‘Wake Up America!’ Newsom Slams ‘Authoritarian’ Border Patrol Arrests at His Event as ‘Sick and Pathetic’
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) raged at President Donald Trump Thursday after federal agents made at least one immigration arrest outside the Los Angeles venue where he announced a Nov. 4 special election for a redistricting push.
Newsom’s announcement was “an attempt to counter mid-decade redistricting being pushed by Republicans in Texas,” according to ABC News.
During a question and answer session after the event, Newsom called ICE’s presence “pretty sick and pathetic.”
He continued:
And it just said everything you need to know about the setting that we’re under. That they chose the time, manner, and place to send their district director outside right when we’re about to have this press conference. It’s everything we know about Donald Trump’s America.
That was top down, you know that for a fact. They’ll deny it, I’m sure. Maybe they won’t deny it. It said everything you know about the authoritarian tendencies of the president of the United States. I said it a moment ago — Wake up, America. Wake up. You will not have a country if he rigs this election. You will a president who will be running for a third term. Mark my word.
Newsom’s office posted images of agents outside the event, writing “TRUMP’S PRIVATE ARMY IS ILLEGALLY ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!!!! WE WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THIS WEAK LITTLE MAN!!!”
Tricia McLaughlin, the Assistant Director of Homeland Security, posted to X that ICE’s “law enforcement operations are about enforcing the law—not about Gavin Newsom. @CBP patrols all areas of Los Angeles every day with over 40 teams on the ground to make LA safe.”
MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace read a statement on air from Gregory Bovino, the chief patrol agent of El Centro Border Patrol Sector in charge of the Los Angeles operation.
“He says this, quote, ‘Customs and Border Protection is conducting roving patrol duties in downtown Los Angeles. This is a location where we have been conducting roving duties for over two months. We did make an apprehension. Our presence is to make Los Angeles a safer community.'”
