‘The President Just Isn’t That Into You’: Chris Coons Uses Trump Iran Threat to Mock Officials Left on Air Force One
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) poked fun at the Cabinet officials left behind on the endangered Air Force One last month while President Donald Trump was secretly ushered away to a waiting military flight amid threats from Iran.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Trump was snuck off Air Force One as he left the NATO Summit in Turkey in response to a “credible” threat of an Iranian assassination attempt.
Shortly after boarding Air Force One, Trump exited the plane and instead got into a catering truck. That truck then took him to an Air Force C-32A.
Several cabinet officials — as well as the White House press corps — were still aboard the first plane, prompting critics to accuse Trump of using them as decoys.
During a Thursday morning appearance on CNN, Coons suggested the cabinet officials left on Air Force One were no longer in Trump’s good graces.
“Well, my first question to those who are on the leave-behind decoy plane would be: do you realize the president just isn’t that into you?” Coons said. “So if you were Secretary [Marco] Rubio or Secretary [Scott] Bessent or [Stephen] Miller, how do they feel about having been left as decoys?
“More importantly and more seriously, the press who accompanied the president should not have been put on a plane where there was any serious risk of a shoulder-fired, surface-to-air missile taking that plane down. I understand putting a priority on the president’s security, but frankly, this was just a despicable incident of disrespect for the press and for members of his own cabinet. They should have been allowed to disembark and to fly home another way, rather than taking off on the number-one target in the whole region.”
Information about the alleged assassination threat came from Israeli intelligence. It was later reported that the CIA had “low confidence” in the information being legitimate. Administration officials, however, chose to take action and go through with the plane swap.
