Details about the plot and setting of the series are still sparse, with CBS saying only that, “The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.” Alex Kurtzman, the writer of visionary films such as Transformers and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, will helm the show as executive producer.
Unlike previous series, only the first episode will air on television. The new series will be the first exclusive series for CBS’s “All Access” online streaming service, which currently costs $5.99 per month.
The new Star Trek will be the sixth live action series set in Gene Roddenberry‘s fictional universe. The most recent series Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled ten years ago after low ratings and the poor box office performance of feature film Star Trek: Nemesis.
