‘He’s Gonna Be Fine’: Trump Claims Kim Jong Un has 57 ‘Very Powerful’ Nukes as He Rebuffs Question About Writing Him Letters
With friends like these, who needs enemies?
President Donald Trump told reporters outside the White House on Wednesday that Kim Jong Un has 57 “very powerful” nuclear weapons, and he’s “gonna be fine” — as he skirted a question about whether he’s exchanging letters with the North Korean strongman.
As Trump took questions, one reporter asked, “Are you exchanging written letters with Kim Jong Un?”
“I can’t tell you that,” Trump replied.
While Trump avoided answering the question, he did exchange some 27 letters with Kim during his first term that he shared with Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward in 2019.
At the time, Trump told Woodward, “Don’t say I gave them to you.”
In a knock to his predecessors, Trump then went on to say that Kim has dozens of nuclear weapons, which he claimed never would have happened if he were commander in chief.
“But I get along with him. And you know what? The fact that I get along with him, that’s a good thing. Not a bad thing. He has 57 very powerful nuclear weapons. Should have never allowed it to happen. They should have never allowed it. If I were president, I wouldn’t have allowed it. But he’s got ’em. I get along with him very well. I can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon. And I know Kim Jong Un very well, and he’s gonna to be fine. As long as we have a smart president, he’s going to be fine. If we have a dumb president, then he’s probably not gonna be so fine.”
The reporter then asked if he plans to meet with Kim later this year, to which Trump answered, “Yeah, I will be.”
The exchange came days after Trump ordered Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to scale back military exercises near North Korea because Kim’s regime has been ”unthreatening and respectful” during his presidency.
