Hollywood actress Emma Thompson revealed that President Donald Trump once asked her out on a date, inviting her to dinner on the very day her divorce came through.
Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, according to The Telegraph, the actress recalled filming Primary Colors in 1998 when the phone rang in her trailer.
“It was Donald Trump,” she told attendees.
She continued: “He said: ‘Hello, this is Donald Trump.’ I thought it was a joke… Then he said: ‘I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.'”
At the time, Trump had recently separated from his second wife, Marla Maples. Thompson, meanwhile, had announced her split from actor Kenneth Branagh three years earlier and was in a relationship with Greg Wise, her future husband.
“I realized that on that day, my divorce decree had come through,” she said. “I bet he’s got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcee, that’s what he was looking for.”
The actress, who has been a lifelong member of the UK’s Labour Party and a vocal supporter of leftist Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, quipped: “I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell. I could have changed the course of American history.”
She received the Leopard Club Award at Locarno for her career achievements.
