After Death of Star Player, Saints Coach Sean Payton Tackles Gun Control

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 5.39.56 PMSince Will Smith of New Orleans Saints fame was shot and killed this weekend, everyone has had something to say from tweeters to sports commentators. Saints coach Sean Payton has something to say about it, too, and he’s not holding back, even a little.

He said this to USA Today:

If this opinion in Louisiana is super unpopular, so be it … Two hundred years from now, they’re going to look back and say, ‘What was that madness about?’ The idea that we need them to fend off intruders … people are more apt to draw them [in other situations]. That’s some silly stuff we’re hanging onto … I’m not an extreme liberal. I find myself leaning to the right on some issues. But on this issue, I can’t wrap my brain around it.

He went on to say, succinctly, “I hate guns.”

He invoked England as an example of a place where authority figures rarely even have guns, implying that America would do well to be more like them. Head over to the USA Today site to read more from Payton. He tied his feelings about gun control to larger issues like race, as well.

As of yet, there has been no major backlash to indicate that Payton misstepped with his “politicization” of the incident, but the interview was only printed an hour ago.
