The White House issued a statement in support of an openly gay staffer from the Interior Department while slamming the @libsoftiktok social media account, calling comments posted there “cruel and unacceptable.”

The Washington Post reported that Tyler Cherry, an activist for LGBTQ+ causes in addition to his work as a spokesperson for the Department of the Interior, was the subject of several derogatory posts and reposts by @libsoftiktok creator Chaya Raichik.

In the statement, which was first reported by the Advocate, the White House stood by Cherry:

No one should be targeted simply for being themselves. It is cruel and unacceptable. This is an administration that believes to our core in the principle that out of many we are one — and we are proud that the people who serve in it reflect those values as well. Tyler is an invaluable member of our team who continues to deliver for the Department of Interior and the American people.

Raichik, who is known for posting anti-LGBTQ+ commentary on social media and pushing inflammatory rhetoric about the community, reportedly started targeting Cherry late last week, mainly going after the staffer’s appearance and  referring to Cherry as a “queer spokesman” while mockingly asking “How many sets of pronouns do you think he has?” The attacks came seemingly out of nowhere, and several posters on Twitter/X came to Cherry’s defense.
