‘Huge Unforced Error’: Clay Travis Hammers Timing of Trump’s Midterm Convention

OutKick founder Clay Travis ripped the timing of President Donald Trump’s Republican midterm convention on Wednesday, calling it a “huge unforced error” to schedule the two-day event against the NFL’s first games of the season.

“Why is the Republican mid-term convention going head to head with NFL opening night games on Wednesday and Thursday?” Travis, also a Fox News contributor, wrote on X. “Feels like huge unforced error. Most men — and lots of women — are going to watch the two games over politics.”

Trump’s midterm convention, the first of its kind in history, is scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10 in Dallas, Texas — putting it head-to-head with the first two NFL games of the season, including a Super Bowl rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on Wednesday night and a Los Angeles Rams-San Francisco 49ers matchup on Thursday.

Along with the scheduling blunder, though, the convention was already facing resistance from the right. Politico surveyed more than 70 House Republicans last week and found that 45 planned to skip the Dallas gathering altogether, with one unnamed GOP lawmaker dismissing it as “a waste of time” and saying the planning had been “a mess.”

When ABC News reporter Mary Bruce asked the president, en route to Dallas on Wednesday, why he thought that was, he scrambled, “Everybody’s coming to the convention,” before asking what network she was from.

“ABC News, sir,” she answered.

“ABC fake news. One of the worst — you are the worst of all, in my opinion,” Trump snapped. “The reason that some people are not coming is we don’t have room for 500 politicians. We have room for the ones that have a close race, if they’re slightly behind or slightly ahead or tied. But we don’t have room for people that are 35 points up and don’t need to be there.”

Speeches from the president, Vice President JD Vance, Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton, and more are expected tonight in Dallas.
