CNN’s 5 A.M. Post-Election Hosts Were So Desperate to Fill Airtime They Broke Down NFL Point Spreads
CNN’s early morning coverage of the Iowa caucus took an unexpected detour when the hosts began discussing point spreads for the upcoming NFL playoff games.
Around 5 a.m. Monday, after hours of covering the primary, anchor Laura Coates decided to transition to the NFL following the conclusion of the first round of the playoffs.
“Well, the Iowa caucuses were not the only major event viewers were watching last night,” Coates said after the show returned from a commercial break. “The Tampa Bay Buccaneers crushed the Philadelphia Eagles — sorry, Jake Tapper — picking up the last NFL playoff slot. Now, avid Bills fan Harry Enten has more about the playoffs.”
As Coates spoke, the broadcast cut to a shot of Enten’s feet where Buffalo Bills socks were clearly visible. Then, he used the CNN interactive board, which is normally used for tracking votes nationwide, to break down the upcoming slot of games.
Throughout the three-minute spot, Enten actually didn’t offer much in the former of gambling advice. Although he displayed how many points teams were favored by in the sportsbooks, he didn’t pick any winners for the upcoming matchups. Instead, Enten gave a brief overview of the main storylines for each team.
He did, however, express his desire to finally see the Bills win a Super Bowl.
“This is the team that Wolf [Blitzer] and I are all over: the Buffalo Bills” Enten said. “We just need one Super Bowl win. One Super Bowl win. That’s all I’m asking for. They are favored by two-and-a-half points. If they win the Super Bowl, Laura, I will treat you to any dinner you ever want. I know the entire city of Buffalo will just be ecstatic.”
