The sad passing of world civil rights icon Nelson Mandela eclipsed all other news Thursday, as people all over the globe mourned the loss of a singularly iconic figure. The news also presented a challenge for the three cable news networks, which had to make choices about how, and what, to cover. For example, MSNBC had to decide whether to preempt its heavily-promoted, and newsworthy, interview with President Obama, or to stay with coverage of the world’s reaction to the momentous passing.
