The camaraderie between President Donald Trump and Conor McGregor may have hit a snag after the retired MMA-fighter delivered a knockout punch to Trump’s controversial tariffs that have sent stocks spiraling.
“To be charged double the United Kingdom is an abomination!” McGregor posted in a social media rant.
He went on to suggest that Ireland detach itself from the European Union.
Trump and McGregor have had a kinship going back at least 5 years, when the ex-UFC featherweight praised Trump as a “phenomenal president” on the third anniversary of his first inauguration.
The fighter appeared at the White House on St. Patrick’s Day as a guest of Trump, who has referred to him as his “favorite Irish person.” During the visit, McGregor took questions with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and later spent time with the commander in chief.
The visit was encased by controversy as McGregor has faced multiple allegations of sexual assault, and a judgment against him in a civil court where he was found liable for assault. His presence prompted Irish Tanaiste Simon Harris to make it clear that the mixed martial artist was not there on behalf of the Emerald Isle.
“But let me be very clear,” Harris said, “Conor McGregor is not here in the United States representing Ireland or the people of Ireland.”
That Friday, McGregor revealed on social media he may have political aspirations of his own. In a post published on all of his accounts, the former champion expressed his disapproval of a European Union immigration bill and his desire to fight against it as Ireland’s next president.
