SNL’s Marcello Hernandez Jokes About Immigration and Tiger Woods DUI as He Kicks Off ESPYs

Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernandez kicked off Wednesday night’s ESPY Awards with jokes about Tiger Woods, Bill Belichick, and more.

The 28-year-old walked into the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater donning a boxing robe as he was joined by an entourage that included Mike Tyson and comedian Jeff Ross. Once they got to the stage and removed his robe, the monologue began.

While introducing himself to the crowd, Hernandez took a moment to acknowledge the previous year’s host.

“I also want to shout out last year’s host, Shane Gillis,” Hernandez said. “He is watching from home like a true American — on his couch drinking a beer while a Hispanic guy does his job.”

Hernandez then shouted out the immigrant athletes of the world, adding that “immigrant athletes are what makes sports great.”

“Because at the end of the day,” he continued, “sports without immigrants is just cornhole.”

Moments later, Hernandez recognized the New York Knicks ending their 53-year championship. To drive how just how long that drought was, he said:

And to put into perspective how long ago that was, in 1973, hockey players didn’t wear helmets, basketball had no three point line; and in 1973, Bill Belichick was the age his girlfriend is now.

Hernandez even threw a dig at Woods and his latest controversy. In March, Woods was involved in a crash that saw his car roll over. He was later arrested for a DUI.

“A lot of football players in the house tonight,” Hernandez said. “Where are the football players at? Let me hear you. I wanna congratulate one player. I wanna congratulate Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, who will be on the cover of the new Madden video game. Congratulations to Caleb. And Tiger Woods will be on the cover of Grand Theft Auto.”
