Barstool Sports founder and diehard Boston Celtics fan Dave Portnoy was distraught Monday night after star forward Jayson Tatum went down with a serious injury.

In the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals between the Celtics and the New York Knicks, Celtics forward Jaylen Brown lost the ball during an offensive possession. As Tatum lunged forward to prevent it from being stolen, he suddenly fell to the ground. The ball was eventually stolen and the Knicks scored in transition, but Tatum stayed on the ground holding his foot and called the timeout himself. After an extensive stoppage, the 27-year-old was helped into the locker room and was unable to put any weight on the injured leg.

Footage from the tunnel later showed Tatum being pushed in a wheelchair with his face buried in his hands. Because it was a non-contact injury, many suspected it was something serious enough to potentially compromise next season, as well. At the time of writing, a diagnosis had not been reported.

While the game was coming to an end, Portnoy shared his thoughts in a video posted on X/Twitter.

“So, the game’s still going,” a dejected Portnoy said. “Anybody’s game. Great game. Both teams back and forth; and then Tatum — I don’t even want to say it — Tatum having a Hall-of-Fame game, shutting everybody up — offense, defense — and looks like he maybe ruptured his Achilles. Getting wheeled off Paul Pierce-style, crying… It’s things like this that reminds you it’s bigger than sports. I don’t even know who won or lost. I stopped watching. I only cared about Tatum and his health. He’s given the city so much.

“That was a great game marred by that injury. I don’t care whether you’re a Knick fan, Celtic fan. Who won and lost should be the last thing on your mind. It should only be prayers for Jayson Tatum; and hopefully he’s all right… It looks like the worst has come true. I don’t know who won that game,” he continued.
