Alabama Star QB Jalen Milroe Reveals One of His Own Coaches Told Him He Wasn’t Good Enough to Play the Position
University of Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe on Thursday revealed he was told by one of his coaches told him he shouldn’t be playing the position.
Speaking days before the Crimson Tide’s College Football Playoff game against Michigan, Milroe claimed the comments came from Bill O’Brien — the team’s offensive coordinator at the time who’s now the coordinator for the New England Patriots.
“Shoot, my own offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien told me I shouldn’t play quarterback,” Milroe said during a press conference. “So, there’s a lot of things I can have motivation (from) and that’s something I have motivation from.”
When asked what his reaction was to O’Brien’s harsh criticism, Milroe put it bluntly.
“How would you feel if I told you, you suck?” Milroe asked a reporter, prompting them to say they wouldn’t like it. “OK then. So, that’s exactly how I felt.
“The biggest thing to me is staying true to myself and stay the same. Nothing changed about me. (The) only thing that changed about me was I had an opportunity and I seized it… I had a bigger purpose than anyone’s opinion.”
Milroe’s comments are sure to make O’Brien even more unpopular than he already was. As the head coach of and one-time general manager of the Houston Texans, O’Brien faced backlash for his high-profile breakup with star receiver DeAndre Hopkins. He allegedly traded the receiver solely because of a “power struggle” resulting from players being more receptive to Hopkins than to himself.

The sophomore quarterback fortunately didn’t let that deter him. Going into the CFP, he had more than 2,700 yards with 23 touchdowns. As a mobile QB, he has also rushed for 468 yards and 12 TDs.
“He told me a bunch of positions I could’ve switched to,” Milroe said, “but look where I’m at right now. So, who get the last laugh?”
