Only weeks since Steve Bannon left the White House, the ex-Trump strategist is already making his presence felt. The ferocious Breitbart chief sat down with Charlie Rose and 60 Minutes and the show has been breathlessly teasing the Sunday night interview with a series of increasingly intriguing nuggets.
The latest clip reveals Bannon’s unmitigated disdain of the GOP establishment, which he accused of trying to “nullify the 2016 election.”
“The Republican establishment is trying to nullify the 2016 election. That’ a brutal fact we have to face,” said Bannon.
“Who?” asked Rose.
“I think Mitch McConnell and to a degree Paul Ryan,” said Bannon. “They do not want Donald Trump’s populist nationalist agenda to be implemented. It’s very obvious. It’s as obvious as night follows day.”
Yesterday, 60 Minutes also revealed footage of Bannon blasting the Catholic church’s stance on immigration, basically offering a “render unto Caesar” argument to his clerical critics — specifically New York’s Cardinal Dolan. He also accused churches of supporting illegal immigration in order to squeeze more money out of parishioners.
“They need illegal aliens. They need illegal aliens to fill the churches, it’s obvious on the face of it. That’s what the entire Catholic bishop’s condemning. They have an economic interest in unlimited immigration, unlimited illegal immigration….as much as I respect Cardinal Dolan and the bishops on doctrine, this is not doctrine at all. I totally respect the Pope and the Catholic bishops and cardinals on doctrine. This is not about doctrine. This is about the sovereignty of the nation. In that regard they’re just another guy with an opinion.”
