Olbermann Tackles ‘False Equivalency’ Between MSNBC And Fox, Defying Jon Stewart

video

Keith Olbermann has already made it clear that he took some issue with the message of Jon Stewart‘s Restoring Sanity/Fear rally on Saturday. And while the fact that he has suspended the most dynamic segment of his show, “Worst Persons in the World,” may send a mixed message, in discussing the rally he made it clear that he will not tolerate his network being compared to Fox News.

Olbermann objected to the way MSNBC was portrayed at the rally, “as if both [MSNBC and Fox News] were equidistant from sanity.” He brought on Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter to debate the topic, who agreed that there were significant differences between the two networks. He noted that Olbermann had apologized for one of the clips used at the rally, something that “the other network doesn’t do.” Alter also took on Stewart much more directly than Olbermann, wondering why “he gets to take shots on his show… [but] when we take shots, that’s not okay. Maybe because it’s not funny enough?”

In contrast, Olbermann went for the naive angle against Stewart, asking why he insisted on “the assumption that if the good guys stand down, the bullies will too.” He did note, however, that Stewart wasn’t the first to compare the networks, but merely subscribes to the view, and went back to attacking Fox News, where, Olbermann joked, “something is coming out of someone’s orifice every day of the week there.”

Olbermann Tackles ‘False Equivalency’ Between MSNBC And Fox, Defying Jon Stewart

I must say, I agree with Olby here. It is a false equivalency – FOX actually has viewers and FOX present both sides, and is fair and balanced.

Months ago I read a recap of the Worst Persons targeted by Olby – like 92% were Conservatives. His guests are always liberal, and he is a sexist joke.

I am a fan of both of these guys and will remain a fan of both, but Jon got it wrong on this one and he should know that. Every night I am amazed at the performance of both of these guys. They serve the people up a plate full of worthwhile news and comedy. But to compare Keith or MSNBC with the other … is a little below the belt. I hope Keith and Jon can move forward with their much needed skills in informing their viewers in their own unique ways. A war is brewing on the media but I do not think it will include these two guys. As a viewer I want the truth, and the facts behind the story. I do not need to be prompted to the appropriate time to laugh or sigh. The people are smart enough to know who they are and we do not need pundits or so-called analyses to direct our actions.

Larry O’Donnell had a GOP congresswoman from TN on tonight along with Ed Rendell tonight. He asked her “specifically, what things would Republicans do do try to help the economy if they gain control?” When she began to answer by saying “first, the Bush tax cuts should be extended” Larry the cable guy immediately groaned audibly and said “aw geez” as she was just strating to speak. When she finished, he said to Rendell “well Ed, I didn’t hear anything worthwhile there, what do you say?” Like an 11 year old. Who just had his marbles stolen. On those rare occasions they do have Repubs on, they literally act like pissy little children. Of course Fox leans right. On the other hand, MSNBC is a pathetic joke with hosts that behave like emotionally dysfunctional babies. Again, Ubernutts is right, there is no equivalency.

  • CosmosDan

    Here’s the thing Keith;
    Jon never said Fox and MSNBC were equal in there hyperbolic and bullshit offenses. His point is there is a line you cross when you stop being a news person informing the public and you’re just using exaggerated attacks for ratings, and all the major networks do it too much. {not necessarily equally}

You are encouraged to continue to take on the bullies, and challenge the bullshit, but do it with piercing facts and less yelling.

  • Sean68

“He brought on Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter to debate the topic, who agreed that there were significant differences between the two networks. ”

    Funniest line in the story.

  • CosmosDan

btw; Jon just did a very funny bit about the Fox exclusive coverage of Obama’s racism in mentioning riding in the back {which was obviously bus even though he’d been saying car for weeks} He rapped it up with a clip of Michael Steel telling Nancey Pelosi to ride in the back of the bus. OMG, wait until Fox finds out. They will crucify that racist bastard.

  • roxsteady

We Liberals love Jon but, most of us including the bloggers are on team Keith today. I agree totally. Enough with the false equivalencies. As for civility, we all have been posting one of our favorite Daily Show bits. See if you can spot the civility. We couldn’t either but, we still loved it!

  • roxsteady

Oh, and those of you who can’t tell the difference between fox and MSNBC should watch the Daily Show from tonight. It’s a clear and classic example of the bullshit they fabricate on fox. Serious bullshit!

  • Michéle

Wow, does Comcast know that it’s Olbermann’s network, that is breaking news to be sure.

Wait, Comcast knew the talent they were getting, and they still bought it Universal, wow.

Perhaps Comcast should have gone to CNBC to see if it was financially savvy to purchase Universal.

  • ChinaCat

This would have been more believable had KO debated this with someone not already predisposed to eager with him, like Alter.

  • CosmosDan

He’s actually included that in a montage about media hyperbole and the point within that very clip is that he doesn’t sell himself as fair and balanced or a news organization.

Civility is being interpreted as a lack of passion and confrontation. It does not have to be that. Expsoe the bullshit with the truth, without wallowing in it.

  • Rusty Shackelford

……he made it clear he will not tolerate his network being compared to Fox news….. and just what the hell is that fruitbowl going to do about it?

  • http://Race4Congress.com Magister

Surprise. Pretty much every pundit that has weighed-in on the issue and the cable networks don’t think they’re the problem. And of course, once you get past the idea that Olbermann thinks that all political discourse began with the advent of Fox News, you then have to wrap your head around the idea that he believes himself some kind of bastion, our Superman, the nation’s lone defender against a bully.

But, what if Fox weren’t to change their tune? So what? They’re still going to have the same viewers and they may push the same agenda, but everyone else will be having reasonable discourse and they’ll just become more of an outsider.

Right now we have one station spewing stuff from the right and another spewing stuff from the left. We have our leaders, pundits and internet commentators playing to their respective audiences, positioning themselves for recognition and in the middle where most of us live, it feels awfully alone.

I could sit here and go through any night’s programming on MSNBC and find as many misstatements or overstatements, as I could on Fox. Contrary to Alter’s position, neither network is firmly rooted in fact because their worlds are too small. They only know what they see coming through their own pipes or on the limo rides from their apartments, but the rest of us, the majority, the ones whom Mr Stewart tried to represent aren’t limited to any one stream of information or just a small window, we have the larger view and neither side of the cable wars serve our society well.

I suggest Mr. Olbermann take a break from tweeting and from watching sports to pay a visit to Hulu. He pull up any episode of “Dragnet” and pay attention to words of Joe Friday. “Just the facts ma’am. That’s what we want.

  • Latin2

In another Olbermann related story Olbermann’s ratings Friday were 1.066 in prime time 8pm, and Bill O’Reilly’s was 3.242 at the same time.

O’Reilly’s numbers for his repeat 11pm show were 1.527 beating out Olbermann’s prime time slot.

O’Reilly’s combined Demo numbers were larger than Olbermann’s total viewers.

    lol

  • Latin2

Glenn Beck’s 2pm Pacific time, 5pm Eastern had a total of 2.381 beating out Olbermann’s 8pm prime time numbers.

I say this every time some news anchor or pundit tries to take on Jon Stewart, and I’ll say it again:

STOP! Don’t try to get into a fight with Stewart. You WILL lose, possibly in spectacular fashion. It NEVER ends well. Whether it’s Rick Sanchez being fired, Tucker Carlson losing his show (Crossfire), or merely Jim Cramer being embarrassed during their interview. It NEVER ends well. The only guy who came out relatively okay was Joe Scarborough, and that’s because after 3 or 4 days, he realized it was a lost cause and dropped it.

  • Cecelia

Nothing sums up Olbermann as much his implication that any behavior he engages in is fine, since he’s a liberal.

  • TfT

    Frances:

Olbermann DOES NOT debate; he brings on people that suck up to him and agree with him only. Be honest.

As for Stewart – when he stops taking clips out of context and presenting a false image of the discussion, then he can criticize others for doing the same, until then, he has no legitimacy criticizing others.

What will Keith do now that WPITW is suspended? How will he deal with O’Reilly’s comments last night?

Olbermann is right – MSNBC and FNC do not compare at all. MSNBC is the propaganda arm for the DNC, FNC is fair, balanced and unafraid. Just look at who in the administration is using the “lean forward” terminology, as if it was all coordinated between the DNC and MSNBC.

Why Fox News Just Might Actually Be the Most Fair and Balanced Cable News Network on the Air
If you compare Fox to CNN and MSNBC, you will undoubtedly find more vigorous debate of the issues. CNN and MSNBC neglect to truly represent the conservative view.

I’ll spare my fellow readers and commentators a repaste of your gassy emission but I will say that I understand why a whiny and petulant sort of person would be drawn to FOX “News”. It tends to feed those pathologies which are acted out in the manner I just described by always affirming the negative, the cynical and by never challenging with information and ideas. I can certainly understand why a segment of American (and apparently Italian) society is drawn to this. Fortunately, of course, it is a very, very, very small segment.

Olbermann and the rest of the crew at MSNBC are like the paparazzi for Fox News hosts. “Today, Glen Beck did this. O’Reilly said that. Steve Doocy is wearing a Ralph Lauren suit with a tie from Brooks Brothers.”

Please be honest with yourself. I suppose it’s to be expected with our first black president that the news would exploit the race element that it contains, but after complaining constantly about false accusations of racism and finding racism where none exists, when it comes to the Tea Party it’s completely hypocritical to then mine Obama’s comment, and say bus often enough, {Hannity just out right lied and said Obama said bus} that people think that’s what he said. It’s a false controversy they purposely created. I have no problem with real news and an intelligent conservative view on it, but this kind of bullshit is something that viewers need to reject from either side. You’d think as part of their fair and balanced approach they might have mentioned that Steele actually said “back of the bus “just a few months ago, but I guess being the number one 24 hour news channel they just forgot. Defend conservative views but please don’t defend this obvious bullshit tactic.

  • felixw

I agree, it is ridiculous to compare Olbermann’s show with the programming on Fox. On Fox, you hear different sides of an issue, something that has never taken place in the history of Countdown. Heck, Countdown rarely even deals in issues. Mostly rants, ridicules, insults, smears and pathetic jokes.

When sarainlalaland make a claim like this, it’s a sign of something less than “semi-intelligent.”

Who do you get your news from?

“Who do you get your news from?”

All over. As much as I watch the Glenn Beck show, I virtually never get news from him. He’s too busy hating Woodrow Wilson to cover anything that’s new.

I use Politico.com, Boston Globe, Miami Herald, WaPo, NY Times, TruthOut, HuffPo, TownHall and a new source that Mediaite turned me onto, the National Journal. Oh, CNN and MSNBC. I also subscribe to Tom Harmann’s newsletter. That’s most of it. No, one more. Crooks and Liars.

I also subscribe to two media watchdogs: Media Matters on the left and Media Research Center on the right.

    Why do you ask?

    F$%king tool!

Did I ever call the Blaze a news source? You are calling Huff Po a news source. How does HuffPo differ from Blaze? Crooks and Liars? MM? LOL! hahahahha please!

You lied. And are incapable of discussion without resorting to personal insults. If you disagree with something I say why don’t you ever try to refute it or discuss it? You don’t because you can’t – so you alway result in name calling.

That’s all your capable of. Cheap juvenile insults.

gawd, sorry for the typos. I am watching election coverage and X-Factor Italia, and not paying attention.

I understand that in your alternative world of far right media, like the sources you use to make references here, real media sources are just propaganda outlets. Right Lalaland? You conveniently left out (of context) that I use a wide range of sources, but that fits in with your sleazy, Beckian style of making your case. Fact is, the sources I cite deal with the facts. TheBlaze deals with gratuitous slander with facts sprinkled in to give them the air of legitimacy. Another way HuffPo differs from TheBlaze is in the sanity of those who comment. I’ve read the idiotic nonsense that passes for commentary there. Much of it makes the insane nonsense from notsofastorsmart and you seem like brilliant insights by comparison. Ditto, btw, for what get posted on GlennBeck.com. Do I need to “refudiate” more of your assertions? I can. It’s not hard you know.

I lied about what Sara? I engage all the time here in discussion, but when I see someone like you writing things that adults don’t believe in, such as Fox being “fair and balanced,” then I have to call it like I see it: you’re SarainLaLaLand. When I see you post something that belongs in the factual world, then I will have an adult conversation with you. You have to earn that, and so far you have not (that I’ve seen).

So give me a straight answer (riiiight): what have I lied about? You keep spouting your baseless claim that I lied and you provide absolutely no bases for your claim.

Lalaland: what lie? I will stop the insult when you give me a reason to believe that you are engaging like an adult. Maybe you should stick with X-Factor. It’s more your speed.

So Huff Po is sane? Of course it is to you, GBR. You’re a far lefty. Ergo, anything said on Fox is a lie, anything coming from left wingers is true. Talk about biased.

how many times do i have to say it? you said i said/consider/believe Blaze is a news outlet. It is a blog, just like huffpo – they have commentary and they link to news stories. you are also ignoring the numerous sources that i link, and focusing on one or two links to videos from the Blaze. why don’t you stop attributing your manners to me.

sanity of huffpo commenters? are you f-in kidding me? huff po obamabots were the WORST out there. i was called a slut, racist and whore from day one, just for preferring Clinton over Obama. people left their in carloads, or were banned during the primary just for stating opposition to obama. my comments in support of hillary were banned ALL the time – and they were civil and sane. it happened all the time to hillary supporters, meanwhile obamabots would attack anyone who opposed obama, and managed to get a comment thru. i love the concept of huff po, but that site became a disgusting pit of bias and hate. i have checked it out a few times lately and it seems to be improving some, but do not lie to me about the *sanity* of the commenters.

you have some weird obsession with beck and spend so much time hating him that you can’t even see the truth when it is right in front of you.

“When I see you post something that belongs in the factual world, then I will have an adult conversation with you.” – personally i would be quite content if you would just ignore me all together.

I was engaging in an adult like manner, and you spewed this BS back:

You’re a supporter of Glenn Beck. You have no awareness of what’s sane and what is not sane. You think HuffPo is not sane because your master has told you what to “think.”

Of course, you neglect that I also subscribe to TownHall magazine, a far right rag. You only want to look at one side, so get off your low pony and wake the hell up. (That’s just rhetorical flourish; I realize that you’re all but brain dead.)

    sarainlalaland says:
“how many times do i have to say it? you said i said/consider/believe Blaze is a news outlet. It is a blog,”

Beck doesn’t refer to his “news” (propaganda) website as a “blog.” I don’t believe I claimed that you referred to is as a news outlet. I just pointed out that you used it as a reference, a link, as if anything that comes from Glenn Beck has any merit or credibility. That’s why I challenged you, not because you wrote that it was “news,” but because you referenced it as it TheBlaze has any credibility. It does not. Nothing associated with Glenn Beck has credibility. That’s what I challenged, not that you claimed it was news. Correct me (by quoting me) if I remember that wrong.

    Sarainlalaland also claimed,
“you have some weird obsession with beck and spend so much time hating him that you can’t even see the truth when it is right in front of you.”

I could have chosen another liar: Limbaugh, Malkin, the bat-shit insane Coulter, but Beck is sleazier and more talented than those other liars. Sara, I’m merely one voice in a growing chorus of people calling Beck out as a liar. Your defense of this deceitful and hypocritical charlatan makes you the one who “can’t see the truth.”

    Sarainlalaland wrote,
“i believe i supported my statement, providing numerous examples”

Examples of Fox being fair and balanced? Let me save some time here and quote someone else taking issue with your bizarre notion:

    The Real Royal King says:

“I’ll spare my fellow readers and commentators a repaste of your gassy emission but I will say that I understand why a whiny and petulant sort of person would be drawn to FOX “News”. It tends to feed those pathologies which are acted out in the manner I just described by always affirming the negative, the cynical and by never challenging with information and ideas.”

CNN doesn’t give the conservative view? Maybe, what you mean is that CNN doesn’t give the far right, reactionary view. They routinely have a Dem and a Republican on to discuss issues.

Sara, you’re way out there. That’s why you “think” (parrot other’s talking points) the way you do. You don’t know the difference between conservative and reactionary or news and propaganda. When you get that straight, and prove that you understand the difference, then I’ll cut you some slack.

  • http://sharethisurlaboutglennbeck.com/ GlennBeckReview

Sarah in La La Land: your links are all to one political season, the 2008 primaries. MSNBC, and Matthews in particular, was rooting for Obama, so Clinton pointed out that Fox had more even coverage of the Democratic primary than MSNBC. Gov. Rendell was talking about the same thing there, specifically to that one campaign. By the way, I still have disdain for Mathews for his sexist treatment of Mrs. Clinton during that campaign. I can’t stand him really. Or Ed Schultz.

You demonstrate selective perception: you see what you want to see and extrapolate what was said by Clinton, who was pissed at Matthews for good reason, and apply that generally to the networks which is anything but fair and balanced between the Dems and the Republicans.

That little trick of yours suggests, yes, that you’re not as sharp as you seem to think you are.

“FOX actually has viewers and FOX present both sides, and is fair and balanced.”
Okay, seriously, now say it again without laughing….

FOX: Take (or make) rumors, run with it, say it over and over on air as if it’s fact, and then imply it is true without making the full statement thereby presenting unfounded rumors as fact and / or just making crap up when forced to, usually to impugn a left leaning politician or pundit with little to no basis.

MSNBC: Take facts of the day in politics, report what happened, call out the important things like misleading statements or outright lies that were said by those politicians / pundits and explain exactly how it was spun and why and to what goal by the radical right.

MSNBC at least can back up their reporting with facts behind all that opinionated commentary. FOX can only do air quotes and say “someone said…” If you really would like to see MSNBC disappear, all you have to do is insist the FOX NEWS stop making things up to fit their agenda. It’s just that easy.
