Foreign Press Association Demand Access To Gaza, Say Israeli Media Ban ‘Raises Questions’

The Foreign Press Association demanded an end to Israel’s “blanket ban” on international media access to Gaza in a statement arguing that the exclusion of the press “has limited the world’s ability to witness the true cost of the war to all sides.”

Israel’s ongoing campaign in Gaza against Hamas, sparked by the deadly terror attack on October 7, has resulted in over 33,000 deaths so far, including 13,000 children, according to local Hamas-linked authorities.

Images and firsthand accounts from within Gaza paint a picture of widespread devastation—collapsed buildings, deceased victims, and survivors grappling with food shortages. Despite these conditions, Israel has restricted media access, only allowing a few to enter under strict oversight and military guard.

“The barring of independent press access to a war zone for this long is unprecedented for Israel,” the London-based Foreign Press Association said in its statement issued Monday.

It continued: “Israeli authorities have repeatedly rejected our appeals for access – in private meetings and a Supreme Court ruling – citing a variety of security-related and logistical arguments… The decision whether to be on the ground in Gaza should be up to each individual international media outlet… We call on authorities to grant the international media expanded and unfettered access to Gaza. Six months is far too long.”

Outside of official updates from Israeli military personnel, local Gazan journalists and on-the-ground humanitarian organisations have been the primary source of unfiltered updates, often disseminated through social media.
