The Federal Aviation Administration has admitted that almost two months ago, a U.S. Airways plane nearly collided with an unmanned drone above Florida. The pilot told officials he came “dangerously close” to the drone, and the FAA will be looking into the matter.
One FAA official said that “the airline pilot said that he thought the [drone] was so close to his jet that he was sure he had collided with it,” and that “the risk for a small [drone] to be ingested into a passenger airline engine is very real.”
They do not know thus far who was piloting the drone, but it is being described as “similar to a model aircraft flown by hobbyists.” The drone did not have the kind of transponder aircrafts generally use to alert other planes in the area about their presence.
