Why Is Iran Building Mock-Up of a U.S. Aircraft Carrier?

American intelligence officials have learned that Iran is building a facsimile of a United States nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with the suspicion it “may be intended to be blown up for propaganda value,” according to The New York Times. This mock-up is currently under construction, but the Iranian Navy has taken “no steps” to hide the construction from Western satellites.

A Navy spokesman said they have reviewed satellite photos and have concluded “this is not a functioning aircraft carrier,” just a barge built to look like one. The assumption is that Iran would blow it up in the sea and film it “to make a propaganda point.”

The U.S. and Iran are currently in the middle of working on a deal for Iran to gut its nuclear weapons program.
