Stephen Colbert Chides Limbaugh For Ripping Off His Character ‘Ching Chong Ding Dong’

video

Only Stephen Colbert has the very unique position in which he can criticize conservative opinion media personalities in a way that both “celebrates” and slams the often absurd game of rankling political correctness with so-called comedy bits. Take for example Rush Limbaugh‘s recent impersonation of Chinese President Hu Jintao, a bit that many found culturally insensitive. Colbert played the clip and also found it insensitive, but only because it was too similar to his own “Ching Chong Ding Dong” character.

Colbert goes on to point out that Limbaugh is effective taking all the great impressions, like his “negro dialect” and the impersonation of some one with Parkinson’s disease. “It’s funny because its incurable,” said Colbert.

As an Asian-American, Rush’s faux-Chinese offended me greatly.

I was teased quite a bit as a child for my ethnicity by people making the exact same sounds as Rush, and the pure malice behind Rush’s little bit made me want to physically hurt him out of anger, something that I’ve never experienced with a political pundit before.

What really grinds my gears the most was the length of his ‘impression’. He just kept going on and on and on like some crazy with Tourette’s.

Just for perspective on that joke, Cartman is the worst human being ever to live. That is not hyperbole, that is just stating how the character is played.

Cartman is not a role model, or hero, but a cautionary tale.

I took his complaint to be that they weren’t translating as he was speaking, but rather waited until he was done to translate it all. Okay, fine. Then he says “We don’t know..the translator could be making it all up” Right you buffoon, because nobody in America actually speaks Chinese.
He says “I can’t comprehend anybody understanding it” ??? WTF! He goes out of his way to ignorantly mock the language. After his imitation he says AGAIN, “Who knows what he could be saying?” Who knows? Really? What kind of ignorant commentary is that?
I agree with you that at some point we learn not to be offended by other people’s ignorance and that it’s their failing , just as you handle those who mock your religion. I get that and in general that’s how I handle those things as well. I also think that even if you’ve developed a good way of dealing with that kind of ignorance you can understand that mocking a language and a people in that way can be offensive.
Rich Little? Kinda old school isn’t he? I know exactly who you mean. He’s a professional comic who does impressions. Rush is supposed to be a political commentator. Is that his attempt at injecting humor into his show as makes stunningly ignorant commentary? Is that indicative of his audience?

I don’t see any sense in drumming up excessive outrage over minor events, and this is a minor event. I’m far less offended by Rush than I am by elected officials catering to his ignorant rants because they’re afraid of offending the voters who take him to seriously.

What does that mean? Of course it’s a real religion and the majority of people recognize that. There are some Christians who don’t believe it’s Christianity, but it’s still obviously a real religion.

  • Call_Me_Ishmael

Most of you miss Limbaugh’s core point:

All foreigners think in English and so can speak English. They only use other languages to obscure their treachery or to piss off those who know only English. Therefore, Limbaugh’s version of Hu’s “Chinese” was semantically correct and inoffensive.

  • The Real Royal King

    CosmosDan said:

That’s the key to it all.

Mainline Christian churches, including the Roman Catholic Church view Mormonism as non-Creedal, therefore heretical (from Christianity) and do not recognize Mormonism’s baptism rite nor other sacraments. Whilst a baptized Lutheran may become a Catholic without being baptized, a Mormon cannot.

But, it is, indeed, a religion.

My own personal objection to Mormonism, aside from some distressing historical phenomenon, not unlike any other religion, is the insistence by its adherents that it is Christian. All Christians are called to renounce heresy in their presence. If Mormonism did not declare itself Christian, I wouldn’t have the slightest objection to it, much as I have no objection to any other organized religion.

There’s a difference between a stand-up comedian poking fun at the mannerisms or speech patterns of white people and a political pundit maliciously mocking the language and intelligence of a group of people, many of which reside in this very country and are proud Americans.

And, let’s face it, you probably shouldn’t be offended. White people are the cultural majority in America and are safely nested in society. All my life I’ve struggled with the conflict between my nationality and my cultural heritage. I’ve had people tell me I’m not REALLY an American. I’ve had people tell me that I’m too ‘white-washed’ to be Asian.

honestly, the Catholics have no more authority to declare another religion Christian or not than I do. If you’re a Catholic I find it ironic that you would mention distressing historical phenomenon as a negative concerning any other religion.
Mormons worship Jesus as the risen son of God who died for our sins and is the savior of the world. IMO, that gives them the right to declare themselves Christians under a very simple definition of worshipers and disciples of Jesus Christ , the Son of God.
Personally I’m amused and turned off by the doctrinal bickering among Christian churches. IMHO, Christianity in general has perverted and misunderstood the teachings of Jesus to various degrees and it is terribly weighted down with the teachings and traditions of men {that JC specifically warned against} I’m far less concerned about arguing over details of doctrine of any organized religion than I am about the actual behavior of it’s adherents and how that impacts real life. The sad truth is that someone saying they are a Christian doesn’t tell as anything about their character at this point.

As I’ve said many times before, years from now they’ll be playing these Colbert/Stewart clips to find out what was really happening during these turbulent years. How anyone in their right mind can take characters like Palin, Beck and Limbaugh seriously is a sign of our collective psychosis. My dear conservative friends, aren’t you a little bit embarrassed by this fellow being one of the main spokepeople for the conservative/libertarian movement. Limbaugh is especially uncouth. I try to listen on occasion but his bullying, whining tone is very off-putting and, like Beck, he lies and distorts stuff all the time. Don’t you find him a bit of a hypocrite? While millions are obsessed with Limbaugh, it’s, fortunately, not an audience that can grow much bigger. Thanks to more education and changing demographics we’re going to continue moving in a leftward direction like the rest of the world. Even with all their guns the right is going to have to grow up.

Just for perspective on that joke, Cartman is the worst human being ever to live. That is not hyperbole, that is just stating how the character is played.

Cartman is not a role model, or hero, but a cautionary tale.

So, in other words, Cartman is a lot like Rush Limbaugh. I knew the character was based on someone.
