalizing those annoying facts away, too.

Fact: I had more recorded work history in my Social Security than Ozero did as the community organizer when I was 20 years old. More history than he did before getting a second chance at a public office in Illinois. First time he lost in the voting. The second time he had the other candidates thrown off the ballot so he had the only name up for the position. You guess it a winner. Palin ran the largest state in the USA. Why isn’t she qualified? She would kick your ass in an election! 2010 was a mandate for Sarah Palin supported politics.

She ran the 48 largest state in terms of population. Land mass doesn’t usually equal complexity.

And 2010 saw more Palin backed candidates lose than win. But her involvement was really beside the point: you can peg the mid-term seats lost by the president’s party directly to the economy almost every time. This was worst loss of seats and worst economy since Hoover in the 1930 mid-terms. Palin didn’t factor into the outcome for good or bad.

Also, you’ll find that most Alaskan governors are pretty popular with their small constituency:

Frank Murkowski would find that “fact” interesting. You’d think that with all that popularity, there would be more than one Alaskan Governor who’s served two terms in the last 3 decades.

Oh, my. Sarah has a Thanksgiving message:

My fellow Americans in all 57 states, the time has changed for come. With our country founded more than 20 centuries ago, we have much to celebrate – from the FBI’s 100 days to the reforms that bring greater inefficiencies to our health care system. We know that countries like Europe are willing to stand with us in our fight to halt the rise of privacy, and Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s. And let’s face it, everybody knows that it makes no sense that you send a kid to the emergency room for a treatable illness like asthma and they end up taking up a hospital bed. It costs, when, if you, they just gave, you gave them treatment early, and they got some treatment, and ah, a breathalyzer, or an inhalator. I mean, not a breathalyzer, ah, I don’t know what the term is in Austrian for that…

I am a conservative. If I was idiot enough to call myself a Reagan republican I probably would; but I’m not. Truth is I think if ol’ Ronnie were running the White House right now he’d do it in a much different way then he did in ’80-’88. Moreover I think he would be altogether appalled by being effectively deified by right-wingers with such terms as “Reagan Republican”. Not many people know he started his political career as a democrat.

But I digress. As a conservative I am disgusted by Sarah Palin; unfortunately this verbal gaffe is just more fuel for my inner rage at Sarah Palin’s ready acceptance by the GOP. Someone above called her a Reality Show mom, and that’s exactly what she is, like Momma Kardashian with a hunter orange vest and a shotgun instead of a little black dress and a martini. Seriously, did anybody forget that she quit her little gig as governor of Alaska. Whoever heard of a public figure of any stature quitting their job? Well, ok, i guess if she went to work for the Red Cross or something, then…… NO! She went to work at Fox News and to make a reality show about her family. I mean a freaking reality show! How conservative is it to have your own reality show? I think Ronald Reagan would share my displeasure for his party’s embrace of such a person as Sarah Palin. I think he would look forward with pleasure to stomping her in a primary debate.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dez-Crawford/1756705190 Dez Crawford

There ARE fifty-seven US states and territories. 51 states (yes, DC is technically a state) and 6 US territories –that does make 57 — and I do believe Obama at least made a pit stop in each of them during his campaign. Failure to add “and territories” during an exhausted speech is more than slightly different from not understanding which Korea is our ally, that Africa is not a country, and having to have World War One AND World War Two explained to you.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dez-Crawford/1756705190 Dez Crawford

Correction for clarification: should have said there are six fairly major territories — there are actually more territories, mostly small islands, uninhabited, and a few small, low-population islands in US territorial waters he did not visit on his campaign.

Are you really this silly? The President is a constitutional scholar with degrees from Columbia and Harvard, and is currently the President of the USA–do you REALLY, REALLY think this man does not know how many states we have? How utterly ridiculous!

Sarah Palin may or may not have misspoke, but it has already been established by her McCain handlers that she did not know North and South Korea were not one big happy family, nor that Africa was not a country, and she fell hook line and sinker for that prank call from the alleged leader of France despite it being blatantly obvious it was a joke (not even tipped off when he told her his wife was “so hot in bed” ). She’s just NOT BRIGHT. She found a shtick that works for her (repeating god, guns, faith, country ad nauseum) and appeals to the same ignoramuses that think Glenn Beck is really crying authentic tears on his show.

As for the “corpsman” thing—-has anyone added up how many times both Bus and Palin have said “new-cue-lar” weapons? As the president, one would think SURELY after a million advisors told him a jillion times that’s NOT how it’s pronounced, he could have mastered the correct pronunciation–but no. Better to appear an illiterate buffoon. Anyone can make a mistake once or twice–I’m willing to bet we all have words we mispronounce–but repeatedly for years and years with the best minds correcting and advising you, when the whole world is watching? Now that’s just stupid.

Yeah at Sarah Palin knew General McClellan (the guy was from the 1800s just so we know) was/is the General of the Afghanistan war during the 2008, one time Vice Presidential debate. If I remember correctly the debate wasn’t going to go on after the disastrous sit down interviews she had with Charles Gibson and Katie Couric. So um yeah keep laughing will you and do repeat yourself while beating the proverbial dead horse. Oh wait Africa is a country so that means Asia and South America are also countries. She didn’t know what the job of Vice President is and she actually claim that the Vice President is in charge of the United States Senate and can make a lot of good policy changes. Other than Rove vs Wade she could not come up with another Supreme Court decision she did not agree with. Or another Supreme Court ruling in general. She had John McCain sit next to her when Sarah had another interview with Katie Couric. But a REAL list goes on unlike your cheap one.

Sarah had to write and read off of her palm pilot if you want go the teleprompter route. I think she actually has a gift and palm reading.
