JUST IN: Multiple People Injured in Virginia State University Shooting

 

Virginia State University went into lockdown Saturday after several people were hurt and one left in critical condition in a shooting involving “multiple suspects.”

The school posted updates to X early on Saturday morning, saying none of the injuries sustained appeared to be life threatening.

“Virginia State University remains on lockdown following a shooting involving multiple suspects near the Quad Annexes in the area of Boisseau Street and Third Avenue,” the university announced in their initial statement at around 6 a.m. ET. “Multiple people were shot. At this time, none of the injuries appear to be life threatening.”

Law enforcement remains present on campus investigating the shooting following the lockdown being lifted.

“A lockdown at Virginia State University has been lifted. A significant law enforcement presence remains on campus as the investigation into this morning’s shooting continues,” the school announced in a statement.

Officers responded to the scene at around 1:30 a.m. ET and found five people shot outside residence halls at the school. The five individuals shot were taken to area hospitals, with one in critical condition and the others facing non-life-threatening injuries.

Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation into the shooting. There is no word on arrests yet. The lockdown was lifted roughly two hours after it was put in place.

Fox News’ Charlie Hurt, for Fox & Friends Weekend, and others reported on the lockdown being lifted and the ongoing investigation.

School officials are asking people and students to stay clear of the campus area while law enforcement is present and investigating. VSU university police, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) officials, and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are assisting in the shooting investigation.

The shooting occurred just two days before the fall school semester was set to begin on Monday, August 17, according to the university’s calendar.
