Conservative commentator Meghan McCain praised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s (D) “absolutely brilliant” political instincts on Monday as she warned fellow Republicans that they won’t be able to “podcast bro” their way past the appeal of the democratic socialist’s message.

McCain, the daughter of the late Republican senator John McCain, said she came away impressed after reading Mamdani’s recent interview with New York Times journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro, arguing that his style of communication, not necessarily his policies, should concern Republicans ahead of the 2028 presidential race.

“I am going to say something that is going to anger my fellow republicans about Mamdani,” McCain wrote on X.

Noting Navarro’s interview with the self-described democratic socialist, she continued: “For a low information voter who has no time to pay attention to the substance of his message, what he is saying is absolutely brilliant in his attacks against the right.”

“The tone of what he is saying is brilliant. It is part folksy everyman, republicans have abandoned the working class and are a bunch of elites without being harsh or conspiratorial,” she wrote. “He has gotten very strong, very fast and is evolving in his national messaging to the rest of the country.”

McCain praised Mamdani’s style as “impactful” despite his ideology, which she said she viewed with “abject fear and repulsion.”

“If democrats are smart they will nominate someone with his tenor and tone on economics and national policy (leaving out Israel and international politics which is a whole other ball of wax),” she wrote, adding: “If democrats do this in ’28, we have a huge f*cking problem. A huge f*cking problem we will not be able to podcast bro our way out of.”

McCain’s comments followed a wide-ranging sit down for The Times’ The Interview podcast in which Mamdani discussed his political philosophy, his approach to defining the working class, and his efforts to broaden the appeal of democratic socialism.

Mamdani has emerged as one of the Democratic Party’s most closely watched progressive figures after his victory in New York City and has continued to expand his influence nationally, even catching unexpected compliments from President Donald Trump following a visit to the White House.

Since his mayoral election win, candidates backed by Mamdani won several Democratic primary contests in New York and Colorado.
