Trans Suspect Sentenced to 73 Months in Prison in Scott Bessent Assassination Plot

A transgender suspect from Massachusetts who traveled to the Capitol with the intent to kill Trump Administration officials — but who quickly gave themselves up — was sentenced to 73 months in prison after pleading guilty to plotting to assassinate Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Ryan Michael English approached a U.S. Capitol police officer in January 2025 and turned themself in, prompting cops to hold and search English.

They found a folding knife, lighter, and two Molotov cocktails, authorities said.

Fox News reported the Tuesday sentencing, and the suspect’s gender identity.

English, 24, had left their home in South Deerfield and driven to Washington D.C., with the intent to also take out Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), and to burn down the conservative Heritage Foundation, according to NBC 4 Washington.

English pleaded guilty in March to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and one count of carrying a firearm, dangerous weapon, explosive, or incendiary device on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, according to the Department of Justice.

English apparently switched targets to Bessent after learning en route that Bessent was set to be confirmed as Treasury Secretary by the U.S. Senate that day.

Police later found a note in English’s pocket which said, “This is terrible but I cant do nothing while nazis kill my sisters…Im so sorry for lying and plotting and lying.”

Bessent spoke about the incident last month during an appearance in Washington, D.C., according to Fox News.

“I was the subject of an assassination attempt,” he said, “…by an adult, left-wing activist two hours after being sworn into my job so any of you who want to report that this is a fiction and does not exist, be there for the sentencing this August.”

Bessent referenced the assassination attempt as having taken place in February 2024.
