James Carville Claims Primaries Were ‘Terrible Night for Trump’ — Despite His Endorsed Candidates Winning

Veteran political strategist James Carville argued President Donald Trump had a “terrible” election night despite his endorsed candidates winning their primaries.

On his Politics War Room podcast on Wednesday, Carville admitted he was confused as to how people could spin Tuesday’s runoff primaries as a win for Trump. Sen. Darline Graham (R-SC) won her primary, and Mike Mazzei had a slim victory in Oklahoma to be the gubernatorial candidate for Republicans.

“In my opinion, this is a terrible night for Trump. He barely got above 50 in Republican primaries in South Carolina and Oklahoma… they played it as a big Trump win. I don’t understand it,” Carville said.

He argued the slim margins may show cracks in Trump’s MAGA following and he specifically called out The New York Times over their coverage of the primaries.

Carville said:

Man, when you get 50.5 in a Republican primary in South Carolina, and then the guy that got 49 and a half attacks you and the crowd breaks out wildly cheering or in Oklahoma — which I don’t know if there’s a redder state or place in the world than Oklahoma — and they barely won. And we’re told by all of the people, this was a, you know, Trump rolls again, the rolling Trump! He comes up and he lands on his feet. I don’t buy it, I’m talking one f*cking thing and Peter Baker and The New York Times are talking another thing, and I usually can understand where they’re coming from. I have no idea where this take on this election came from.

Graham, who replaced her brother Lindsey Graham in the Senate after his death this year, won her primary with 52.5% of the vote, and Mazzei won his election with just over 50%.
