House Democrat Shreds Trump On CNN for ‘Ridiculous Carnival Barker Threats’ to Buy Greenland and Seize Panama Canal
A Democratic congressman on CNN sounded off on President-elect Donald Trump over his recent threats to buy Greenland and seize the Panama Canal.
Appearing on CNN News Central Thursday, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) — the former head of the DNC — shredded Trump for his recent talk about the canal and Greenland.
“It is utterly preposterous to suggest that we are going to send our military in to Panama to, quote, take back the Panama Canal,” Wasserman Schultz said. “we have a treaty with Panama. We have a free trade agreement with Panama. We are no more going to take back the Panama Canal than Panama is going to come in and try to take the Mississippi River from us.”
The congresswoman added, “What we need to do is make sure that we strengthen our relationships with our with our allies and and treaty partners like Panama, not make ridiculous carnival barker threats like buying Greenland — which isn’t for sale, and we’re not going to acquire — and invading Panama to take back the canal.”
Trump has been vocal in recent days about his desire to seize the canal.
“We’re being ripped off at the Panama Canal like we’re being ripped off everywhere else,” Trump said, during a speech in Phoenix on Sunday.
Trump also wrote on Truth Social over the weekend that “the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
Wasserman Schultz argued that Trump has an ulterior motive.
“What Donald Trump is really trying to do here is try to get better fees for passage for his corporate and billionaire allies,” she said. “That’s what this boils down to. And it’s preposterous.”
