Tom Brokaw Swears He’s ‘Cordial’ with Brian Williams

At a University of Chicago Institute of Politics talk Monday night, former NBC newsman Tom Brokaw swore he and his suspended Nightly News replacement Brian Williams were on cordial terms, contra to reports that Brokaw loathed Williams and had called for his “head on a platter.”

Since Williams was suspended from NBC News for embellished stories of his reporting experiences, reports have emerged that Brokaw was working behind the scenes to maneuver Williams out.

Brokaw dismissed the rumors about his disdain for Williams as “too much speculation.”

“Brian and I had a cordial relationship,” Brokaw said. “You know, it was tricky because he succeeded me and I had my own strong feelings about how things should be done, but I never interfered with it. And I would make suggestions from time to time.”

He also called a Vanity Fair piece, which claimed he was stomping mad about Williams’ transgressions, “completely unsourced.”

“The reporter never ever picked up the phone and asked me whether I said something, how I felt about something,” Brokaw said. “It was outrageous.”
