Karen Handel Denounces Planned Parenthood’s ‘Vicious Attacks And Coercion’ Against Komen Foundation

Video

Karen Handel — who today resigned from her position as Susan G. Komen’s senior VP following a controversial policy change that resulted in the foundation cutting its grants to Planned Parenthood — visited America Live‘s Megyn Kelly to explain her decision to step down, as well as her role in the foundation’s new policy.

Handel told Kelly that it is “absurd” to suggest she was the main force behind the foundation’s altered funding policy, adding that policy changes were carefully vetted.

“Last time I checked,” she continued, “private, non-profit organizations have a right and a responsibility to be able to set the highest standards in criteria on their own, without interference, let alone the level of vicious attacks and coercion that’s occurred by Planned Parenthood. It’s simply outrageous.”

Kelly brought up how, during her 2010 gubernatorial run in Georgia, Handel had been outspoken about wanting to strip Planned Parenthood of tax payer support. Handel insisted that her mission at Komen had always been, first and foremost, the cancer sufferers and survivors that the foundation serves. “The only group that has made this issue political,” she added, “has been Planned Parenthood.”

I am sure she will be able to leverage this disappointment into an even better job at some non-profit conservative organization funded by donations from wingnuts.

  • Anonymous

Ms Handel must think we are all stupid.  She had an agenda going in to Komen and followed through, the fact that those of us who supported Komen pulled our support due to Ms Handle’s politics is certainly our right. She can blame PP all she wants but the fact is she was found out and she’s not happy, so blame everyone else.   I’m sure Komen’s anti-abortion supporters will continue to support this organization as for me I’ll go direct to PP.  Facts are the only 3% of PP funds go toward abortion but please don’t let the facts get in the way. The conservatives have found a new boogie man and it’s PP.

  • Anonymous

Planned Parenthood made it political? They made the Komen foundation start cutting funding to right wing targets like institutions performing embryonic stem cell research and themselves after Karen Handel was hired? Wow, they’re certainly a powerful group indeed.

  • Anonymous

Yeah right! And the first place you go is Fox News.  We know what your agenda was, we aren’t stupid!

  • Gloves Robin Donahue

Komen gave in to the viciousness of the left and ruined itself in the process.
You don’t give in to a bully.
You pick up a 2 by 4 or a brick if you need it, and hit them back harder.

    One more victim of Obamacare.

The Komen organization must be held accountable on their promises and forced to fully restore all of the funding they had on record before their offensive and wrongheaded decision to listen to the radial demands of fringe anti-Constitution evangelical groups. Women’s health is not about left or right, but about what is best for the country and what is best to save lives. Komen has received a huge black eye from which they will never recover unless they fulfill their promise and restore every penny of women’s health funding.    www.sunstateactivist.org

    Already under HCR, we have:

    No preexisting conditions.
Insurability of young adults living with their parents.
Tax credits for employers who pay their employees’ insurance premiums.

Unfortunate, but I guess we can deal with whatever angst the insufferable Ms. Handel is experiencing. However self-imposed it may be ….

Are you kidding me.  Your opinion is a laugh a minute.  Go Plan Parenthood, Go Obamacare! Scares you doesn’t.

  • Anonymous

Sorry typo  Scares you doesn’t it?

  • Anonymous

So… Obama’s healthcare policy is responsible for the public outcry over what people consider a political decision driven by someone on the right that caused Komen to reverse that decision? Wow…

If they had openly admitted to cutting off funding to PP because of pressure from right wing evangelical groups, you’d probably be lauding them for taking a principled stand, but when it’s pressure from the left and the moderate right, it’s bullying and should be met by brutal attack rather than reversing the decision. :)

More Foxing Lies.  Planned Parenthood did not attack SGK the people did.

What kind of interview would MSNBC have given her – do you think she’s stupid?   Apparently you do because you disagree with her, but using that as a reason to think her stupid just shows your own ignorance, so I won’t assume.

I love it when Republicans hate the free market. The free market spoke on Komen’s decision. You can do whatever you want lady but we as consumers and people who donate to Komen can choose to donate elsewhere. The free market worked here and this only exposes Republicans as hypocrites. They only love the free market when it works for them.

  • http://twitter.com/Staciisa_bitch Staci Chase

Handel shouldn’t have pushed this non-political organization into the political stage.  She was even too right wing for her own party in Georgia.  Politics has no place in women’s health.

  • Anonymous

At least Handel admitted here that it wasn’t about being under investigation that it was more than that. So I guess we can add liar to her and Komen’s resume.

  • Anonymous

They ruined themselves by their initial  decision which was obviously bogus and would have caused moderate women to no longer donate to them.  They are destroyed!  you are right if they didn’t reverse, maybe they could have limped along with donations from the right only.  They couldn’t hit back with their drastically diminished credibility and their days would have been numbered.  They destroyed their image, and that is the end of any charity.

The 332,278 abortions Planned Parenthood performed over the 365 days of 2009 equals an average of 910 lives terminated per day–or about 38 per hour, or one every 95 seconds !

Now that their horrific “abortion-factory” behavior and actions have been exposed, Planned Parenthood probably will do an ACORN and change their name, while continuing the same disgusting behavior. I suggest they tell it like it is and call themselves: “Unborn Fetus Murderers R Us” with their slogan  “One Billion Fetus Murders Served – and Counting.” (And, of course, “Want Fries with that Abortion?”)

A key tenet of the warped ideology of the lunatic-left d-cRAT socialists: abort, abort, abort – and do it WITH TAXPAYER MONEY !

Adolf had his ovens; the lunatic-left have the mass abortion factory of planned parenthood.

SPECIAL HISTORICAL NOTE: Margaret Sanger, who founded Planned Parenthood, was an avowed racist and bigot who believed in eugenics, and wanted blacks and other minorities eradicated by giving them access to abortion and other reproduction limiting methods !!!!!!! (Now you know why the lunatic-left supports PP abortions so strongly.)

  • Anonymous

Sad you demonize Planned Parenthood since so many millions are given cancer screenings and other reproductive medical services by PP who would otherwise be without care.

Does anybody remember when this story was about women’s health?

Whether you like Planned Parenthood or not, they are an organization, and in several geographic areas the only organization, that provides health care services to women who could not otherwise afford them.

What got me with all of this was that SGK wsa providing money for breast cancer screening; something that is so universally accepted regardless of political persuasion that no body (sane) would have said “How dare you fund that”

I’m glad that the Susan G Koman Foundation ended up having this blow up in their face. Made a lot of money for PP. Maybe SGK needs to leave politics to politicans.

Maybe the politicians and wannabe politicians need to leave the charitable breast cancer funding to Komen.

  • Anonymous

Again, if they had intended to do that, they could have done that by declining future funding when their grants were up for renewal, not creating new rules to disqualify them from funding altogether. But hey, it wasn’t political, the fact that it and stem cell research have been targets of the right for considerable time now is purely coincidental.

What kind of a woman gets an abortion these days? The Guttmacher Institute has released a report that tracks abortion rates across different demographic groups. One of the most stunning findings, particularly in light of the new health care reform legislation, is how abortion has become increasingly entwined with poverty.

According to Guttmacher, “The proportion of abortion patients who
were poor increased by almost 60%—from 27% in 2000 to 42% in 2008.” As
you might expect, the profile of the abortion patient is
disproportionately poor, as well as disproportionately Black or Latina.

No, I don’t think you can.

  • Anonymous

Undoubtedly.  She’ll now be their poster-bigot.  Poor Karen has been the victim of a “vicious attack” against her.  Under her leadership, Komen changed the rules so that Planned Parenthood would be defunded.  Handel has made her position (anti-choice) very, very clear from the get-go and she was more than happy to defund PP.

The “push back” from the PP people…why was that a surprise?  Kelly keeps talking about how much of a shock the “push back” was and the celebratory air from the pro-choice side.  Why is this a shock?  What about the celebrations by the “right” after Prop 8 was pushed through?  ”We successfully denied gays and lesbians the same rights that we all take for granted.  WOO HOO!”

  • Anonymous

heh yes, I followed up that comment after I saw another one of your comments. My bad.

American “public” was taken on a wild ride and seemed to enjoy it.  Nothing to do with right wing.
    - Koman stated they would not renew….6 weeks ago.
    - PP, said “oh yah, watch this”!
    - took them 6 weeks to figure out how to get these women who dared to do what every charity has to do, see where they get the most bang for their buck and follow their mandate.
    - PP went to every far left loony women’s outfit and told them extactly when and how to hit Koman.  Exactly!  A well orchestrated “shake down”

  • Anonymous

…and PP still can’t/doesn’t provide breast cancer screening.  Something that is universally accepted, regardless of political persuasion is vital to women.

I’m glad you understand the nuances of this smear.

  • Anonymous

you’re right. So why is PP so very political and made this into something it was not?

Koman’s defunding of PP had nothing to do with abortions and everything to do with lack of facilities under PP to provide women breast cancer screening facilities.

“Planned Parenthood receives nearly half a billion dollars in taxpayer funds, including from Medicaid payments. Along with its political arm, it spent at least $1.7 million on lobbying at the federal level last year. Its political expenditures for the 2012 cycle have swung 100% for Democrats and against Republicans. Its political web site ranks a series of Republicans as “chumps.”

Wrong, seek456. PP does provide breast cancer screening, including manual breast exams, self-exam instruction, education and referrals for mammograms when medically recommended.  You obviously have no idea what’s involved in preventing and treating breast cancer.  Mammograms are performed in very few facilities — mostly hospitals — due to the expense of the technology. Mammograms are generally not even recommended for women under 40 years of age.

  • huffnnoccupyn

Dang it! We agree on something.

  • Hout Bosques

Yeah, this woman is bad, bad news; it’s written all over her, including in particular that immediately following Fox ‘breaking’ this story for its faithful troopers, seconds later there she is being served up in a puff-ball piece. She’s got the basic rhythym of the winger attitude down pat: I’m not political, it’s just how I see things; and if you agree with me, you’re not political either; but if you disagree with me, hey, you’re playing politics.
I’m having trouble seeing how this is going to save Komen. Commercial organizations that used to donate & sign up readily are now going to treat being identified with Komen as “controversial”. Can anyone here name even a single health oriented NFP that’s ever survived a crisis with even a fraction of this intensity? I expect Komen is going to experience a dramatic drop in donations over the next few months – it’s already started happening – then feel compelled to go with some aggressive reorganization, which will fail, & not just the Komen model but the Komen name will disappear within 2-3 years at most. That’s not to say Planned Parenthood ‘won’ anything here. It’s not set up for the level & intensity of fund raising that Komen has developed. There was a feature investigative piece in the New York Times some months back which exposed suspect & questionable Komen practices, including reeking of ‘synergy partnerships’ with for profits, and showing how little of the big pie Komen gathers goes to stuff that actually does proven or even provable good in fighting breast cancer. The Komen fixation is on mammograms, which holds some limited significance in early detection, but nothing in the nature of any sort of ‘cure’, while the article made clear Komen has chosen to promote the implication that mammograms AS “the cure”. As a result, the most profitable ‘synergies’ with Koman turned out to benefit the manufacturers of mammography machines.Still, Komen funds SOME potentially worthwhile research projects which otherwise wouldn’t get funding, & provides SOME grants to worthwhile projects, chief among them being Planned Parenthood – & none of those projects is set up to raise funds for themselves, let alone at the level Komen has (half a billion). The reaction from the Planned Parenthood president, who’s appeared on Lawrence O’Donnell’s show several times over the last week, isn’t in the least like gloating – she says she wants Komen to succeed in its fund-raising, & there’s no reason at all to believe she doesn’t mean it & every reason to believe she does.In the interim, the good news is people have responded quickly and strongly in supporting Planned Parenthood directly – $3 million just up to last weekend, presumably now more. But it’s stop gap. As questionable as Komen’s practices have been, apparently it’s been better than the alternatives.

  • Hout Bosques

Not sure YOU understand any better. Declining a compensation package may come simply from not being entitled to such a package in the first place; I’d call that the Occam’s Razor option in this case, because she’s not been with Komen all that long, & it is after all a NFP org. As a fallback to that overwhelmingly most likely scenario, I’m thinking she’s already got her next wingnut welfare assignment lined up, & her thinking might be that it’s smart for appearances sake to decline pursuing a package from Komen. But I still go with the first as overwhelmingly more likely, given how she reated to the question from M. Kelly.

  • TVNewsViewer

This wasn’t about abortion for me, it was the threat to a competent medical provider who serves at need women.

Besides, you might find that we agree on a couple of things there Huff.

  • Hout Bosques

You continue to post comments that suggest that if you’re anything at all, it’s not a lawyer. If Nancy Brinker & the Komen board wanted her gone, she’s gone – & the scenario of it being ‘suggested’ to her that she resign for the good of the organization is completely consistent with the picture shown in the NYTimes investigative piece a few months back. The Komen organization is in full panic mode & that’s precisely when such ritual sacrifices are required. The Komen Foundation is unlikely to survive this controversy for much longer anyway, but NOT cutting ties with Handel would be suicidal, since she was already known & intimately identified with this move by Komen to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, AND is notorious for being a hardline wingnut politician from when she ran for governor of Georgia.

  • Hout Bosques

It was already pretty heavily into politics, under Brink. It may be that hiring Handel just put it over the, uh, brink.

  • Hout Bosques

    Linkies, por favor.

  • Hout Bosques

Not a silly bet at all. For example, just look at this chart:

    http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2012/02/07/chart_of_the_day_the_conscience_exemption.html

What that chart shows is that most Americans support President Obama’s policy, AND that Catholic Americans are pretty much in that main stream.

So where’s the controversy coming from? It’s the religiotic right, the fundys, who are outraged by it. Why is that – could it be because it was President Obama who made the direction, rather than their local governor Foibus Driphood? D’oh.

I’m sorry jeffrey, but you are not correct.  Do you realize there are even mobile screening units that visit all over the States regularly?  I’m well aware who should have mammograms.  Free screening!  They usually go to economically depressed areas and park in shopping centers etc.

PP does not come to anyone’s mind when seeking an answer to a breast cancer scare (a woman feels a lump).  That would be the last place said woman would go to.  Please, don’t paint women as being so stupid that they don’t know what PP is/isn’t.  Most women are well aware of their bodies, and they are the ones who know their breasts and feel when something isn’t right.

I think PP serves a useful purpose.  I wish they would spend all their funds on helping women, instead of politicizing.  That said, they “took down” Koman, a very respectable outfit with a stellar record, because they got pissed off.  That is unfair, and it just further divides factions, which should not be divided.

Koman is a charity – completely devoted to breast cancer research, awareness, etc.  The hurt that PP put on them was so vile and it continues with this story and the slant to it.  Let’s start being honest.  A charity regularly funds and defunds organizations.  It’s not new, revolutionary, it’s their mandate (if they are an honest organization) to regularly look at where there money goes and decided where they would get the biggest bang for their buck.  Sad really.

Staci, do you want to prove that my information was incorrect?

You will find, you don’t have to do a lot of checking, that everything in my “source” was honest and everything stated was factual.

My thoughts also. She goes on about a private not-for-profit’s right to structure grants as it chooses. Yes, and individual and corporate donors have every right to withold support as we choose. The demonizing of PP is ludicrous, particularly as the facts that have come out point to a clear plan to defund PP and only them. Komen is also quite unsophisticated if it didn’t fully expect PP to talk to the media in order to marshall support. The right wing can pretend all it wants, but most Americans actually support PP. In fact, most actually believe the poor deserve healthcare services. Imagine that.

  • Anonymous

Well said. It’s amazing how healthcare reform is responsible for everything the right-wing hates. Why not add the weather, rush-hour traffic, and my sinus headache? It’s Obama’s fault, I’m sure.

She basically admitted it was her idea when Megyn pointedly asked if it wasn’t her idea.  She just looked stunned, gulped hard and didn’t answer the question.

i don’t watch it, because it is biased. Why would you watch a cable news channel that always has the same POV?  At least MSNBC has 3 hours in the morning hosted by a Conservative.  Plus Fox News lies.  Their lies are well documented.  Why would I want to watch a biased news station that doesn’t tell the truth?

Well, the contoversy is about Planned Prenthoods involvement in abortion provision.

It’s always amusing to watch these sad, Reich-wing sows decrying “vicious attacks.” They spend their days and nights telling hateful lies about their opponents, then break out the crocodile tears when the TRUTH about their activities comes out. Cry me a river, you chunky mutt. See you next Tuesday.

Karen Handel has all the insight of a snail. She wouldn’t recognize a spontaneous response if it came up and bit her in the nose. She gambled and lost because she didn’t recognize that breast cancer doesn’t make choices between pro-choice and anti-choice. the SKF made a horrible judgment call. Hopefully they learned from it and will move on.

Yes its all Planned Parenthood’s fault – pot meet kettle…

Funny how its always because of the “viciousness of the left” when a progressive boycott works and it’s also because of the “viciousness of the left” when a conservative boycott fails…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Theresa-Darklady-Reed/581698361 Theresa ‘Darklady’ Reed

    Healed? No.

Able to access medical care that can help them become healed? Yes.

What an outrage! Medicine for those who need it? Talk about un-American!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Theresa-Darklady-Reed/581698361 Theresa ‘Darklady’ Reed

It’s also bullshit, because nobody provides mammograms except for mammogram specialists, who can’t provide services until a patience receives a referral and who do not need funding.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Theresa-Darklady-Reed/581698361 Theresa ‘Darklady’ Reed

Once again, cuz you guys aren’t paying attention… NO MEDICAL FACILITY has mammogram facilities except for a mammogram facility.

The only way a woman can receive a mammogram is by getting a referral, which is what Planned Parenthood is able to do when it gives a manual exam to a woman and suspects there may be a problem.

Planned Parenthood becomes political because not everyone realizes that a full range of reproductive health care is health care that women (and men) need. If the Jehovah Witness church demanded that funding be cut off for blood transfusions, no one would defend them and claim that blood banks were making the situation “political.”

Government just big enough to fit in a woman’s uterus…

That really puts Grover Norquist’s oft-repeated maxim of “Government big enough to drown in a bathtub” in a whole new, disturbing light.

    It all makes sense now.

yeah, jones is still doing good work, and not tryinig to make up allegations and lies to hurt Planned Parenthood like handel. . . oh, that’s right, she’s gone, bye bye bigshot. . I guess you lose ahahahahahahahahah

  • Anonymous

does the gop pay you as a plant to just be plain obnoxious and derogatory, because you rarely make a relevant statement about anything?

  • Anonymous

The fact seems to be that Komen had made this decision before Handel was
even there. But don’t let that keep you from getting your rage on.

That’s interesting . Where did that fact come from?
It does seem clear that the board of directors agreed with her and the fact that they hired her might indicate they agreed before she got there. To bad they couldn’t have been straight about their decisions.

  • Anonymous

That strategy doesn’t mean the board didn’t generally agree with her. Otherwise it would have never gone through.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IC7HRBJRXKA7IKTTZS5W3UIECQ Agent of Truth

She would deny the truth and the facts.  That is the republican way.

  • Anonymous

Koman’s defunding of PP had nothing to do with abortions and everything
to do with lack of facilities under PP to provide women breast cancer
    screening facilities.

But that’s not what Komen said is it?

Cancer screenings and Mammograms are not the same thing.

Poor Karen Handel. Even Georgia didn’t want her as governor. Now, she knows, nobody wants her.  Except Fox.

That is REALLY vulgar, off-the point stupidity

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F76GBN4MI5XBLSWZGZ6QXOILEM Michael

You are making no sense at all, iktumi?. Are you drunk? Mad?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F76GBN4MI5XBLSWZGZ6QXOILEM Michael

Quite right Stacy.  Machine-gun totin’ Karen (check out the pictures on the web) was too extreme even for Republicans in Georgia, which is why she’s a failed politician as well as a devious and immoral one.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F76GBN4MI5XBLSWZGZ6QXOILEM Michael

That’s all totally false, you fool. Just plain Fox-fed, Limbaugh-deluded ignorance.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F76GBN4MI5XBLSWZGZ6QXOILEM Michael

So the political hijacking of Komen by Karen Handel and her cronies is finally over. About time.  Now Komen should go back to doing its job, and never again let itself be misused as a platform for an extremist’s (or anyone’s) political career — or for attempts to impose one person’s religious views on other Americans. I resent Handel’s diversion — morally, it’s theft — of my contributions to Komen. I gave to fight cancer; Handel used the money for her jihad against Planned Parenthood.

Where did PP “take down” SGK? I missed that part! When was PP vile in regards to them?

And the money sent to PP went for just that so why stop after supplying that support for so many years?

Perhaps I didn’t state my opinion the best way possible, but I can assure you I was not drunk and I am definitely not mad.  To have to resort to that argument when someone has an opposing opinion to yours is so sad.  Next time I will be clear and next time maybe you will play nice.  However, by reading your comments to almost everybody I doubt you will.
