Katy Tur Compares Orrin Hatch’s Attacks on Kavanaugh Accuser and Anita Hill: ‘Pretty Similar’

MSNBC anchor Katy Tur aired a segment today showing GOP Senator Orrin Hatch disputing Justice Clarence Thomas’ accuser Anita Hill in 1991, and compared them to the Utah lawmaker’s comments regarding the Brett Kavanaugh misconduct allegations now.

“Go back in time for a moment and listen to the way Orrin Hatch was talking about Anita Hill while she was alleging inappropriate conduct by Clarence Thomas, and what he is now saying about Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser,” Tur said.

In both instances, Hatch sided with the Republican Supreme Court justice nominees, rather than raising additional questions or expressing concern over the claims.

In one clip from the Thomas confirmation process, Hatch suggested Hill’s testimony against the then-SCOTUS nominee raised “lots of seeds… in my mind” against her, while adding that he’s known Thomas for 11 years.

When it came to Kavanaugh, Hatch told reporters this week that he is “a straight-shooting, honest guy.”

“I think when people listen to him, they’ll know he’s alright,” he added.

Hatch went on to refer Kavanaugh’s accuser Christine Blasey Ford as “this woman” and said, “Whoever she is, she’s mixed up.”

“Sounds pretty similar, back then to today,” Tur stated in response to the clips.

Comparing the Kavanaugh allegations to the Hill-Thomas controversy has become a rallying cry for those who side with Christine Blasey Ford’s claims against Donald Trump’s SCOTUS pick, with many saying that the Senate was wrong in confirming Thomas, but should do the right thing this time.
