‘Maybe They Kill Everyone’: Ex-OpenAI Researcher Warns Joe Rogan Artificial Intelligence is ‘On Track’ To Overpower Humans

One downside to the artificial intelligence arms race: it might lead to humanity getting wiped out, former OpenAI researcher Daniel Kokotajlo warned Joe Rogan.

Kokotajlo said he is worried countries like the USA and China are so focused on winning the AI battle they will “cut corners,” leading to safety measures getting overlooked and AI systems growing so powerful they will ultimately see no reason to keep pesky humans around. He made the grim prediction during the Wednesday episode of Rogan’s podcast.

“Eventually, the AIs just have enough hard power that they don’t need to pretend to do what the humans want anymore, basically. And then maybe they kill everyone,” Kokotajlo said.

He continued by saying things could go south, even if the machines aren’t malicious.

“Maybe they don’t deliberately kill anyone, but they just like, use our habitat for some other type of infrastructure, like more data centers or whatever,” he said. “Maybe they keep us alive. it depends on what they want, basically.”

Kokotajlo explained his position further:

That’s why I don’t go around saying we’re like, we’re definitely all going to die. But it does seem like on the trajectory that we’re on, the AIs are eventually going to be in charge of our planet, because we’re like, trying to put them in charge.

We’re integrating them into everything, we’re making them smarter — we’re letting them make themselves smarter — we’re going to put them into the military. We’re basically on a track to put them in charge of basically everything, and then I think that they just aren’t trustworthy.

Rogan didn’t love what he was hearing.

“It seems like programming them to win was a huge mistake, instead of programming them to be beneficial to people,” Rogan said.

Kokotajlo’s remarks stand out, especially considering they come a day after a former Anthropic researcher said the technology could  “kill us all by the end of the decade.”
