Trump Advisor Mike Waltz Predicts ‘We’re Going to See Some Movement’ After ‘Good Talks’ With Ukrainian Leader
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz revealed Wednesday that negotiations between the U.S. and Ukraine could resume in the near future.
Those talks took a major step back last week when President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky began shouting at one another in front of the press. Zelensky was at the Oval Office to potentially sign a deal ensuring the U.S.’s continued aid in its war with Russia in exchange for access to Ukraine’s mineral resources.
In the days after the clash, Zelensky reaffirmed his desire to reach a deal and even claimed he was willing to sign it at any time. Trump, on the other hand, repeatedly accused his Ukrainian counterpart of not wanting peace and reportedly demanded a public apology from Zelensky before continuing negotiations.
On Tuesday night, Trump revealed that Zelensky had sent him a letter expressing his desire to sign the minerals agreement.
While speaking to the press Wednesday morning, Waltz suggested that things were moving in a positive direction due to conversations with Ukraine’s national security advisor.
“We have taken a step back and are pausing and reviewing all aspects of this relationship,” Waltz said when asked about the U.S. pausing intelligence sharing with Ukraine. “But I just got off the phone — before I walked out here — with my counterpart, the Ukrainian national security advisor. We are having good talks on a location for the next round of negotiations, on delegations, on substance. So, just in the last 24 hours, since the public statement from Zelensky and then the subsequent conversations which I’m going to walk inside and continue, I think we’re going to see movement in very short order.”
