49ers Suspend Announcer After Comments Going After Ray Rice’s Wife

The San Francisco 49ers suspended radio announcer Ted Robinson Wednesday night after controversial comments he made about Ray Rice‘s wife. Robinson went off on Janay Rice for being “pathetic” enough to stand by her husband after he beat her.

Janay Rice was only the Ravens star’s fiancé when the elevator incident occurred; in the intervening time they got married. And this week she went on a lengthy diatribe lashing out at the media and blaming them for ginning this up for ratings.

Robinson was utterly bewildered by this, and went on a bit of a diatribe while co-hosting on KNBR, which was chronicled by the @LOLKNBR Twitter account:

As a result of those comments on Monday, the 49ers decided to suspend Robinson for two games. Robinson put out a statement apologizing profusely for his commentary:

“I want to unconditionally apologize for my comments the other day. As a professional communicator, I am responsible for my words. My choice of words was careless and does not reflect my true feelings about domestic violence. I understand that the cycle of abuse keeps people in unhealthy relationships. No blame or responsibility for domestic violence should ever be placed on a victim.”
