What The…? Chris Matthews Panel Debates the Existence of Hell

Video

On Sunday morning’s The Chris Matthews Show, host Chris Matthews asked his panel to debate Time Magazine‘s recent cover story on the existence of Hell. This isn’t new territory for Time, who drummed up controversy (and sales) by asking “Is God Dead?” in 1966, and as panelist Becky Quick notes, has revisited the topic many times.

Veering off-topic somewhat, Matthews asked “Why does the right wing love the Old Testament so much?”

Joe Klein noted that they “like Revelation better,” while Andrew Sullivan offered that “Jesus loved the poor. He thought they were better than the rich.”

The Time story covers Pastor Rob Bell‘s theory that Heaven and Hell are irrelevant. He’s obviously never watched Jersey Shore.

Here’s the clip, from The Chris Matthews Show:

If hell does exist, I imagine it’s a room full of TVs all playing Chris Matthews.

Matthews (and TC) sure is tackling the vital interests of the day…
What’s the circulation of Time Magazine?

    John McLaughlin, he ain’t…

Andrew “Truther/Birther” Sullivan flushed his credibility down the toilet years ago. Just like “9/11 Truther” VanJones and “Birther” Trump he is a joke. Only the left takes him seriously (kinda like that child molesting weapons inspector the left loved so much during the Bush years). Why do you (Tommy) continue to report on what this jackhole says without pointing out HIS Truther/Birther beliefs like you do with Obama “Birthers”? Why the double standard? Do we not deserve the same info on Sullivan’s “Truther/Birther” thoughts about Palin as we do Obama? Why for Obama “Birthers” and not Palin “Birthers”? Why???

Kind of off topic but I’m really curious…So the whole global warming things seem to divide along party lines..and on the right side those guys are usually really crazy for the Jesus thing and Rapture and Revelation etc etc….So…

    1. Why is it so easy to believe in a invisible man in the sky, walking on water and coming back to kill a beast thats obsessed with the number 666? But man-made global warming? Imposssible!!! Why is this?

    2. Is it because you think GOD will wiggle his finger and make evrything ok?

    3. Is it because the world will end so it doesnt really matter anyway? It doesnt matter what we do to the Earth?(That seems really nihilistic)

    4. If there is a invisible man up there, wouldn’t you want to take care of this amazing “creation”? Why are you so intent on poisoning and raping and killing everything he “made”? Wouldnt he be mad?

Looney Tune Leftists wouldn’t know how to find God if he slapped them in the face, what a load of crap! Anyone who has ever had a personal experience with Our Lord Jesus, know that He exists, and if He exists, so does Satan and Hell.

Well, it would be Glenn Beck for me. Hmmm, haven’t seen a headline on him for days now. Maybe he is in a padded room full of Thorazine.

Thorazine (Chlorpromazine) is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions) and other psychotic disorders (conditions that cause difficulty telling the difference between things or ideas that are real and things or ideas that are not real) and to treat the symptoms of mania (frenzied, abnormally excited mood) in people who have bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a condition that causes episodes of mania, episodes of depression, and other abnormal moods

You are Right. YOU are WAY off the subject and maybe you are Not really curious at all but just trying to get us to believe in global warming which is dumb. There is no invisible man in the sky but there is a spirit that should live within our hearts and this spirit ,God or Jesus or whoever you might believe in is within us all. From man before Christ until now have believed in something , sun, moon, stars, because their is something within us all. There are those who don’t believe but they are still good people who practice or feel they should treat other people with respect ,kindness, love and there are those who are non believers and some who once believed who are just evil but all will have to answer to someone, something, and themselves when time has run out and that day will come to all. My opinion for sure.
My opinion is the earth has been changing on it’s own millions of years and will continue to change a million more. Where did the ice age come from? Where did the dino’s go? The earth is changing with or without humans and we don’t need higher taxes to go all green when it won’t matter except to line the pockets of Washinton, Al Gore and many more.It would take every one living on earth in a tent from here on out and still there will be changes in the weather and earth, from cold to hot ,then hot to cold. There is no proof of global warming except in the minds of those who want to believe the government is telling us the truth. Who believes the government is telling us the truth? I sure don’t. Picking our pockets for more money, higher taxes, that’s the government, Human Greed is what hurts nature and the earth.

Yeah, and Morning Joe gave it about 90 seconds before, thankfully, letting it peter out. Really, why is a current events show discussing the existence of Hell, which is a myth.

How many more ecosystems need to be destroyed? How much oil and toxins have been dumped in the oceans? How much land has been contaminated by radiation? How long can we continue to overfish the oceans? How many more species need to become extinct? This has been going on for thousands of years and increasing with no end in sight. Yes. Geology is the study of the Earth, the materials of which it is made, the structure of those materials, and the processes acting upon them. It includes the study of organisms that have inhabited our planet. An important part of geology is the study of how Earth’s materials, structures, processes and organisms have changed over time.

You had better study some science. It does not take much of a change to create major climate change on earth, This is not much disagreement among scientists around the world who have studied the issue. We are changing the planets ecosystem and the results could be catastrophic. This is not really a topic open for debate. The ship has already sailed. It is amazing that there are still people either naive to willfully living in denial about this reality. Why even have this ridiculous discussion. Like the radical, islmanic, America-hating muslims they admire and support, the lunatic-left d-crat socialists think that when they die they will go to Allah’s “heaven” and enjoy 72 virgins. But here’s the catch in that – the “virgins” they’ll get all look like fat oprah (who, technically, is a “virgin” having never done it with a man). Imagine having to spend eternity cavorting with 72 fat oprahs ! If that’s not hell, nothing is.

Two Muslims stop a man walking down the road and ask ” What is your religion?”

The man says “I’m an Atheist.”

The Muslims look at each other and then ask the man, “Shia Atheist or Sunni Atheist.”

    What Hell ?
With nearly 25000 gods worshipped so far on earth, see”Guide to the Gods ” by Marjorie Leech there should be some debate on the existence of heaven and hell.

My friend, it seems you have missed the the point of at least a good part of the story of Holy Week…

Who was out to get Jesus? Who was out threatened by what He did and say?

Was it not the “traditionalists” and conservative political and religious elements of His time?

Christians need to quit whining for every time someone questions their beliefs, and start making sure they are KNOWN for doing the works that He did.

Im just trying to understand how the logic shakes out for the Team God people. Havent seen any answers yet.

There have been several arguments which attempt to “prove” the existence of god. One of the “unsettled” ones is Pascal’s Wager and it doesn’t attempt to prove the existence of god but rather encourage belief in on. I find it to be interesting to debate as well for there are many angles with which to approach it. To paraphrase it goes something like this:

It’s important to note that Pascal was a christian therefore his wager is that of a belief or not in a christian god.

A: God exists AND I DO believe = Good (Afterlife, Heaven, Trumpets, etc…)
B: God exists AND I DON’T believe = Bad (Hell, Burning, Horns, etc…)
C: No God exists AND I DO believe = None (Neutral, no win/no loss)
D: No God exists AND I DO not believe = None

Therefore it’s better to believe in a God then not to. Pascal makes clear that he feels his argument, should it prove affective, that one should not simply say “I believe in god, problem solved.” but rather pursue avenues which may cultivate a true belief.

There are a number of ways to attack this argument. One of my personal favorites is to attack his assumption which can work in correlation with the “Evil Problem”. How can he assert that god is “good”. Perhaps this is a test and those who choose not to believe in a deity for which there is no scientifically observable evidence for are rewarded for their commitment to understanding and observing “God’s creation”. There are many others and they make for lively discussions!

Religion dates back to the dawn of human culture, to my knowledge (google) is around 2 million years ago. That’s a long time in human terms. “Modern” science or rather the scientific method has only been around since Aristotle’s time in the 300+ BC range. There maybe a cultural component to belief in superstition.

There is also the idea that humans are sensitive to superstition because of the way the brain operates. Our assumptions about things that we sort of take for granted such as people, self, animal are deeply nested in our minds and experiences that differ greatly from these assumptions cause deep and lasting impressions in our memory.

The reason for such wide spread superstition belief is on going.

The first unquestionable stone tools were evidently made and used by early transitional humans and possibly Australopithecus garhi in East Africa about 2.5-2.4 million years ago. While the earliest sites with these tools are from the Gona River Region of Ethiopia, simple tools of this kind were first discovered by Mary and Louis Leakey associated with Homo habilis at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. Hence, they were named Oldowan click this icon to hear the preceding term pronounced tools after that location. These early toolmakers were selective in choosing particular rock materials for their artifacts. They usually chose hard water-worn creek cobbles made out of volcanic rock.

In days of old, stories of hellfire and brimstone weren’t just motivational vehicles, they made great entertainment. These days, we have horror movies, we don’t really need the sulfuric sermoning as much. Another factor is the fact that we live in a modern society replete with amusements and distractions. If you’re in Church, there’s a good chance that you really believe it.
