House Democrat Says ‘The Confederacy is Still Alive and Well’ Thanks to MAGA

“The Confederacy is still alive and well,” said Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) while speaking in support of Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) during a recent speech at a Massachusetts community college.

“It is bigger than Trump,” Pressley said. “Because whenever we do the work of ousting the occupant of the Oval Office, the Confederacy is still alive and well. That’s all MAGA is. White supremacy is still alive and well. Anti-Blackness will still be alive and well.”

The dig isn’t the only one Pressley’s made at Trump and his supporters this year. In May she said during an MS NOW interview, “I have to just tell the truth: There are people in this hostile anti-Black administration that would rather Black Americans pick cotton than pick the president, than pick their congressperson, than pick a senator.”

She continued, “They want the representatives to decide who their voters are, instead of the voters determining who their representatives are. This is all happening because they recognize the power of the super majority, and that is the Black voter and every marginalized voter.”

Markey is in a race against Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA). The incumbent currently holds a double-digit lead over his opponent, per recent polling.

Markey has highlighted his support for the Green New Deal, the climate legislation that was introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in February 2019. Moulton has poked holes at the bill’s viability, and told voters, “We need more science making these decisions in the United States Senate.”
