Trump Reportedly Phoned Embattled House Republican: ‘Things Aren’t Looking Good’

President Donald Trump phoned embattled Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) on Monday and questioned whether the lawmaker can fend off his Democratic challenger in November, Axios reported.

Miller has been accused by his ex-wife Emily Moreno – the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) of abusing her and their daughter. Emily Moreno alleges that Miller pointed a gun at her head, threw scalding hot water at her, pushed her into a wall, and fractured their daughter’s collarbone. Miller denies the accusations. After weeks of silence, Sen. Moreno on Sunday called on Miller to drop his reelection bid.

Alex Isenstadt and Marc Caputo of Axios reported that Trump called Miller to suggest the reelection bid is in jeopardy. Citing three sources familiar with the call, the reporters said that the president told Miller that “things aren’t looking good.” Trump said multiple times that it would be tough for Miller to win reelection.

“As he has admitted privately, Max Miller needs serious psychological help,” Sen. Moreno said in a statement on Sunday. “He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter.”

While speaking with reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump called Miller “a good person.”

“It’s a very sad thing. I know Max, he’s a good person, I mean, I always thought he was a very good person,” the president said when asked about the matter. “And I’m going to let the families figure that out. His family, I know they’re working on it. It’s a very sad thing.”

In a video statement on Sunday, Miller again denied abusing his ex-wife.

“I categorically deny abusing my former wife,” he said, adding that she had “significant mental health challenges.”

Miller’s general election opponent in Ohio’s seventh congressional district is Democratic union worker Brian Poindexter.
