Egyptian President Mubarak Announces He Is Not Stepping Down Immediately

Video

Egyptian President Mubarak spoke on Egyptian State TV to the many protesters in Egypt awaiting word on whether he would be resigning immediately from his position as President. Despite early reports suggesting Mubarak might begin the transition of power now, he did not announce that he would be stepping down.

Instead, Mubarak claimed that he would be transferring some powers to the Vice President and promised to follow “the track of peaceful transition until September.” At one point in the speech Mubarak boasted that he has never succumbed to international pressure and vowed to stay in office in order to keep Egypt unified and to guarantee a fair election in September. Given that the Egyptian crowd of protesters greeted this news by repeatedly chanting “get out,” it seems this story is far from over.

In other news, fans of Ron Paul are beyond nuts.

    And rude.

They’re annoying me while I watch CPAC.

Will someone alert maddow when everybody in cairo starts running around blowing bubbles and dancing in the streets?

  • JJasper

This isn’t exactly surprising, given Mubarak’s temperament and past actions. It makes sense that he would fight to maintain his position. That said, the night isn’t over. I saw that Richard Engel is reporting that the protesters are marching on the Presidential Palace, so we will see how these demonstrations evolve.

Jeff, you’re the biggest moron there is. The situation is far from over in Egypt. Do you even watch the news, or do you just read Wiener? BTW: How is CAIR suit going.

  • The Real Royal King

… and, he has apparently lost the army and the air force. Only the palace guard remains. Maybe.

I hate to say I told ya so, but I did say dream on he is not going anywhere. The news media just want to create an historical moment, that’s why they made and succeeded in getting people’s attention. He would go when he decide to, not by some artificial revolution. The strategic position of Egypt is too vital to give it up. What would you have the Israelis do? they would be in disarray, so everyone needs time to adjust before he could leave. You just don’t tell someone like him to leave, pathetic.

yes let’s continue to support dictators for democracy, cause that has never come to bite us in the ass. Ie: The shah, saddam hussein, Osama bin laden.

Sky makes a decent point. Mubaral needs to go simply because he’s lost his people. However pushing him out over night could lead to major instability in the region. I heard an analyst say today that an over-night removal will be dangerous for all. But give Egypt a little time (September) to have a campaign and figure out how to have a fair and equal election, and things will be better for all.

Patience is needed, despite the desire to replace a dictator.

This ain’t gonna be good, boys and girls.

This puts the military in an awkward position. They either have to support Mubarak (either obvoiusly or obstensibly) and crush the crowd or escort the idiot ditator to the door.

Either that, or the crowd makes sure he swings from a lamp post and everyone loses – or they open fire.

Bad choices all around unless Mubarak waves goodbye.

And that is the best you have? To use this as another lame excuse to insult “the other side.” Well, here is a hint, son. The “other side” in this case is not left or right. It is a brutal dictator that refuses to yield to the will of the people.

However, if it makes you happy to use the continued suffering, oppression and persecution of people as a launchng pad for your pathetic insults, go right ahead, Unlike Egypt, America has free speech, which includes moronics from the likes of you.

This is only going to get uglier. The protesters are willing to fight and die for freedom. Mubarak seems willing to kill and punish for power. To draw a historical analogy, this was Mubarak’s “let them eat cake,” moment. And we know how that turned out.

Say a prayer and keep a hope for those brave folks in the streets.

US is in a tough spot too, get tough with a country who’s stood by some very touchy US decisions in the area, or go against a democratic uprising. Rock and a hard place.

The rational, civilized world must not allow the Muslim Brotherhood (where Al Qaeda originated from) to impose their brutal theocratic tragedy on the people of Egypt, Israel and the region.

Here’s the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, in his own words, on Jews:

“Throughout history Allah has imposed upon the Jews, people who would punish them for their corruption. The last punishment was carried out by Hitler by means of all the things he did to them. Even though they exaggerated this issue, he managed to put them in their place. I will shoot Allah’s enemies, the Jews.”

In response to this, the Obama Administration, whether through ignorance or DESIGN, assures us that the Brotherhood said nice words, and has therefore changed.

Now doesn’t that just bring a warm, fuzzy feeling to the 80% of American Jews who support the Democrats and their policy of appeasement?

    Armegeddon anyone?

Ambassador Shourky told Wolf Blitzer that Mubarak has transferred most powers to Sulieman, but he also said that he doesn’t know if Mubarak can take back power from Suleiman at will. I find that impossible to believe. He is the friggin ambassador!

After Suleiman’s speech it really doesn’t matter since his speech only reinforced what Mubarak said. Suleiman and Mubarak: the two-headed transplant.

The transition needs to be slower and not immediate for stability in the region. Obama should never had said NOW; that was stupid on his part. Now he needs to back off and let the transition happen with the necessary preparations for an election in the fall.

I don’t think he will last till Sept for two reasons.

    1. Pressure from the US.
    2. Pressure from the people. They know if they let up and the media spotlight fades, they will get their heads bashed in by Mubarak and his goons. They have no choice but to keep the pressure for their safety.

What happened today shows how out of the loop the US is on the Egyptian problem with Obama.

Obama was cheering this morning about how great it was going to be with all the changes pointing towards Mubarak quitting. Then we find out he is staying.

This shows that they do not have any effective intelligence in the area except maybe with twitter or watching Al-Jazeera.

Now Obama cant even use the US handouts to Egypt as a threat as the Saudis have said they will bankroll him.

    Great Strategy!!!

It is immensely satisfying to see the Obamo regime get kicked in the ASS over this. Review the comments from Obamo himself, Hilly Clinton, Biddles Biden, and Little Boy Gibbs…no consistency anywhere, and lots of comments being ‘walked back.’ A bunch of Leftist inbreds are what we have here, and they deserve the ass-kicking they’re getting.

Very patriotic of you. WWMD? What Would McCain Do – Invade? There are no good options, only degrees of different bad ones.

  • Annie Oakley

Obama/Clinton/Biden should have kept their traps shut from the beginning and worked behind the scenes, as any competent world leader would have done. He could have talked to the Saudis through back channels and SHOULD have. Instead, Obama makes this about himself- “I did this, I said that…” Everyone with foreign policy experience has been telling him to shut up, but he won’t take anyone’s advice (unless Soros is giving him instructions through his “special” Blackberry). He has made matters worse and endangered our relationship with Egypt, Israel and the Saudis, no matter what happens next in Egypt.

I never thought I’d see a president more incompetent than Carter, but Obama has exceeded my wildest expectations.

At this point he should just hand it all over to Suleiman, though I’m getting from that puddle of mud he dribbled out that this is not possible under the Egyptian constitution. This is going to get exceedingly bloody if something doesn’t break here. Barring that direct transfer, perhaps having the military take over until a reasonable election can be held is the way to go.

On the one hand, I wish the protesters would take yes for an answer. On the other, they’ve got fair reason to not believe a word Mubarak says. What a mess.

It seems one of the Egyptians biggest enemies are the Leftists who have been organizing pieces of the demonstrations. Mubarak is not perfect, but he brought some stability.

It’s funny how Obama wouldn’t get involved in the people trying to bring some democracy to Iran, but he’s more than willing to screw the Egyptians by allowing the Leftists and Muslim Brotherhood to gain power.

When the protests quieted down, all of a sudden the labor unions came to the rescue. Gee, I wonder who was behind this? (Soros?)

Very true. It’s a tough situation all around, and the people stomping their feet and saying, “I want it NOW,” without thinking through all the possible outcomes are making a dangerous mistake.

Republicans are confused they don’t if they want to support the protesters or Mubarak. Cheney and Beck are supporting Mubarak the Teabaggers are pulling for the protesters. Fox doesn’t know what to do. Behind the scenes Fox editors and producers are going through anguish and anxiety attacks.

Its kind of like immigration. Republicans don’t know if they like it or not. They like cheap labor; paying under the table but they don’t like looking at them and they don’t like having to pay for them to use the ER room.

And to top it all off you got CPAC. Where would we be without CPAC.

Considering the current track record Liberals have for “misread of the situation,” American cannot afford to continue down the path leading to that dangerous and wrong-headed presumption.

Coincidences rarely just happen accidentally. Riots in Greece and other nations are genned-up by Leftists demanding continuation of unsustainable ‘entitlements’ due to their emasculation into Leftist dependency. Radicals find it too easy to stir up rebellions that suit their agenda of radical global Communism. As Alz says, there are too many similarities in Egypt that fit the Alinsky………Soros………Marxist patterns.
