Chris Matthews On Obama’s Leadership: ‘We Don’t Know What He Wants’

video

Chris Matthews contrasted President Obama’s dwindling poll numbers with the sudden invigoration of the Republican presidential campaign, and wondered why the president has not clearly laid out a plan for tackling the big economic issues like the national debt.

Howard Fineman said that while Obama has been generally popular among liberals and independents, many people in both groups are beginning to have doubts about their confidence in his effectiveness. The Washington Post‘s Nia-Malika Henderson emphasized the president, during his speech on the debt ceiling, telling the American people to call their members of Congress, and suggested that the tea party Republicans have “won by saying ‘no.’”

John Ignatius, also from the Washington Post, found Obama to be a “passive” leader who hasn’t given a clear idea of what he would do to improve the economy, which led Chris Matthews to pose the following hypothetical:

“If there was no Tea Party, what would the president want us to do? What would he want us to do in terms of debt reduction? What would he cut? Would he cut? What would he do to create jobs if there was no opposition? We don’t know what he wants.”

Obama is in deep trouble if he has Mr. Tingles questioning his leadership.

  • Johnjguy

He definitely needs get more active and soon about how he’s shaping his vision and also his ideas to boost the economy with job creation.

  • Anonymous

Actually, the public does know what Obama wants and it’s not good. I’m sorry that Chris is late to the party.

  • Anonymous

He doesn’t have any more ideas.

  • Anonymous

    1. He has no vision.

    2. He has no ideas to boost the economy with job creation.

Well Chris, it should now be painfully obvious he doesn’t have clue. If there was no tea party he would have spent another $10 trillion and he would be that much closer to his intended goal of crashing the U.S. economy and installing a complete socialist society ala Europe. He certainly didn’t expect the fight, he thought everyone would just lay down and look the other way.

I love it!   Dems coming to terms with the fact that they have put a man in office that is completely unequipped to fulfill his responsibilities to the Nation.  Chris Matthews coming to terms with the fact that that thrill he felt up and down his leg was in reality nothing more than he would have gotten had he been on a cheap date on the seemy side of NYC.

I still find it funny that Mr. Tingles rants are repeated here like they have substance or deep thought. When you can’t trust the network or the speaker on simple ‘facts’ and logic, and deception is their trademark, how can we take his opinion seriously? No credibility. His words are nothing more than background noise and propaganda for sheeple.

We still don’t even know who the hell he is for sure!!!

I’m sensing the biased liberal media is realizing that it was their fault for getting the least experienced and most incompetent person elected to the highest office when this Country could least afford to make such a disastrous mistake!!!!

Obama really wants to be white and powerful.

Since neither of these will ever come to pass, he’s decide that detroying everything white and powerful in America will make him feel better…..it won’t and we the ” real ” American people won’t have any part of it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WH3ZLMM7CUKUHUIMK4TKXW6SQE John

Obama wants a good wine with his meal.  He wants an occasional burger and fries.  He wants to play golf every week.  This governing stuff is for the birds.  You mean people actually want to see a plan for spending cuts and entitlement reform.  How about I just sit back and call you a terrorist for actually putting a plan on the table.  That sounds easy.  And it won’t interrupt my golf plans.

I know what he wants. A One World Government preceded by a dollar crash in Nov.-Dec. 2012 (following his re-election). Until then he’s going to play the role of the moderate, because that’s all he is, an actor.

When Obama was young he organized people to rail against the “Man”.  This required virtually no leadership – just telling people what they wanted to hear and getting them riled up enough to act.  Now he is the “Man” and his leadership involves trying to tell people what he thinks they want to hear so they will get riled up and act against the other “Man”.

  • Anonymous

Actually, we DO know what Obama wants, that’s the problem…. fortunately for the country, he is not too adept at the tactics for making it happen… speeches and appeals for people to contact their reps is not enough to be effective.  Carter was similarly clueless when it came to tactics.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FSPIVAFYI672OH5NOKVRTEZA4U MadCharles

Matthews shouldn’t be surprised he doesn’t know what Obama wants.  He never asked. Throughout the campaign none of the msm asked. Of course Obama told them but they didn’t dare report Obama’s intentions. Obama is doing exactly what he said he was going to do. Change America. He now boast he’s only half way through. How’s that Hope and Change Yes We Can working out for you ?

But Tingles… you mean — Obama is NOT an “American success story”??? GTFOH, man! Time for a new MSNBC (Obama Division) commercial.

    Gordon Ramsay’s ‘West Wing’ Nightmares

Barack Obama is the gentleman chef. And why not?  The Hope &
Change Cafe won a Michelin star back in 2009 and everyone wanted to eat
there.  The place had a stunning décor, an appealing menu, and, when the
executive chef cared to cook, some very fine meals.

After winning that Michelin star, though, Chef Obama didn’t want to get his talented fingers dirty …

Ignatius asks, “If there was no Tea Party, what would the president want us to do?”

What is the value of asking a hypothetical question like that?  There IS a Tea Party.  And they are automatically and fiercely opposed to absolutely anything and everything that Obama proposes.  Regardless of what it might be.  If Obama came out with a constitutional amendment mandating Christian evangelical prayer before every class in our public schools, the teanderthals would turn against it.  They wouldn’t want a socialist-marxist government telling them when to pray.

  • Anonymous

That really is awesome. Very funny, and full of truthiness. But since Ramsey can’t be POTUS, he’d make a fine Chief of Staff.

This reveals the difference between most liberal commentators and most conservative commentators. Liberals are more intellectually honest. Matthews is willing to publicly speak to his doubts about Obama, but virtually no one on the right is willing to speak up and say aloud what everyone knows about the GOP’s candidates: that they’re bat$hit crazy.

When someone from the right is willing to utter the truth, I’ll take them seriously.

  • Jayamerican1

They were actually kind of tough on Obama today”

Poor thing. They were not and will never be nearly as tough as they have been on Palin and Bachman. But that’s okay. These two women are strong enough to take it.

They reflected the disappointment of Democrats and the loss of confidence even among Obama’s true believers”

Believers in what? What did they believe in…a community organizer. A half term senator. Seems to me he has pretty much reached the same success as he has in the past.

They sounded as though they are coming to grips with reality in some of their dialoge”

    From the story:

Answer: BECAUSE THE MORON IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND HIS SYCOPHANTS WHO WORK FOR HIM DON’T HAVE A FUCKING CLUE ABOUT WHAT TO DO OTHER THAN BASH THE OPPOSITION.

Got that, Chrissy Tingles? Understand now? Obama is BANKRUPT intellectually and figuratively.

Now, if Chrissy Tingles could get some Leftist on his show who has an IQ higher than a mud pack to say that, MSNBC HQ would explode.

We on the right know what he wants, Matthews.

He wants to transform the country away from that which is recognizably American and towards a failed European socialist model.

We knew he’d be a failed leader, for he hid away in a college environment early in his career where he could teach and not do, relied on backroom connections and not proactive measures to elevate himself in society and politics and never in his life held an executive title or similar position of responsibility.  We knew he’d shirk from any responsibility that came his way, for he campaigned on empty rhetoric and not specifics, hiding from position for which he earlier stood, demonizing others along the way, sidestepping issues by throwing people under buses and relying generally on a friendly press to shelter him from criticism.  We knew he’d be an ineffectual political deal maker, for he stayed away from the business of government and above the fray of politics in order to maintain a state free from recorded positions, voting present most his career.  And, for all this, we knew he’d be a leftist ideologue, for he’d never repudiated questionable statements and associations and never showed a willingness or ability to moderate long held positions, even though time and experience had shown those positions to be demonstrably wrong.  He seeks now to move us towards European socialism even as it’s collapsing around the Europeans’ ears.

But perhaps we didn’t know he’d rule dictatorially through regulatory czars, or authorize assassination lists of American citizens.  That’s on us, maybe.

Where were you, Chris?  We knew these things, for we vetted him in your absence, so busy were you being a lapdog press spokesman.

  • Rock90210

Chris, Chris, Chris – of course you don’t know what ”he” wants – because he DOES NOT KNOW.  It’s the new Emperor’s clothes all over.  He is an unqualfied liberal elite lefty who knows nothing but getting money from labor, Soros and creating unproductive government run programs.  You don’t need to be brilliant to do that.  you are just told to do that.

I mean he doesn’t even know how old his own children are.

  • Rock90210

I frankly don’t understand why they aren’t lower.  Who’s voting for him?  Blacks are only 11%  of the population so who’s making up the other 29%?

  • Rock90210

Anybody who admits to voting for Obama is a traitor to the country.  And that goes for far right conservatives who say “if this doesn’ happen and that doesn’t happen then I’m staying at home”  That’s what happened last time and look at what we got.  Our only mission right now is to get this incompetant boob out of the White House.

Wow. Someone who is not afraid to play the race card.

Obama is still more popular than any other politician, and it isn’t because of his race. You cannot find another politician who has higher support nation wide. Sure, a generic Republican may do well, but there is no generic Republican. The closest to that is Romney (or Huntsman).

I checked the link. quote carried over from the Bush administration quote charges were dropped. If anything, that shows that Obama’s administration did not carry out an injustice that the Bush administration started.

Would you have had Obama and his administration drop every prosecution that the Bush administration started? Would that be “justice” to you, or would you cry TREASON! There was reason to believe this guy had spilled secrets, and you don’t stop an investigation until you know for sure.

The “reporter” goes on to say there have been other prosecutions of alleged security violations, but does not describe those prosecutions and their merits. I can think of one such prosecution that you must know of. It resulted in the Wikileaks scandal. Would you have the current administration not prosecute that one?

Here is a cautionary lesson given to every person who enters the NSA with a security clearance:

A man who had reached the highest levels of administration within the NSA decided to build his own house. It was going to be big and impressive. He was no carpenter or plumber, but just he knew he could do it. He made many mistakes.

In addition to making amateur mistakes that needed to be redone, he didn’t have storage for lumber and such. Thieves ran off with the lumber, valuable fixtures, and so on. The man fell deeper and deeper into debt as the delays and the thefts piled up, and he finally decided that the only way he could recover financially was to sell secrets, and the bigger the better. So, he found a way to do it.

He got caught, but he thought he could not be prosecuted. The secrets he had sold were too important to come out in a public trial. He was wrong. The government found a judge, lawyers for prosecution and defense, and a jury, all of whom had sufficient security clearances to do justice. The trial was not open to the public and not publicized, but the man’s rights were fully protected. That is why you never heard of it.

He got life in prison. His first cellmate was a convicted killer. He swore he could not be kept behind bars, and to prove it, he started telling some secrets to his cell mate. He was sure he would have to be released if he gave his word that he would keep quiet upon release.

Wrong again! He got life in prison in SOLITARY. His wife can visit once per month for one hour. He probably wishes he got the death penalty.

    True story.

Chris, honey…Obama never had a plan to begin with and he doesn’t have one now.  Some idiot told him to throw a trillion dollar stimulus at the economic monster blob that was eating our nation and he dimly said ‘uh…okaaay’.  Then stood there while nothing happened.

He doesn’t have a plan, he never had a plan, he’s not going to have a plan.  I imagine him sitting in front of an empty storefront with tumbleweeds blowing down a street with a sign that says ‘why doesn’t anyone want to buy my overpriced green lightbulbs?’  Pathetic, really.

Obama needs to get out of the way of business and charge them with fixing the economy and get it rocking.  All he had to do was be a cheerleader and we all would put our backs to it.

As for myself, Obama has fully lived up to my expectations that I had for him in the Summer of 2008. My fears that I had hoped were mere pessimism, have come to fruition.  The solution to our economic problems are to get another person in the job that has a clue as to how the economy works and the chutzpha to do the job.  Which means, we have to wait until 2012.

Chris Matthews, trying to walk back his sycophantic behavior toward Obama?

  • Jeepers

    Nonsense.

He had a fully democrat controlled congress for two years to work with.

…and in that time, not one single budget.

Funny how some Obamanites can only remember from http://www.mediaite.com/tv/chris-matthews-on-obamas-leadership-we-dont-know-what-he-wants/#Nov. 2010 forward and then try to lay the blame with the “tea party”. Where was Obummer’s plans BEFORE Nov. 2010? Why is it that your leader recently said that in the coming months he will lay out his economic plan? Where was it for the first 2.5 years?

  • Cmaltese

IF he has a vision, and IF he has ideas – both of which he’s doing a fabulous job of hiding from everyone – then as President, he should be able to get these things across.

Face the facts. Your Dear Leader is anything but, and he’s going down in 2012.

“…What would he want us to do in terms of debt reduction?… Would he cut?”

This question actually is answered in his 2012 budget proposal that increased spending EVEN MORE and was voted down unanimously in the Senate.

“What would he do to create jobs if there was no
    opposition?”

This question actually is answered in the bills passed by a Dem-controlled House and filibuster-proof Senate that dumped a trillion dollars down a hole and the best they can say about a plan that was supposed to keep unemployment below 8% is that they “successfully” kept unemployment below 11%.  Thanks.

What do you think he’s been doing for almost three years…this was his intention so that every mind-numbed, brainwashed robot would vote for Democrats under the guise of social justice…he’s destroying the economy, just like Jimmy Carter did; and take a look at that disaster, one rightly forgotten by the NYTs, the LATs and other fishwraps of record…if you actually believed his 2008 campaign speeches, then more the fool you, for being so naive and gullible…he never planned on doing anything than taking down the middle class and fooling them into believing his lies, his distortions and his rhetoric..and his poll numbers will continue to slide into the toilet, because there isn’t any there there…

That is what the Republicans tell you. They don’t tell you they blocked him at every turn.

  • Fun_jumper

he won’t have to worry about them much longer, in another year he will be retired and giving speeches with Chavez

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kristen-McFarland/100000021591971 Kristen McFarland

Really, honey, then why haven’t the Democrats proposed a budget in over 800 days…why did Republicans have to compromise with themselves??? Why did Obama submit a budget that was voted down in the Senate 97-0????..The only thug is Obama, leader of thug Democrats…and a failure to boot..he’s a disappointment to liberals too…where have you been??? Except in hindsight the Land of Oz and the world of Fantasy & Science Fiction…because that is where Obamaites dwell, isn’t it????

  • DJ

No, that’s what elections tell you, you numbtard. When Obama was elected, Democrats had the WH and a majority in both houses and did nothing but ram through Obama care and run up the deficit. Show me a budget… PLEASE. You can’t, because there never was one. Not even a proposed one.

  • may of teck

Wrong.  He never HAD any ideas other than how to get elected.

  • Richardducat

So you are saying that BHO is not smart enough to overcome 64 “hillbillys”? Yeah, he is a leader!

After reading some of these thoughts. Behold the dawn comes.

  • Reggie

“and there are other conservatives who block everything Obama wants to do.”
Have you noticed that the liberals in the Senate have not passed any pieces of legislation that would help this country, I’m sure it’s not “out of principle” is it???

  • Anonymous

So, Democrats have never “blocked” a Republican president??? You are utterly clueless.

It’s called politics. It is a full-contact activity and not for the weak or those with delicate egos, i.e. Obama.

Face it: Obama is in over his head. He knows nothing more about economics than how to spell the word. He knows how to be an activist and talk so airheads will listen, but he can’t lead, can’t negotiate, and can’t manage true compromise – which is what democracy is all about.

What Obama does well is whine. And then he’s leading a choir: His sycophant media whines, then his mindless drones whine along in perfect airhead-harmony.

I did not say the tricks of politics don’t go both ways. The subject was Obama’s image problems, not Bush’s or Reagan’s.

  • Anonymous

    I disagree.

    As Benjamin Franklin said:

“When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

And, Alexis de Tocqueville agreed saying:

“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.”

In the 60′s the left started moving the government toward becoming everyone’s nanny. They began to convince large segments of the population that the government should take care of them and the politically-correct others of the day, replacing self reliance, responsibility for ones self and ones family with government checks, “benefits” and “programs”. The decline was started and inexorably accelerated.

Thomas Jefferson made it clear what policy should drive and define the government:

“The policy of the American government is to leave their citizens free, neither restraining nor aiding them in their pursuits”.

Jefferson and the rest of the Founders would be disgusted with what we’ve done to the greatest form of government ever created over the past 50 years.

How very liberal of you to celebrate diversity

He’s the head of the Democratic Party. He can’t even get them in line.

To lead, you have to be a leader. If you’re a leader, people will follow. He can’t lead.

  • Mark

Forgetting the fact that he had COMPLETE control of congress for 2 years.I keep waiting for the great 70s commercial slogan “Where’s the beef?”

  • Anonymous

Even worse from their perspective, they sold themselves on the idea that his weaknesses were actually strengths.  It was good he wasn’t a take charge kind of leader, they said.  He’d use a style of management suited to academia in which he’d be deliberative, listen to advice from all sides and make up his mind based on reasoned debate (but, him being an ideologue, little did they know deliberation and debate were meaningless).  Good that he spoke in general terms, for he could be above petty politics and be a unifying force (but, with such unrealistic expectations, they could only have the perception of diminished return).  And so on and so on.

After sticking to this diet for 3 years, their delusions supported by the media, I’m sure they
don’t know what to think.  Besides, as you say, anger – at us and the world.

  • caconservative

Matthews doesn’t know what Obimbo wants? He’s been telling Liberals from the beginning. He stated that he wants to remake America, and that it would a direction that wouldn’t be embraced but, once attained, America would be better for it.
What he was talking about was socialism. Clear, and unmistakable and Matthews can’t figure out what Obimbo wants? Matthews back-peddling on Obimbo may be an indication that he has figured it out and is now looking to distance himself from his personal Messiah!

  • Supermajority

With the democratic super-majority in crongress, it was literally numerically impossible for Republicans to block one-single-thing (that’s how they passed obama-care).

Even with all that control, not one single budget.

He wants your leg to tingle dummy!

Yeah well..they are all waiting to be taken seriously by someone who calls themselves ‘turdblossom’ but as the saying goes–’nosce te ipsum’ and YOU apparently do!
