Hannah Einbinder and Susan Sarandon Detained at Anti-Netanyahu Protest

Actors Hannah Einbinder and Susan Sarandon were detained in New York City on Thursday while protesting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of his address to the United Nations General Assembly.

Photos and videos circulating on social media showed Einbinder and Sarandon being led away from the demonstration in handcuffs before Netanyahu took the stage. It was not immediately clear whether the two actors had been arrested or only temporarily detained.

One video, shared by the New York Post, even appears to show Hacks star Einbinder pausing to pose for a photo at the request of one of the officers detaining her.

Both actors, who have been similarly outspoken in their support of Palestine and criticism of the Israeli government, donned shirts that read, “FUND PEOPLE NOT BOMBS.”

Einbinder, who is Jewish herself, used her Emmy Awards acceptance speech last year to declare, “F*ck ICE, and free Palestine!”

And Sarandon was dropped by her talent agency in 2023 after calling Israel’s actions in the region a “war crime” during a New York City protest.

Notably, Netanyahu’s speech also drew pushback inside the U.N. itself. Dozens of delegates filed out in protest as he took the podium, chanting and booing as they left the room.

“If there are any other moral cowards who haven’t left this hall, please do so now. Thank you very much,” the prime minister began.

He went on to rip New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as “antisemitic,” snapping, “Shame on you.”

A snippet of his remarks read:

Shame on you for distorting the facts. Shame on you for advocating victim and aggressor. Shame on you for spitting in the face of truth.

Mr. Mamdani, since you were elected mayor of this city, many Jews no longer feel safe in New York. They talk to me. They tell me. This isn’t the city we remember. It changed so quickly. Now it’s no wonder. You praise criminals convicted of supporting Hamas.

While the mayor spoke about potentially arresting Netanyahu upon his arrival in New York City, he’s since admitted he lacks the power to do so, instead calling on President Donald Trump to take action himself.
